The development of a detector system for mint object spectroscopy on the Isaac Newton telescope
The work reported in this thesis describes the development of the CCD instrumentation for the Faint Object Spectrograph on the 2.5m Isaac Newton Telescope at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, more commonly known as the La Palma Observatory. The Faint Object Spectrograph is a highly efficient, fixed-format CCD spectrograph aimed at low resolution spectrophotometry (15-20 A FWHM) over a wide spectral range (400-1050 nm). Its high throughput, compared with that of more conventional spectrographs, is due to the small number of optical surfaces, and the minimum vignetting which results from, locating the CCD inside the spectrograph camera. A CCD camera system is described which was developed primarily to test and commission the Faint Object Spectrograph, but also to assess the characteristics of the GEC P8603 CCD used In the spectrograph, and optimize its performance for this application. The use of CCDs in astronomy is now commonplace but there still remains some uncertainty as to which aspects of their performance need to be most critically assessed when choosing a device for a particular application. It is argued that it is important to consider not only the obvious characteristics such as quantum efficiency, spectral coverage, readout noise and geometrical format, but also, and particularly at astronomically relevant low-light levels, the consequences of the more subtle properties such as charge transfer efficiency, threshold effects and chip defects. The CCD detector in the Faint Object Spectrograph is located inside the spectrograph camera and needs to be positioned to high accuracy within the optical path. A microprocessor system is described which enables the CCD detector to be aligned remotely from the observer's control console. Finally, the commissioning of the Faint Object Spectrograph on the Isaac Newton Telescope is described, and some of the first results obtained during commissioning are presented in order to illustrate its potential in the field of faint object spectroscopy

Newtonova filozofska teologija in filozofija narave v korespondenci z Richardom Bentleyjem
In the article, the author presents the circumstances of the correspondence between the theologian and classicist Richard Bentley and the philosopher Isaac Newton. In his eight Boyle Lectures, entitled A Confutation of Atheism, Bentley used many thoughts and observations, or their derivations, from Newton’s The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, but as he was not entirely sure whether he understood them well enough, he turned to Newton with a request for further clarification. In his answers, Newton explains some fundamental elements of his philosophical theology or metaphysics and natural philosophy, especially about the role and action of God in the creation and arrangement of the world. Both Bentley and Newton are convinced that the world was created by an “intelligent agent.” Another important aspect of the correspondence is represented by Newton’s thoughts on gravity, or, to put it another way, the question of whether gravity is inherent in matter or not, and on the possibility of bodies acting at a distance.
Sustaining Ethical Standard among Building Contractors in Nigeria
Building contractors play important role in the implementation of public building projects for the benefit and growth of the country. These contractors usually performed below expectations due to many challenges they encountered while performing their roles in the industry. The aim of this study is to identify the strategies that will sustain ethical standard among building contractors in Nigeria. This study used quantitative research method and questionnaires were used to obtain relevant information from the contractors and professionals involved directly in the implementation of public construction projects in the country. 231 respondents from the client organization, consultancy firms and contractors participated in the study. The results showed that transparency and accountability in contract administration, hiring right personnel and adhering to legislative laws that spell out punishment for any unethical practice are the three main strategies that could ensure ethical standard among the building contractors. It is recommended that the participants in the public building projects should implement these measures for better government projects development and delivery
Two Approaches to the Problem of Crisis – Ethical and Metaphysical Implications
Autor u članku postavlja i analizira dva modela pristupa krizi. In the article, the author presents and analyses two models of approaching crisis. The classical model, which sees crisis as a difficult yet passing state, can be associated with two important figures of the Western culture: Abraham from the Old Testament and Euripides’s Agamemnon. The analysis of the sacrifice of Isaac and Iphigenia shows significant similarities, and their fundamental characteristic is that Abraham’s and Agamemnon’s decisions indirectly resolve and conclude the crisis. On the other hand, the analysis of the modern understanding of crisis opens up a completely different possibility: the understanding of crisis as an expression of the ontological structure of existence. The symbolic representative of such an understanding of crisis is the figure on Edward Munch’s painting The Scream. Ultimately, the author demonstrates that the ontological understanding of crisis makes it, to a certain extent, existential

Conservation in an Islamic context a case study of Makkah
The Holy Qu’ rān contains many injunctions for Muslims to respect and conserve the natural environment but few address the built environment. Habitat at the time of the Prophet (PBOH) was in the vernacular and relatively impermanent. The first habitat was the cave, the second the tent and then simple flat roofed buildings of post and lintel construction made of mud and rubble. Later buildings were not indigenous but reflected the architectural styles and techniques of Muslim pilgrims from beyond the Arabian Peninsula. Permanent exotic buildings were later erected as reminders of holy places and events. This work advances a case to restore and preserve historic and religious sites in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Makkah is the destination for millions of Muslim pilgrims who annually pay homage to Allah during the occasions of Hajj, Ramadan and Umra. The tranquillity and peaceful ambience that one associates with the holiest of Islamic experiences have, over the years, given way to jostling crowds of people who must be expediently housed, fed, transported, and protected. Due to the lack of planning and the insensitive but profitable development of the city, Makkah is in grave danger of becoming a bustling metropolis instead of a sanctuary where pilgrims gather to perform their religious rites and reaffirm their dedication to Allah. The author calls for professional planning and international cooperation to guide future development for this expanding and sensitive area. The author's ideas are grounded in practical and aesthetic study, therefore, the political, environmental and economic issues are examined in relationship to religious, historic and artistic values. The author makes proposals for a future Makkah that would provide pilgrims with the physical comforts, security, and serene environment they deserve—without destroying the city they came to visit. The author discusses preservation and conservation in the western world and the need for their acceptance in Muslim countries, the former being an aesthetic and intellectual concept sustained by law and the latter being the prescribed free expression of the individual unhindered by material considerations. Both worlds are rapidly being overwhelmed by materialism, but body, mind and spirit combine in making us aware of our surroundings and the way in what we see around us has come into being
