No full textThe article introduces a monographic issue of the Journal, edited by Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson, on "Extraction, Logistics, FInance". The article sets the frame of the issue, particularly elaborating the concept of operations of capital as an effective analytical tool for grasping the peculiarity of contemporary capitalism. The authors show that extraction, finance, and logistics provide strategic conduits of analysis to unearth key logics and trends that otherwise remain obscured in discussions of contemporary capital and capitalism. In this sense, they are more than important sectors through which to observe emerging dynamics that shape the current capitalist transition and its uneven global scope

No full textIn Europa, in Asia, nel Pacifico, nelle Americhe, i confini e le terre che li circondano sono oggi scenario di forti tensioni, di lotte violente e di tragedie umanitarie. Basta pensare alle morti, spesso senza nome, dei migranti che vanno in cerca di un futuro sfidando le acque del Mediterraneo o il deserto tra Messico e Stati Uniti. A dispetto dell'opinione diffusa, i moderni processi di globalizzazione non hanno affatto creato un mondo senza barriere, e hanno anzi generato una vera moltiplicazione di confini. Di questa proliferazione il libro traccia l'intricata mappa, indagando gli effetti che tale dinamica produce sul lavoro, sui movimenti migratori e sulla vita politica. Ne risultano nuove prospettive sulla crisi e sulla trasformazione dello stato-nazione, come pure una radicale ridefinizione dei concetti stessi di cittadinanza e sovranità.

Electron and hole self-energy contributions to the dynamic structure factor in interacting-electron systems
No full textA detailed investigation is made of the influence of particle self-energies on the dynamic response of the metallic electron gas. Two quite different approaches, the Green-Neilson-Szymański (GNS) theory and the quasiparticle-lifetime theory, are examined and contrasted. It is shown that the inclusion of off-shell effects in the quasiparticle-lifetime theory drastically alters its central conclusions. Moreover, that theory’s neglect of cancellations between self-energy terms and other classes of terms seriously violates the major sum rules. These cancellations are closely connected with conservation principles. The GNS theory, being conserving, reproduces these cancellations in detail

Multipair excitations and sum rules in interacting-electron systems
No full textMultipair excitations in the interacting-electron gas at metallic densities are quantitatively investigated at large momentum transfers with use of the microscopic Green-Neilson-Szymański (GNS) theory. The effect of single-pair and multipair excitations on the dynamic response function χ(q,ω) are contrasted, and the relative strengths of these excitations are compared. It is shown that the multiple-peak structures in the dynamic structure factor S(q,ω) as calculated in the GNS theory are associated with pure multipair effects. The essential role multipair effects play in determining the high-energy-transfer tail of S(q,ω) is stressed, and the way this affects the frequency moment sum rules is examined. Other properties of these sum rules, when they are generated within approximate but conserving theories, are discussed
