    Two series of BN-phenanthrenes, including the parental compounds, have been synthesized in an efficient manner from commercially available materials. Both parental BN-phenanthrenes are strongly fluorescent in solution. Their absorption and emission spectra are greatly dependent on the BN position and orientation.     The closure of the European airspace due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull in 2010 proved a major challenge for airlines and aviation authorities on a global scale. In contrast, more seasonal adverse meteorological conditions afflict many airports in the northern eastern seaboard of the United States. Newark Liberty International Airport (KEWR) is a representative airport that endures severe weather based delays. This dissertation explores the utilisation of Bayesian Networks (BN) and heuristic analyses to investigate weather based delays at Newark Liberty International airport (KEWR). In particular, it aims to understand which weather variables (namely, precipitation, visibility and wind) have the most impact on weather based delays at KEWR in contrast to past studies that have studied more generic weather phenomena (e.g. thunderstorms) at the same airport. An analysis using temporal functionality with Bayesian Networks (BN) software and heuristic analyses was conducted. Data extracted from weather and aviation based websites was extracted using software. The quality of the information was cross referenced with official data sources and validated using BN tools. The results revealed a causal correlation chain between crosswinds above a certain threshold and high delays at KEWR at various points in the experimentation. Though other meteorological elements examined had an impact on delays, airport authorities and airlines can mitigate these factors to a certain scale using Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) approved technology and training. Consequently, the implications could be significant on existing FAA and regional policy with Ground Delay Program (GDP) and Noise Abatement Procedures (NAP). These policies can be profound and far reaching for airlines, in terms of operating procedures and fuel cost implications. These findings can further alter the balance between efficiency, public safety and airline costing affecting all major stakeholders as this dissertation will investigate

    Tribological properties of epoxy composite coatings reinforced with functionalized C-BN and H-BN nanofillers

    A series of epoxy resin (EP) composite coatings reinforced with functionalized cubic boron nitride (FC-BN) and functionalized hexagonal boron nitride (FH-BN) were fabricated successfully on 316L stainless steel by hand lay-up technique. The structure properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The morphologies were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Moreover, UMT-3 tribometer and surface profiler were used to investigate tribological behaviors of as-prepared composite coatings under dry friction and seawater conditions respectively. The results demonstrated that the presence of FC-BN or FH-BN fillers could greatly decrease the friction coefficient (COF) and wear rate of epoxy, in addition, composite coatings possess better tribological properties under seawater condition which was attributed to the lubricating effect of seawater. Moreover, FC-BN endows the composite coatings the highest wear resistance, and FH-BN / EP composite coatings exhibited the best friction reduction performance which is attributed to the self-lubricating performance of lamella structure for FH-BN sheet.     BN(O) Panel Survey W2 Technical Report

    The British National (Overseas) visa, or BN(O) visa, is a special visa route introduced by the United Kingdom government to provide a pathway to British citizenship for eligible Hong Kong residents. The visa scheme allows BN(O) visa holders to live, work, and study in the UK for up to five years. After the five-year period, visa holders can then apply for settlement, and subsequently, for British citizenship after living in the UK for an additional year. To be eligible, applicants must hold British National (Overseas) status, which was granted to those who were citizens of Hong Kong during the time when Hong Kong was a colony of the UK before the handover to China in 1997 or be the child of someone with BN(O) status born on or after 1 July 1997. Hong Kongers can also apply for the BN(O) visa as a dependant, if they are spouse, child or dependent of a BN(O) status holder. This visa route was introduced on 31 January 2021. By the end of March 2023, the BN(O) scheme had received 172,500 applications, resulting in 113,500 individuals relocating to the United Kingdom, alongside an additional 27,276 BN(O) visas granted to individuals already in the country. This significant influx of BN(O) migrants constitutes one of the largest single-country migration waves in UK history and is poised to have substantial social, economic, and potentially political impacts. A research team from University College London (UCL), King's College London (KCL), and the University of Oxford has secured funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to design and implement a three-year, three-wave panel survey of Hong Kong BN(O) migrants living in the UK. The objectives of the study are: (a) to assess the social and economic integration of BN(O) migrants in the United Kingdom, and (b) to compare the experiences and needs of BN(O) migrants with other migrant groups and UK-born individuals. In wave 1, the research team, in collaboration with the Home Office (HO), agreed on a sampling strategy involving the HO sending invitation emails to selected BN(O) visa-holders. These emails specifically targeted primary BN(O) visa holders, asking them to complete an online survey. Once their survey is completed, there was an option to invite their household members aged 16 or over to also participate in the survey. All respondents who completed the survey in wave 1 and agreed to be recontacted were invited to wave 2. Ipsos was commissioned to conduct the survey on behalf of the research team from UCL, KCL, and the University of Oxford. The fieldwork adopted a mixed-mode approach. All participants were invited to complete a Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI). However, if preferred, a Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) option was also made available. The wave 2 survey took around 25 minutes to complete online and was available in English and Chinese. Once the survey was completed, respondents received a £20 voucher. This technical report will provide an overview of the year 2 fieldwork of the Hong Kong BN(O) survey
