    Stakeholder theory represents one of the frames characterizing the management of Corporate Social Responsibility; within this framework, this book analyses the question if the adoption of CSR leads towards competitive effects, especially in the case of small and medium - sized enterprises. On the basis of evidences collected by three research projects promoted by the European Commission, three perspectives are taken into consideration: a territorial outlook, based on the incentives to the adoption of CSR deriving from local collaborative networks; a sectorial one, for which being part of the same industry allows gaining higher level of innovation, improving market performance; an institutional frame, focused on the role played by public authorities in promoting CSR

    Sustainable tourism is a multi-stakeholder issue, whose aim is to stimulate the balanced exploitation of natural resources at the local level and to limit the social and environmental impacts. The businesses operating in the tourism sector mainly consist of SMEs. Their impact, although less significant if considered individually, are significant at the local level, particularly considering the cumulative effects produced by tourism businesses in a specific area and the role such businesses can play in influencing the behavior of tourists/guests. Focusing on the positive impacts and limiting the negative effects at social and environmental levels, represent the key to sustainable tourism for businesses

    Public policies of promotion of CSR amongst SMEs and effects on competitiveness: The case of Tuscany region

    Starting in the late 1990s, the European Commission began to promote corporate social responsibility (CSR) principles among firms and public authorities aimed at: 1) safeguarding local communities and workers; 2) stimulating the competitiveness of businesses. This paper describes a study carried out in Tuscany (Italy), aimed at investigating the opinions of local actors on the relationship between CSR and competitiveness, and the effectiveness of local policies that promote CSR. We collected the opinions of SMEs and local authorities through interviews and examined them using the qualitative method of constant comparison. Three focus groups, organized by the regional government of Tuscany, recruited other stakeholders to discuss the results of the interviews and recommended policies to the regional policy maker. The results showed that the various stakeholders essentially agreed on the utility of CSR as a means to increase SME competitiveness and the quality of local areas, however, they also reveal a lack of tools for measuring such effects

    Stakeholder engagement by an Italian water utility company: Insight from participant observation of dialogism

    This paper focuses on the level of dialogism between organizations and participants. The unit of analysis is a water utility's direct engagement with its household customers. Through participant observation and Bebbington et al.’s (2007) model, we analyzed engagement factors to detect elements occasioning a dialogic experience and its determinants. This contribution to the public utilities and social accounting literature outlines interrelated factors impacting barriers to and opportunities for creating dialogism. It enhances public utility business reputation and drives sustainability innovations. Managerially, we identified enablers and limits of an effective stakeholder engagement process
