Meritare il perdono, meritare la memoria: equilibrio del discorso e verdetto della storia nella pro Marcello di Cicerone

In the pro Marcello Cicero focuses on the merits of Marcellus and Caesar. The Marcellus’ virtutes (in continuity with his familiar tradition) confirm that his return may not represent a danger; his exile indeed is a real damage to the Republic. The theme of memory then allows Cicero to meditate on Caesar's politics: only defending the integrity of the state with his clementia, the statesman will obtain glory and immortality. The issue about the responsibilities of the Pompeian pars is also examined: many people have followed Pompeius not for ideological choices but only because of an error. Then Caesar must be able to propose a ‘good’ victory, or, in other words, an ethical and political model of controlling the res publica, in order to rehabilitate each protagonist

Merces... senticosa. Stoic images in the Florida of Apuleius · In the Florida Apuleius makes use of images related to the rhetorical-philosophical stoic tradition. In particular, in Fl. 18 Apuleius describes the famous sophism of Protagoras, by using, trought an intellectual virtuosity, the metaphor of thorns, a stylistic device linked with the characterization of the Stoicism

La parola ambigua: la riflessione sull’amphibolia in Quintiliano inst. 7, 9

Amphibolia is a limit, primitive but in some ways also extreme, of the communicative experience: as Quintilian points out, every man can, even accidentally, run into it. In inst. 7, 9 we find a meticulous list of all possible occasions of ambiguity: these are presented according to a classification that aims not to neglect any aspect of the matter. And it is precisely in these cases that the orator must know how to deploy his skills, exercising every tool of knowledge and training, starting with grammatica

Agrestis cum erudito: scenografie del discorso nell’Apologia di Apuleio

In Apologia Apuleius’s speech shows a rich ‘geography’: private homes, shops, villas and inns are the ingredients of a rhetorical strategy aimed at emphasizing the cultural and ethical distance between accusation and defense. An important role is played by the topical contrast between the country and the city, used to make a strong impact on the public and on the judge and to dismantle and discredit 'a priori' the accusations. In Apologia, therefore, the places are not only the background to the trial but are also conceived as a scenery of the word and as a ‘visual’ instrument to outline the parties involved

This paper investigates the theme of erotic rivalry between father and son in Roman declamation, particularly in Ps. Quint. decl. 356, Calp. decl. 37 and, especially, in Sen. contr. ii 6. The analysis emphasizes the decisive contribution of the comedy to outlining this kind of conflict, also interpreted according to Quintilian’s theoretical reflection on this scholastica materia

Sulla potuit, ego non potero? (Cic. Att. 9, 10, 2).

Silla soon becomes a real exemplum, precious, also for its flexibility, to build a framework for the interpretation of reality. And on the other hand, the events of Silla seem not by chance also to constitute an excellent dossier on which to baste school exercises. Pompey and Caesar are still confronted with the myth of Silla, especially in the reflection of Cicero who does not fail to associate the syllable traits of Caesar to the predictable 'sillanity' of the Great

Le prove testimoniali nell’Apologia di Apuleio

In Apuleius’ Apologia the witnesses play a relevant role and indeed, in some cases, they are crucial for the defensive speech. This survey explores in detail the universe of the characters and the evidences in the Apuleian oration. Testes are often presented in spectacular form: from Crassus’ comic tones to the scenic personification of verba suppressa from Pudentilla’s letter. In Apuleius’ words, you can also see a strong continuity with the rhetorical treatises and the previous oratorical tradition: undeniably there is a proximity between some choices in the Apologia and similar solutions in Cicero, as well and it is also possible, in particular, to read some sections of the Apuleian text through the interpretative frameworks suggested by Quintilian in the section de testibus in Book v of the Institutio oratoria
