IFN alpha kinoid vaccine in conjunction with tritherapy, a weapon to combat immunopathogenesis in AIDS
Antiviral therapy, including antiprotease treatment, suppresses viral replication, but it does not restore the HIV-1 induced immunopathogenesis which includes IFN alpha overproduction and cellular immunosuppression. To combat HIV-1 induced immunopathogenesis, anti-IFN alpha kinoid immunization in combination with tritherapy may be beneficial to HIV-1 infected immunodeficient patient
Aerobic Fitness in Top-Class Soccer Referees
Castagna, C, Bizzini, M, Araújo Póvoas, SC, Schenk, K, Büsser, G, and D'Ottavio, S. Aerobic fitness in top-class soccer referees. J Strength Cond Res 33(11): 3098-3104, 2019-The aim of this study was to examine the aerobic fitness status of top-class male soccer officials using a cross-sectional design and known population group constructs. Fifty-two field referees (FRs, age 38.4 ± 3.3 years; height 181 ± 5.6 cm; body mass 76.8 ± 6.8 kg; body mass index [BMI] 23.4 ± 1.7 kg·m; body fat 20.4 ± 3.6%; and international refereeing experience 5 ± 3.5 years) and 104 assistant referees (ARs, age 37.8 ± 4.1 years; height 176.9 ± 7.5 cm; body mass 72.1 ± 7.4 kg; BMI 23 ± 1.6 kg·m; body fat 19.2 ± 3.6%; and international refereeing experience 7 ± 3.8 years) from 53 National Football Associations worldwide, and candidates of the preliminary open-list developed by the FIFA Refereeing Department for the 2014 World Cup Final Tournament, were tested for aerobic fitness in laboratory conditions with a progressive speed treadmill test to exhaustion. Large (+8.54%, d = 0.8) and small (+3.1%, d = 0.3) differences in absolute (L·min) and relative (ml·kg·min) VO2max were found between FR and AR, respectively. Trivial differences (d = 0.07) were shown in running economy (RE) (6 minutes at 8 km·h) between AR and FR. Using the scaling notation (b = 0.64), medium and significant differences were found between match officials for VO2max and RE (FR > AR; d = 0.6 and 0.67, respectively). Using receiver operating characteristic curve statistics, cutoff values of 3.93 L·min and 50.6 ml·kg·min were detected in absolute and relative VO2max for the FR and the AR (FR > AR), respectively. The FR showed superior aerobic fitness compared with AR. Training prescription should consider intensities at anaerobic threshold speed (14 km·h, 91% heart rate max) when aerobic fitness development is the aim in elite officials
Introduction: Identity, Culture and the Performance Paradigm
A short outline of the British contemporary literary and cultural scene is delineated, especially by highlighting the fruitful interconnections between literary, cultural and performance studies. The question of identity is mostly emphasised in relation to both the framework of postmodern theory (contemplating together with the death of the author that of the subject) and the latest ruminations around the possible recovery of a performative agency in a post-postmodern context. Identity as process and as performance, recuperating the individual’s bodily and affective dimension, is actually identified as a possible locus of resistance to pre-scripted discursive roles, while culture itself, likewise seen in its processual dimension, is proposed as a potential site of cultural efficacy and critique
inhibition of rabies virus infection by a soluble membrane fraction from the rat cemtral nervous system
This paper describes the inhibitory effect of a normal rat brain solubilized membrane preparation (RBSM-liposomes) on rabies virus infection. Rabies virus was incubated with RBSM-liposomes or their separated components (proteins, phospholipids, gangliosides) before infection of CER or neuroblastoma cells. In addition, both RBSM-liposomes and target cells were treated with enzymes prior to the infection step. All these experimental procedures showed that the active components were mainly lipids
Probiotics and oral health
Probiotics are living microorganisms (e.g., bacteria) that are either the same as or similar to organisms found naturally in the human body and may be beneficial to health. Current researches have shown that the balance between beneficial and pathogenic bacteria is essential in order to maintain the oral health. Therefore, oral cavity has recently been suggested as a relevant target for probiotic applications. Dental caries can be seen as a microbial imbalance where the oral microbiota shift towards community dominance which produces acidogenic and acid-tolerant gram positive bacteria. Similarly, the accumulation of bacteria within the biofilm, facilitated by poor oral hygiene, predisposes to allogenic shifts in the microbial community, leading to the onset of periodontal inflammation. Probiotic bacteria belonging to the genus of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus have been proven effective for preventing caries by reducing the number of cariogenic bacteria in saliva after a short period of consuming the probiotic. In contrast, the effect of probiotics on improving gingivitis and periodontitis has been less investigated. The currently available studies on the effect of probiotics on periodontal pathogens and clinical periodontal parameters showed differing results depending on the strains used and the endpoints analyzed. Many of the clinical studies are pilot in nature and with low quality, therefore, properly conducted clinical trials, using probiotic strains with in vitro proven periodontal probiotic effects, are needed. The putative beneficial effects of probiotics on oral malodour have also been evaluated, but further evidence is needed to fully explore the potential of probiotics for preventing malodour
Applicability of a change of direction ability field test in soccer assistant referees.
