No full textSome works in recent years were devoted to the investigation of failure mechanisms in view of the vulnerability assessment of historical masonry buildings and monuments. Shapes of collapse mechanisms were derived mainly by observation of damages of past earthquakes or, simply, by identifying weak structural solutions characterizing the typology under investigation. It seems that if sound damage scenarios have to be produced, more appropriate and quantified relations are necessary between structural behaviour and level of horizontal action, taking into account structural connections between intersecting walls. In earlier works, discrete systems of blocks interacting by non-linear springs were analysed with simplified plane models using a non linear finite element code (ANSYS). In this paper a similar procedure has been carried out through full 3D models. The results permit to quantify the overstrength, in term of collapse load, offered by connections, in function of the building height and of the spacing of longitudinal stiffening walls

No full textIl lavoro tratta del terremoto de l’Aquila del 2009, facendo riferimento a passati eventi sismici come quello di Messina del 1908 che hanno distrutto interi centri urbani. Anche se il numero di vittime non è comparabile, la vita attiva di una città si fermerà per anni o decenni a causa dei danni in attesa della ricostruzione.
Nel saggio vengono inoltre messe a confronto immagini di edifici prima e dopo l’evento sismico, per sostenere la tesi che il reale comportamento meccanico degli edifici in muratura sfugge al giudizio esperto emesso prima che l’evento accada.
In conclusione si accenna alla necessità di una ‘protezione civile della cultura’ intesa come intesa come compagine organizzata e pronta all’emergenza, allo stesso modo in cui la Protezione Civile si mantiene pronta a mandare sul campo uomini, mezzi, tende, per proteggere il valore culturale non solo dei monumenti ma di tutto il centro storico.The paper deals with the 2009 l’Aquila earthquake in comparison with historical significant earthquakes in Italy, like 1980 Messina event, taking into account the urban value, when cities alive and active are hit by a catastrophe. Apart from the number of casualties, the city life is stopped for years.
Images of damaged and undamaged structures (before the earthquake) are compared to sustain the thesis that our pre-event expert judgment is often poor and far from real mechanical behavior of masonry buildings.
Conclusion is drawn asserting the need of an organized protection of cultural heritage, need not only of the daily care profused by public institution, but of social organized net involving academic people, private associations and so on, to intervene after a seismic event to protect the cultural value not only of monuments but also of traditional historic environment
La valutazione della sicurezza (strutturale): analitica o qualitativa?
No full textIl lavoro discute, da un punto di vista metodologico, della valutazione della sicurezza strutturale relativa al patrimonio costruito storico e ai monumenti archeologici. Il restauro degli edifici storici, quasi tutti murari, sfida le attuali capacità di analisi sia per quanto riguarda la diagnosi sia per le tecniche da usare nella mitigazione della vulnerabilità. Ne consegue una limitata possibilità di applicare i concetti e i metodi di calcolo moderni, e di rispondere alle pressanti richieste normative. Nel saggio sono esaminate le alternative tra analisi quantitativa e valutazioni qualitative meccanicamente fondate e sono discussi casi applicativi.The paper deals , from a conceptual point of view, with safety evaluation of historical buildings and archeological monuments. Architectural heritage imposes a number of challenges in diagnosis and restoration that limit the application of modern mechanical analysis and modern Codes. Alternatives between quantitative analysis and intuitive mechanical understanding are discussed and a series of case-studies are presented
