Asset securitisation as a risk management and funding tool : what does it hold in store for SMES?

    No full text
The following chapter critically surveys the attendant benefits and drawbacks of asset securitisation on both financial institutions and firms. It also elicits salient lessons to be learned about the securitisation of SME-related obligations from a cursory review of SME securitisation in Germany as a foray of asset securitisation in a bank-centred financial system paired with a strong presence of SMEs in industrial production. The cytidine deaminases AID and APOBEC-1 exhibit distinct functional properties in a novel yeast selectable system

Activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID) is indispensable for immunoglobulin maturation by somatic hypermutations and class switch recombination and is supposed to deaminate cytidines in DNA, while its homolog APOBEC-1 edits apolipoprotein (apo) B mRNA by cytidine deamination. We studied the editing activity of APOBEC-1 and AID in yeast using the selectable marker Gal4 linked to its specific inhibitor protein Gal80 via an apo B cassette (Gal4-C) or via the variable region of a mouse immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (Gal4-VH). Expression of APOBEC-1 induced C to U editing in up to 15% of the Gal4-C transcripts, while AID was inactive in this reaction even in the presence of the APOBEC-1 complementation factor. After expression of APOBEC-1 as well as AID approximately 10(-3) of yeast cells survived low stringency selection and expressed beta-galactosidase. Neither AID nor APOBEC-1 mutated the VH sequence of Gal4-VH, and consequently the yeast colonies did not escape high stringent selection. AID, however, induced frequent plasmid recombinations that were only rarely observed with APOBEC-1. In conclusion, AID cannot substitute APOBEC-1 to edit the apo B mRNA, and the expression of AID in yeast is not sufficient for the generation of point mutations in a highly transcribed Gal4-VH sequence. Cofactors for AID induced somatic hypermutations of immunoglobulin variable regions, that are present in B cells and a variety of non-B cells, appear to be missing in yeast. In contrast to APOBEC-1, AID alone does not exhibit an intrinsic specificity for its target sequences

Effects of point mutations in the cytidine deaminase domains of APOBEC3B on replication and hypermutation of hepatitis B virus in vitro

APOBEC3 cytidine deaminases hypermutate hepatitis B virus (HBV) and inhibit its replication in vitro. Whether this inhibition is due to the generation of hypermutations or to an alternative mechanism is controversial. A series of APOBEC3B (A3B) point mutants was analysed in vitro for hypermutational activity on HBV DNA and for inhibitory effects on HBV replication. Point mutations inactivating the carboxy-terminal deaminase domain abolished the hypermutational activity and reduced the inhibitory activity on HBV replication to approximately 40 %. In contrast, the point mutation H66R, inactivating the amino-terminal deaminase domain, did not affect hypermutations, but reduced the inhibition activity to 63 %, whilst the mutant C97S had no effect in either assay. Thus, only the carboxy-terminal deaminase domain of A3B catalyses cytidine deaminations leading to HBV hypermutations, but induction of hypermutations is not sufficient for full inhibition of HBV replication, for which both domains of A3B must be intact

Preparation and properties of dc-sputtered IrO2 and Ir thin films for oxygen barrier applications in advanced memory technology

    No full text
IrO2 and Ir thin films have been deposited by do sputtering in Ar/O-2- and pure Ar atmospheres, respectively. The microstructural characterization of the films was done by x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy and showed that (nano-)crystalline Ir and IrO2 films with different textures could be deposited. Stress analyses showed that the stress of the Ir films can be varied from about -3.5 GPa for a deposition temperature of 100 degreesC to nearly zero stress if deposited at 500 degreesC. However, IrO2 films generally exhibited a large compressive stress of about -1.5 GPa, which is nearly independent of substrate temperature, but changed with texture and stoichiometry of the films. Surface and roughness analyses of the cumulatively annealed samples were performed by various analysis methods, and stoichiometry was examined by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. In situ stress measurements were used to investigate the stress relaxation behavior of the films up to 900 degreesC. We demonstrate that it is generally possible to optimize reactive IrO2 sputter deposition by a detailed study of plasma and deposition conditions via recording generic curves for the sputtering system used. At optimized conditions these fine grained IrO2 films exhibit very high thermal phase stability to at least 800 degreesC for several hours and a very low roughness. The aim of these investigations is to optimize stability of IrO2 films under high temperature conditions for oxygen barrier application in dynamic random access memory and nonvolatile Fe random access memory cells. Queer Encounters in the Archive: Misplaced Love Letters and Autobiographical Homes

    No full text
The chapter contains a report of the ongoing research into queer voices and architecture at the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, which holds the National Collection of Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning. After introducing the National Collection, the authors critically examine how its internal power dynamics and mechanisms privilege certain voices while marginalizing others, followed by a brief overview of earlier ‘queering’ initiatives. In the second part of this chapter, the authors present a selection from the National Collection of three post-war architects who resisted the sexual norms and expectations of their times: Onno Greiner, Dick van Woerkom and Wim den Boon. Their incomplete histories are told through the traces of queer desires and lifestyles which haunt their archives. By discussing their autobiographical house designs, the authors aim to foreground practices of queer worldmaking in the National Collection that let us imagine queer ways of inhabiting, dwelling, and living, while reassessing the history of Dutch modern architecture and some of its tenets related to transparancy, spatial concepts and interior design.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Space & Typ

Dynamic asset (and liability) management under market and credit risk

    No full text
We introduce a modelling paradigm which integrates credit risk and market risk in describing the random dynamical behaviour of the underlying fixed income assets. We then consider an asset and liability management (ALM) problem and develop a mul- tistage stochastic programming model which focuses on optimum risk decisions. These models exploit the dynamical multiperiod structure of credit risk and provide insight into the corrective recourse decisions whereby issues such as the timing risk of default is appropriately taken into consideration. We also present a index tracking model in which risk is measured (and optimised) by the CVaR of the tracking portfolio in relation to the index. Both in- and out-of-sample (backtesting) experiments are undertaken to validate our approach. In this way we are able to demonstrate the feasibility and flexibility of the chosen framework

Deep Architecture: An Ecology of Hetero-Affection

In this chapter I explore the legacy of the American psychologist James Jerome Gibson, whose concept of affordance continues to stir controversy even among the scholars of the Ecological School of Perception. Gibson was well aware of the difficulties in challenging the orthodoxies that he himself admitted to have contributed to. His neologism, akin to Deleuzian affect, is a key element in the ecological theory of immediate perception that constitutes an alternative to the digital information-processing paradigm. It is not merely a new term. It is a new way of organising the logos which forces one to think and act politically. What it signifies is that a mode of existence never pre-exists an event and that not all potentiality is an accrued value. This is a bitter pill to swallow for all those suffering from the ‘Occidental disease of transcendence’, aka ‘interpretosis’, which manifests itself in the relentless search for a beyond that will ground and found or otherwise justify what there is. Truth and falsity cannot be considered values that exist outside of the constitutive problematic field that endows them with sense. The unproductive way to relate to bodies by way of interpretation has to give way to the hands-on intervention into the (quasi)causal fabric of reality.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Theory, Territories & Transition
