and fully agree that tight management of the arterial partial pres sure of carbon dioxide ðPaCO2 Þ is crucial for avoiding increases in
intracerebral pressure (ICP) resulting from hypercapnic vasodila tory effects. However, in our study increases in ICP have occurred
not only in response to PaCO2 increases, but also independently,
and at times these were fairly delayed after switching to the
anaesthetic conserving device (ACD).1 Prompt increases in ICP
are usually not expected after a more gradual increase in PaCO2 ,
but rather after sudden increases of PaCO2 , which might indeed
occur directly after switching to the ACD in the absence of com pensatory mechanism

No full textChi voglia ragionare attorno al concetto di dignità si trova immediatamente a fare i
conti con una pluralità di categorizzazioni. In alcune letture la dignità è considerata un
principio, in altre un valore, in altre ancora un diritto soggettivo. Per i non giuristi tutto
ciò è poco significativo, però va subito chiarito che ogni opzione tra quelle ricordate
ha un risvolto concreto nella quotidianità. L’approccio realistico allo studio del diritto,
adottato in questa ricerca interdisciplinare, implica la necessità di farsi carico dell’impatto
sociale effettivo delle proprie scelte teoriche. La pubblicazione, attraverso la
forma del lemmario, mette in mostra le parole che danno senso e pienezza al concetto
di dignità, dimostrando che le questioni oggetto di studio non sono appannaggio dei
soli cultori del diritto. Optando per un uso della parola non specialistico, il Lessico si
fa linguaggio comune e strumento di reciproca comprensione e vicinanza, invece che
raffinato mezzo di distanziamento e controllo delle dinamiche sociali. Il Lessico ricorda
a tutti che, se il diritto è il meccanismo attraverso il quale organizziamo la società, la
dignità è il motore di tale congegno

Fire resistance evaluation through fragility curves
No full textSince the FSE has been introduced, designers have been equipped with tools that allow optimising
the performance of structures in fire. Vulnerability assessment, evaluated by stochastic approach
has become of increasing interest in the international research, also driven by insurance company
needs. The paper shows the application of probabilistic tools for assessing mechanical behaviour at
elevated temperature of common structural typologies (i.e. steel, concrete and composite beams
with or without axial restraints) at different load levels. The fluid dynamic aspects are included in
the statistical analysis, with natural fires selected in order to analyse the influence of the specific
fire load and the ventilation condition of the compartment by means of a two-zone model. Results
are summarized in fragility curves giving time collapse or maximum displacement limit state
attainment. In future, fragility curves could be built for complex structures to provide a tool for
insurance companies that allows rapid assessment of structural vulnerability to fire
Performance of steel-concrete composite bridges in fire
No full textIn assessing the damage on bridges caused by a fire, we should not only consider the possibility of
structural collapse, which often is avoided thanks to the beneficial effect of the ventilation that cools
the hot fumes propagating during fire. Indeed checks on the maximum deflection that the structure
can undergo during fire can be more significant for the functionality after fire of electrical, gas and
water systems often included in the bridge structures connecting different urban and extra urban
areas. Therefore, fluid dynamic and thermomechanical numerical analyses were performed to
simulate the behavior of typical bridges of the national highway during a fire, to identify possible
fire risk mitigation for avoiding the collapse of the structures and the damage of the facilities
