Photonic sampler for 1550 nm signals
A device that extracts a sample of configurable length from a 1550-nm communication signal under the command of a pulsed light beam is presented. The device is realized by means of two CdTe:In optical switches; it has 10-ns rise and fall times and a sampling window of the duration of a microsecond. The photonic sampler is fully transparent to the optical communication signals in the third window

Very high-capacity short-reach VCSEL systems exploiting multicarrier intensity modulation and direct detection
Multicarrier intensity modulation of a bandwidth-limited long-wavelength VCSEL is exploited combined to direct detection to achieve very high capacity simple systems for short-reach applications. Tailored FDM subcarriers modulation and allocation allow to match the non-uniform frequency response of the system induced by the direct modulation and detection of the FDM signal and by the uncompensated SSMF propagation, overcoming the VCSEL bandwidth limitations. A whole transported throughput ranging from 34 Gb/s to 25 Gb/s from few hundreds meters to 20 km of SSMF propagation is experimentally demonstrated even by employing a 5-GHz band VCSEL source
A novel interferometric wavelength converter
The fiber Kerr effect employment in a wavelength conversion version, owing to low silica nonlinearity, has been prevented by the lack of an efficient interferometric architecture. A novel all-fiber wavelength converter is presented and characterized. The proposed scheme while taking advantage of the Kerr effect properties in standard communication optical fiber overcomes classical interferometric structure limitations, such as high environmental sensitivity and difficult operating management. A comparison with these architectures is discussed. Operation up to 3 Gb/s is demonstrated in the whole third communication window
