Lawyers in a Blocked Society. Career Expectations and Determinants of Professional Success in the Italian Legal Labour Market
No full textThis article focuses on the changing conditions of Italian lawyers, starting from the widespread idea - here assumed as a general hypothesis - of the law profession that, in many cases, could be a way out for people with unfulfilled career expectations. In detail, a brief introduction situates the increase in the number of lawyers in the context of an economy with a low capacity to create high-education jobs, while the first section highlights the segmentation of the legal labour market. The second section then examines the relationship between initial career expectations and professional success, also paying attention to social origins as a determinant of success or failure. Furthermore, it attempts to typify and understand different choice patterns. For these purposes, the author presents selected findings of a study on lawyers based in Florence

Full text linkTwo years after Erik Olin Wright’s death, this article rereads one of his most famous works, Class Counts. This book, published in 1997, can be considered at the same time a contemporary classic of scientific Marxism and the manifest of neo-Marxist class analysis. The objectives of the article are manifold. Firstly, it contextualizes the author’s theoretical contribution in his biography, emphasizing his complicated relationship with sociology as a Marxist. Then, it focuses on the book’s specific contribution in terms of conceptual work, also looking at the theoretical implications of the empirical results. Finally, it reflects on the resilience of the heuristic capacity of Wright’s categories to understand social inequalities in contemporary society

Full text linkThe essay traces the complex path of a high-profile intellectual who has pro- foundly innovated European sociological thought. Ralf Dahrendorf’s “restlessness” is the basis of a continuous transition between different and distant countries and univer- sities and of his wise oscillation between study and politics, between scientific analysis and diagnosis of contemporaneity. A careful biographical reconstruction is followed by a critical presentation of his extraordinary contribution on four interdependent intellectual and normative themes: the rejection of utopia and homo sociologicus, the passionate acceptance and reflection on conflict, the exploration of entitlements and provisions, options and ligatures. A significant portrait emerges that underlines the tension between his social theory, or rather, a conception of sociology that constantly avoids formal abstraction because it considers the person in his full humanity and his orientations as a liberal democrat at the centre of his interest. His firm neo-liberal con- viction, however, has never stifled his social-democratic instincts of family origin. The moral action that guided Dahrendorf in his public life as a European scientist and poli- tician never made him ein großer Ordinarius but always ein großer Mensch

No full textL’articolo illustra come il concetto di investimento sociale, che aveva caratterizzato il periodo neoliberista della Banca mondiale e che è insito nel discorso del capitalismo, sia stato rielaborato verso la metà degli anni novanta in modo da essere tradotto, tra l’altro, in un pacchetto di politiche e programmi mirati a combattere la povertà e aumentare il grado di sicurezza del reddito in Europa e America latina. In particolare, vengono qui descritti gli aggiustamenti di tre dimensioni dei regimi di cittadinanza in queste due regioni. Il confronto si basa sull’assunto che, pur avendo storie politiche spesso assai diverse, le Americhe e l’Europa hanno tuttavia importanti punti in comune nelle rispettive esperienze di cittadinanza sociale. A metà anni novanta, con il moltiplicarsi dei problemi sociali nell’area Ocse e nei paesi soggetti alle direttive del Washington consensus per l’aggiustamento strutturale, l’entusiasmo per il neoliberismo è scemato e le comunità di decision maker hanno iniziato a cercare delle alternative, seppure senza ritornare alle esperienze del passato

The relaunch of regional social dialogue in Poland. How politics shaped institutions, and how institutions are likely to shape social change
Full text linkThis article, inspired by the recent restructuring of social dialogue in Poland, reflects on the role played by neo-corporatist institutions in the country, with specific reference to their capacity (or not) to influence the approach, contents and implementation of labour policies and, therefore, affect social change. For this purpose, it presents the findings of a case study focused on the sub-national level of regulation and conducted in the region of Lower Silesia, within the framework of the Airmulp project. The analysis - which relies on mixed methods, including the analysis of statistical data, the review of official documents, and interviews with key informants - reveals that regional social dialogue is not likely to produce substantial outcomes and is, most feasibly, a means for building consensus on neo-liberal policies from the bottom up

Pur avendo registrato un insieme di cambiamenti epocali destinati a segnare per circa un decennio i rapporti di forza nei luoghi di lavoro, non si stabilizzeranno mai in modo compiuto e non riuscirono a raggiungere standard europei. Gli esiti dell’autunno caldo – la stagione che più di tutte ha rafforzato la democrazia e la partecipazione nel nostro Paese – avrebbero potuto essere decisamente migliori