The aim of this study was to examine the applicability of a test for change of direction ability (10-8-8-10 test, involving line and sideward sprinting, 36 m) in elite-level soccer assistant referees (ARs). One hundred AR of the first-second and third Italian Championships (ARA-B and ARC, n = 50, respectively) performed the 10-8-8-10 on 3 separate occasions. Twenty AR authorities scored test relevance (1-5 scale, from trivial to very large) for logical validity using a questionnaire. Construct validity was examined comparing ARA-B and ARC for the 10-8-8-10 performance. Short-term reliability was assessed testing a random selection of ARs (n = 64) over 3 separate occasions every other day. Performance in the 10-8-8-10 test was assumed as total coverage time using telemetric photocells. Results showed that the 10-8-8-10 test was perceived as possessing from large (n = 4/20) to very-large (n = 16/20) relevance to AR physical match performance. No significant performance difference was found between competitive levels (p = 0.57). Area under the curve (= 0.49; p = 0.87) showed no significant sensitivity of 10-8-8-10 in detecting competitive-level difference. The intraclass correlation coefficient (n = 64) and typical error of measurement (test 2 vs. 3) values were 0.90 (p < 0.0001) and 0.18 seconds, respectively. This study showed that the 10-8-8-10 test possesses logical validity, good reliability, and it is independent of the competitive level. As such, this original investigation represents the first step in the identification and assessment of a valid and reliable AR change of direction test. Given the strength of our findings, governing bodies should look to integrate the 10-8-8-10 test into the fitness test protocols devised for ARs, with scores ≥ 9.67 being considered as a starting point for the empirical validation of minimum selection criteria for elite-level ARs
A prophylactic and therapeutic AIDS vaccine containing as a component the innocuous Tat toxoid
Extracellular Tat can act as a viral toxin on uninfected cells of different tissues, including the CNS and the immune system, thus in order to immunize humans against Tat we have prepared a biologically inactivated but immunogenic Tat (Tat Toxoid). Tat Toxoid is not toxic in mice even at high doses. It triggers high levels of specific Tat Abs in the mouse and rabbit. Furthermore, in humans Tat Toxoid immunization was safe and induced in seronegatives persistent high levels of Tat Abs and in immunodeficient patients a significant rise of these specific Abs. Facing acute HIV-1 infection, the presence of high level of circulating Tat Abs promoted by Tat Toxoid vaccine should prevent Tat-induced immunosuppression and allow anti-HIV-1 cellular response to develop. As a consequence, early release of beta-chemokines could enhance host resistance towards HIV-1, and, in infected people, inhibit viral replication and evolution towards AID
Evidence for an antiviral effect and interferon neutralizing capacity in human sera : variability and implications for HIV infection
The antiviral effect (AVE) and interferon neutralizing capacity (INC) of sera originating from either seronegative or HIV-infected individuals were determined. As a rule, sera from seropositive subjects exhibited higher AVE titers than sera from seronegative individuals. Similarly, the INC of sera from HIV-infected patients, was most often stronger than that of sera from seronegative individuals. Furthermore, sera from HIV-infected patients actively immunized with i-IFN alpha invariably expressed INC in response to treatment, which was not the case for sera from control unimmunized patients. All sera from HIV-infected patients were found by ELISA to contain antibodies specifically directed to IFN alph
