Bilateral complex microphthalmia with intraocular dermoid cyst in a neonate red deer (Cervus Elaphus)

A 3-day-old, male red deer (Cervus elaphus) with bilateral microphthalmia was found dead in the Western Alps in northern Italy. No other gross alterations were present. Ocular globes were formalin fixed and processed for histology. In both eyes, a large cyst, filled with keratin and lined by squamous epithelium admixed with sebaceous glands and hair follicles, expanded the anterior chamber. A mass composed of spindle cells and small tubules, embedded in myxoid ground substance, filled the vitreal chamber. No lens tissue was found, leading to the speculation that the dermoid cystic structures originated from abnormal differentiation of the primitive ectodermal lens vesicle. Immunohistochemistry with a panel of antibodies against cytoskeletal proteins revealed neural and mesenchymal elements within the vitreal mass. A complex bilateral ocular dysgenesis, with microphthalmia, aphakia, and dermoid metaplasia of primitive lens vesicle was diagnosed. The latter finding was unusual and was previously documented only in Texel sheep (Ovis ammon), in which it was related to specific gene mutation on chromosome 23

    Monopolistic Marginal Cost Pricing

It is usually argued that the monopolistic pricing distortion arises because "a monopoly can raise its price above marginal cost without losing all its clients" (Tirole, 1988). We discuss a simple well-behaved example in which: i) monopoly price gets as close as desired to marginal cost, and ii) nevertheless it is associated to a significant dead-weight welfare loss

92) i primi sei libri dell'opera, e l'altro (Weiss. 84) i libri finali XVI-XX. The purpose of the article is to explain how the Commentarium in Hiezechielem of Hrabanus Maurus was created through the analysis of the autograph manuscripts Wolfenbüttel, Herzog-August Bibliothek, Weiss. 92 and 84. The codices were written in Fulda by fifteen different scribes over the years recognised as those of the work's composition. The analysis of the handwritings, of the quires and of the sources of the commentarium led to the discovery of the fluid way in which the text was created. In fact, the conception of the work was not linear, but carried out through various simultaneous operations, such as the main draft, divided between groups of copyists, the emendation, the integration of new sources, the division into chapters and books. Different scribes had different roles in creating the text, some more important than others. One of them was responsible for the main conception of the commentarium and for coordinating other copyists, who had to make some decisions during the creative process as well. Hrabanus Maurus, whose handwriting can probably be identified among those in the manuscript, made few minor emendations throughout the text, and focused his interest on the more original parts of the work, the dedication letter used as prologue and the index

Modulation of the CD8+-T-cell response by CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells in patients with Hepatitis B virus infection

CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells have been shown to maintain peripheral tolerance against self and foreign antigens. In this study we analyzed the effect of circulating CD4+ CD25+ T cells on CD8+-T-cell responses of patients with chronic and resolved hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. We demonstrated that circulating CD4+ CD25+ T cells modulate the function and expansion of HBV-specific CD8+ cells ex vivo in all patients, regardless of whether they have chronic or resolved HBV infection. The possible role of CD4+ CD25+ T cells in the pathogenesis of chronic HBV infection is not supported by these data. However, these results might have implications for optimizing future immunotherapeutic approaches to HBV treatment
