Macalister Blain
21Blain was in Darwin for the North Australia Commission 1930-1933. He defeated Nelson to become Federal Independent Member for the NT on 15 September 1934. He lost his seat on 10 December 1949. During the Second World War he was the only serving Member of Parliament to have become a prisoner of war after the fall of Singapore. After his return from captivity he was greeted with a standing ovation from all members of Federal Parliament. Source: NTDB: p.39-40.Blain embarked on 6 August 1916 on HMAT A 28 'Miltiades' landing at Plymouth. After further training on Salisbury Plains he embarked for France in March 1917. He was transferred to 32nd Infantry Battalion on 6 April 1917. Blain was wounded at Messines 28 January 1918, after his operation he returned to his unit and was again wounded on 3 September 1918 at St. Quentin, this time in the face with a shell containing chlorine gas and required nasal reconstruction. Blain received further architecture training before his repatriation to Australia returning home on the HT 'Pakeha' arriving 16 November 1919.
