    Nanocapsules with stimuli-responsive moieties for controlled release employing light and enzymatic triggers

    The development of stimuli-responsive nanomaterials, that possess tailored functional properties for the release of specific compounds, is of particular interest. To this extent, controlling the release of molecules at the desired target is an important parameter to regulate chemical and/or biological reactions at a more profound level in a wide variety of applications. In the present work, we report on the development of dual-responsive thiourethane-urethane nanocapsules synthesizedviaan interfacial polymerization reaction executed at the droplet interface using the inverse miniemulsion technique. Evidenceviamorphological and controlled release investigations indicate that our nanocapsules are able to encapsulate hydrophilic compounds with high efficiency in their aqueous core and allow for its selective release upon exposure to UV light and the enzyme esterase. Moreover, we demonstrate the efficient encapsulation of the fragrance molecule geranyl acetate and the anticancer drug doxorubicin. For the latter, we demonstrate its apoptotic effect after being released in MCF 7 breast cancer cells.     Reactive oxygen species responsive dextran-thioketal conjugate nanocarriers for the delivery of hydrophilic payloads

    Dextran-thioketal conjugate (DTKC) nanocarrier responsive to endogenous as well as exogenous stimuli is developed for delivering hydrophilic payloads. First, water-soluble reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive DTKCs are synthesized and responsiveness to various ROS stimuli is studied. Next, different DTKC nanocarriers (NCs) loaded with the respective hydrophilic molecules - fluorescent dye (rhodamine B, RhoB), photosensitizer, PS (rose bengal, RB), and chemotherapeutic drug (doxorubicin hydrochloride, Dox) - are synthesized using inverse miniemulsion interfacial polymerization. All NCs exhibit nanocapsule morphology, and cargo dependent hydrodynamic diameters (166-194 nm) in water, an encapsulation efficiency between 79 and 91 %, and a drug loading content of about 11 %. RhoB-NCs and Dox-NCs exhibit time-dependent release upon exposure to different H2O2 concentrations and an enhanced release in conditioned medium collected from oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells. Further, as a proof-of-concept, light-responsive payload release from PS loaded NCs via a cascade reaction is confirmed. The in vitro studies show that RhoB-NCs and RB-NCs are biocompatible while the Dox-NCs exhibit cytotoxic effects. Such dextran-based ROS-responsive NCs sensitive to endogenous (ROS rich environment) as well as exogenous (light in combination with a PS) stimuli are highly interesting to realize combination therapies, for instance combining a chemotherapeutic drug and a photosensitizer for application in photochemotherapy.The authors thank Prof. Karen Smeets (Biodiversity and Toxicology Group, Centre for Environmental Sciences, UHasselt) for providing access to the LSM900 confocal microscope, Birte Luyck for acquiring TEM images, and Dr. Annelies Sels for supporting elemental analysis.     Synergistic oxidation of NADH on bimetallic CoPt nanoparticles decorated carbon nitride nanotubes

    We demonstrate that carbon nitride nanotube (CNNT) hybrids modified with CoPt nanoparticles (CoPt NPs) oxidize reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) to a greater extent than carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or CNNTs alone due to synergistic interactions between the CNNTs and the CoPt NPs through the improved internal network. Heterogeneous nitrogen atoms in the sp(2) carbon network provide strong binding sites for in-situ synthesis of CoPt NPs of homogeneous size. The increase in heterogeneous charge transfer on the CoPt-CNNT hybrid electrode enhanced the electrochemical oxidation of NADH at a low applied potential compared to those for pristine CNTs or CNNTs. Our results suggest that CoPt-CNNT hybrids are highly stable and ideal for use in electrochemical sensing. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.     Caesarean section delivery in Kerala, India: Evidence from a national family health survey

    Ensuring safe pregnancy and motherhood occupies a pivotal role and has been considered as one of the key issues in the framework of reproductive and child health programmes. Evidence from research studies indicate that there is a growing tendency for caesarean section deliveries especially during complications confronted at the time of pregnancy and delivery. The present study focuses on the demographic, antenatal care, spatial and socio-economic variables associated with caesarean section delivery in Kerala, India. The data from the National Family Health Survey has been utilised for this purpose. The results from logistic regression models indicate that maternal age, birth order, current age, births in health institutions and spatial differences were significantly associated with caesarean section deliveries in Kerala. The older cohorts of mothers were found at higher risk to have caesarean section when compared to their younger counterparts. When controlled for demographic variables, the odds for caesarean section was about 1.7 times more likely to occur in private health institutions. The inclusion of spatial and socio-economic variables has neither influenced the demographic and antenatal care variables nor showed any significant association with caesarean section delivery in the state. The present study calls for that a detailed investigation on behavioural aspects of both the physician and the patient with regard to type of delivery in the state. Information related to pregnancy and health related aspects needs to be monitored more accurately, both in the public and private hospitals, to understand the determinants associated with caesarean section. <br/
