Adaptive Minimum-BER Linear Multiuser Detection for DS-CDMA Signals in Multipath Channels
The problem of constructing adaptive minimum bit error rate (MBER) linear multiuser detectors is considered for direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) signals transmitted through multipath channels. Based on the approach of kernel density estimation for approximating the bit error rate (BER) from training data, a least mean squares (LMS) style stochastic gradient adaptive algorithm is developed for training linear multiuser detectors. Computer simulation is used to study the convergence speed and steady-state BER misadjustment of this adaptive MBER linear multiuser detector, and the results show that it outperforms an existing LMS-style adaptive MBER algorithm first presented at Globecom'98 by Yeh, Lopes and Barry
Exact BER Analysis of OFDM Systems Communicating over Frequency-Selective Fading Channels Subjected to Carrier Frequency Offset
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been employed in numerous wireless standards. However, the performance of OFDM systems is degraded by both the Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO) and the Phase Estimation Error (PER). Hence new exact closed-form expressions are derived for calculating the average BER of OFDM systems in the presence of both CFO and PER in the context of frequency selective Nakagami-m fading channels. Our simulation results verify the accuracy of our exact BER analysis. By contrast, the Gaussian approximation slightly over-estimates the average BER, especially when the normalized CFO is small, the number of OFDM subcarriers is low and when the fading is less severe

Exact BER performance of asynchronous MC-DS-CDMA over Nakagami-m fading channels
In this contribution an accurate average bit error rate (BER) formula is derived for Nakagami-faded MC-DSCDMA in the context of asynchronous transmissions and random spreading sequences. Our analysis is based on the Characteristic Function (CF) and does not rely on any assumption concerning the statistical behavior of the interference. We develop a new closed-form expression for the conditional CF of the inter-carrier interference and provide a procedure for calculating the exact BER expressed in the form of a single numerical integration. The accuracy of the standard Gaussian approximation (SGA) technique is also evaluated. Link-level results confirm the accuracy of the SGA for most practical conditions
Accurate BER Analysis of Asynchronous DS-CDMA Systems in Ricean Channels
The accurate Bit Error Rate (BER) calculation of an asynchronous Ricean-faded DS-CDMA system using random spreading sequences and BPSK modulation is studied in this paper. A new closed-form expression is derived for the conditional characteristic function of the cochannel interference. Furthermore, a new BER expression involving only a single integration is derived invoking the characteristic function approach and hypergeometric functions of two variables. The accuracy of our BER expression is confirmed by our simulation results for various spreading sequence lengths and various Ricean K-factors. By contrast, the Standard Gaussian Approximation (SGA) overestimates the BER of Rayleigh fading channels, when there is no Line-of-Sight (LOS) component and it under-estimates the BER, when the LOS component becomes stronger
