Taxonomy, Biostratigraphy and Phylogeny of Eocene Acarinina
The taxonomy, phylogeny and biostratigraphic ranges of 28 Eocene species of Acarinina are discussed together with detailed synonymies. The early Eocene is characterized by the radiation of two different groups - one characterized by rounded/inflated chambers and the other by anguloconical chambers - which are derived, in turn, from two late Paleocene lineages: the soldadoensis lineage (itself derived from Acarinina mckannai) and the esnaensis-wilcoxensis lineage (itself derived from Acarinina nitida). We interpret the genus Truncorotaloides as a synonym of Acarinina. Acarinina is regarded as paraphyletic, in that it gave rise to Morozovelloides Pearson and Berggren n. gen. in the upper part of the lower Eocene (see Pearson and Berggren Chapter 10, this volume).

Since its inception in 2006, Illinois Wesleyan alumnae have been offering guidance and mentorship to current female students through the Council for IWU Women. The Council’s signature event is the annual summit, open to all IWU women—alumnae, students, faculty and staff. Held on the IWU campus March 3-4, the theme of the 2017 summit was “Raise Your Voice”. Special guests at the 2017 event included Casey Erin Clark ’04 and Julie Fogh, the founders of Vital Voice Training, an organization dedicated to creating a deeper understanding of effective communication.

Specimens agree in most aspects with the original descriptions and figures provided by Berggren (1994). In addition, a fine marginal denticulation, not mentioned for that species, was found to be present on the posterior dorsal margin of the third abdominal segment. The third maxilliped possesses a small arthrobranch, not mentioned before. In two ovigerous females checked for these branchiae, both third maxillipeds bear small, but well-developed, 3–4 lamellate arthrobranch; these were reduced to 2–3 lamellae in two males specially examined for the arthobranchs’ shape. Berggren (1994) regarded this species as belonging to the Periclimenes obscurus group and pointed out its close relationship with P. delagoae Barnard, 1958. Both these species are morphologically intermediate between the P. obscurus and P. granulimanus species groups. Color. Whitish opaque with red chromatophores, major chela with white fingers and red palm distally Berggren (1994). Host. Rhopilema nomadica Galil, Spanier & Ferguson (Scyphozoa). Distribution. Body and appendages whitish with some pale yellow tinge; orange ovary partly visible through semitransparent integument (Fig. 2 A). Distribution. Indo-West Pacific: Mozambique (Inhaca Island), Japan (Ryukyu Islands), Indonesia (Lombok) (Berggren 1992; Komai 2004; Anker et al. 2015), Papua New Guinea (Madang) (present study). Habitat. Intertidal and shallow subtidal to about 5 m; on sand under coral rubble. Remarks. Naushonia lactoalbida was originally described based on three specimens, including female holotype, male allotype and female paratype, all collected on tidal flats of Inhaca Island, Mozambique (Berggren 1992). Subsequently, Komai (2004) reported a single female specimen referable to this species, collected off the coast of Iriomote Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan, thereby considerably extending its geographic range. More recently, Anker et al. (2015) reported two specimens of N. lactoalbida from shallow sea grass flats in western Lombok, Indonesia. The ovigerous female from Madang extends the geographic range of this species further eastward, to the eastern coast of New Guinea, whereas the female from Okinawa confirms its presence in southern Japan. Among the species characterized by the non-carinate pleomeres and rounded pleura, N. lactoalbida is readily recognizable by the presence of spines on the gastric carinae of the carapace and also by the presence of several small spines on the anterolateral areas of the carapace (Berggren 1992; Komai 2004). The specimen from Okinawa differs from the previous descriptions of N. lactoalbida (cf. Berggren 1992; Komai 2004) in possessing several small spines or tubercles on the postcervical area of the carapace and having noticeably stronger teeth on the middorsal carina of the carapace (Fig. 2 B). These two differences can also be seen in one of the specimens from Lombok illustrated by Anker et al. (2015), but are much less marked in the specimen from Madang (Fig. 2 A). We tentatively consider these differences as a size-related intraspecific variation, because both the Okinawa and Lombok specimens are larger than the specimens reported by Berggren (1992) and Komai (2004), or the Madang specimen. In addition, there appear to be some differences in the shape of the rostrum, which is broader and shorter in the Madang specimen (Fig. 2 A) compared to that of the Japanese specimens (Fig. 2 B; see also Komai 2004). Neither Berggren (1992) nor Komai (2004) mentioned the presence of an arthrobranch at the base of the first maxilliped in N. lactoalbida.
