Naeve P, Strohmeier B, Wolf P. APL programming without tears: it is time for a change. APL Quote Quad. 1993;24(1):185-189.To overcome the unreadability of traditional APL-code Knuth's idea of literate programming is adapted to APL. The APL2web system of structured documentation is introduced as a new way of APL-programming. An example is given to highlight the merits of this combination

Jamming/Garbling assessment and possible mitigations in the OpenSky network

    No full text
The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) technology is one of the pillars of the future surveillance system for air traffic control. However, its many fundamental vulnerabilities are well known and an active area of research. This paper examines two closely related ADS-B radio frequency channel issues, jamming and garbling. Both jamming and garbling produce the same physical effect: the reception of mixed signals, coming from different sources (usually not co-located). In this paper, we assess the impact of these reception problems and examine three separate mitigation techniques. Through the use of theoretical evaluations, simulations and real-world analysis based on data collected by the OpenSky Network, we compare their effectiveness and establish a first baseline for their use in modern low-cost, crowdsourced ADS-B networks

Parent‐conducted rapid assessment of attention types for the treatment of attention‐maintained problem behavior

    No full text
When praise is not a reinforcer for alternative behavior in the treatment of attention-maintained problem behavior, further pretreatment assessments are warranted to develop an effective treatment. The current study reports a replication of the pretreatment rapid assessment of attention types (RAAT) procedures, implemented by the parents of a 19-year-old female with attention-maintained problem behavior. After administering staff and parent-conducted RAATs, a parent-implemented treatment, (a) produced clinically significant decreases in problem behavior, and (b) confirmed that the RAAT identified an attention-type that served as a reinforcer for appropriate alternative behavior. This study extends the findings of Strohmeier et al. by reporting results of a parent-conducted RAAT and treatment evaluation. The findings highlight the practical importance of pretreatment assessment of attention-types, with emphasis on caregiver involvement, to develop effective treatments for attention-maintained problem behavior

On Jamming Attacks in Crowdsourced Air Traffic Surveillance

Wireless jamming has been a long-standing issue both in critical infrastructure research and real-world applications, with particular importance in systems that deal with long communication distances and low received signal strength. Air traffic control is one such system, experiencing a rising number of reports of outside interference with the underlying wireless technologies. In this article, we discuss the particular issue of malicious wireless jamming on crowdsourced networks of low-cost ADS-B receivers, which increasingly support modern air traffic management. Using both simulation and laboratory trials, we first show the practical impact of reduced reception and coverage of typical receivers in a crowdsourced sensor network. Following this, we investigate network-wide countermeasures based on redundant coverage, which can defend at most 50.74% of the evaluated real-world network. To improve jamming resilience in nonredundant areas, we analyze and implement a low-cost multichannel receiver and show that it can effectively recover up to 50% of the messages even under heavy jamming conditions

Integrating pyModeS and OpenSky Historical Database

    No full text
A large quantity of Mode S data is being gathered by the OpenSky receiver network every day. Information regarding common flight states, such as position, ground speed, and the vertical rate is broadcast by ADS-B and has already been decoded and made available for researchers via the OpenSky historical database. However, there is still a large amount of Mode S communication data that has not yet been fully explored. Specifically, the information contained in Enhanced Mode S Surveillance downlink messages can be utilized to better support ATM research. The challenge of decoding such information lies in the implicit inference process for Mode S Comm-B messages. This paper presents a new open library, pymodes-opensky, which connects the existing open-source pyModeS decoder to the raw Mode S messages from the OpenSky historical database through the Impala shell. It also presents a convenient workflow that can be used to obtain additional information regarding airspeeds, flight intentions, and meteorological conditions of a given flight from the OpenSky database. An analysis based on a global dataset from OpenSky is conducted, and the associated Mode S interrogation statistics in different regions are shown.Control & SimulationControl & Operation

A longitudinal study on hand use while building a tower

    No full text
The aim of the study was to describe a developmental trend of hand use for picking up and stacking blocks from the age of 18 months to 7 years. A second aim was to determine whether there is a relationship between right-hand use while building a tower and manual laterality at school age. A total of 28 children were asked to build a tower at five longitudinal assessments. The use of the right hand fluctuated considerably with age (p<.05), but no age-related increase was observed. Right-hand use was rather prominent at 18 months, decreased significantly at 26 months, increased at age 4;7, decreased again at 5;7, and finally increased again at age 7. From age 4;7 onwards, the percentage of right-hand use for stacking the blocks was significantly (p<.05) related to the laterality quotient at school age
