Local heat flux measurements using a micro-machined integrated probe
Thermal flows are ubiquitous in natural and industrial systems, this is why they have been studied for decades. In these kinds of flows, an important quantity is the local heat flux, but it remains experimentally nearly unstudied since it is difficult to measure it. We introduce a new local convective heat flux probe, based on a joint measurement of temperature and velocity within the flow
Some properties of set-valued stochastic integrals of multiprocesses with finite Castaing representations
The paper contains new properties of set-valued stochastic integrals defined as multifunctions with
subtrajectory integrals equal to closed decomposable hulls of functional set-valued integrals
defined in
the author paper [8]. In particular, it is proved that such defined integrals
for set-valued predictable square integrably bounded processes having finite
Castaing representations are square integrably bounded. Up to now this property has not
been proved. Unfortunately, in the general case the above boundedness problem is still
open
Assessment of joint position sense deficit, muscular impairment and postural disorder following hemi-Castaing ankle ligamentoplasty
AbstractIntroductionHemi-Castaing ligamentoplasty is a treatment for chronic ankle instability, accused of weakening a powerful stabilizing muscle: the peroneus brevis.ObjectivesTo assess proprioceptive and muscular impairment following hemi-Castaing and impact on postural control.MethodologyA retrospective series of 21 patients underwent clinical (Karlsson, AOFAS) and proprioceptive assessment with isokinetic assessment (evertors and invertors) on a Con-Trex® dynamometer and postural assessment on a Win-Posturo® force platform, at a minimum 6 months postsurgery.ResultsAt a mean 18 months’ follow-up, mean Karlsson score was 84 and AOFAS score 88. Ankle joint position sense error was less on the operated than on the healthy side. Evertor strength deficit with respect to the healthy side was 4.7% (ns) at 30°/s and 5.7% (ns) at 120°/s in concentric mode and 6.6% (ns) in excentric mode. After surgery, the evertor/invertor ratio was >1 (in favor of the evertors). Postural values were significantly higher for the operated ankle.Discussion-conclusionHemi-Castaing ligamentoplasty provided excellent clinical and functional results. It did not disturb the agonist/antagonist balance of the ankle muscles, and harvesting a half peroneus brevis did not impair evertor isokinetic force. Joint position sense was not impaired; indeed, deficits with respect to the contralateral side showed improvement.Level of evidenceRetrospective study
Thermodynamical versus log-Poisson distribution in turbulence
The thermodynamical model of intermittency in fully developed turbulence due to Castaing (B. Castaing, J. Phys. II France 6 (1996) 105) is investigated and compared with the log-Poisson model (Z-S, She, E. Leveque, Phys. Rev. Lett. 72 (1994) 336). It is shown that the thermodynamical model obeys general scaling laws and corresponds to the degenerate class of scale-invariant statistics. We also find that its structure function shapes have physical behaviors similar to the log-Poisson's one. The only difference between them lies in the convergence of the log-Poisson's structure functions and divergence of the thermodynamical one. As far as the comparison with experiments on intermittency is concerned, they are indifferent
Histoire d'un patrimoine en révolution : Claude Bonnet de Paillerets, robin de Marvejols en Lozère de 1766 à 1815
and made constant efforts to obtain social distinction, as is demonstrated by the contracts he drew up. Loyal to each new regime, a son of the Enlightenment, Bonnet had little to do with the common man's world which was so different from his ideal of the family and from his way of life as a local worthy. The author carefully follows the dialectics of individual choice and social determination within a particularly significant case study.
Castaing Thomas. Financial Market Analysis Can Go Mad (in the search for irrational behaviour during the South Sea Bubble)
An investigation into the legal and political history of South Sea Company subscription finance shows that the subscription contracts had default options built into them, as was typically the case in eighteenth-century subscription financing. Company records and contemporary pamphlet literature show that people understood the subscription finance mechanics that were stated in law. A fair presentation of South Sea share value data also supports this view. We thus conclude that the analyses published in this Review by Dale, Johnson and Tang were irretrievably flawed and present a substantially incorrect history of the markets for South Sea shares.South Sea Company, Royal African Company, Financial Revolution, Bubble Act, subscription shares, options markets.

Local velocity measurements in the shrek experiment at high reynolds number
We report preliminary results obtained using new local velocity probes in the Superfluid Helium high REynold number von Kármán flow (SHREK) experiment for different forcing conditions. The presentation will focus on the validation of the signals obtained from a hot-wire and a total head pressure tube in both normal and superfluid phases of liquid helium
