    Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning Using Polynomial Transformations for Structured Prediction

    Many learning problems in computer vision can be posed as structured prediction problems, where the input and output instances are structured objects such as trees, graphs or strings rather than, single labels {+1, −1} or scalars. Kernel methods such as Structured Support Vector Machines , Twin Gaussian Processes (TGP), Structured Gaussian Processes, and vector-valued Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS), offer powerful ways to perform learning and inference over these domains. Positive definite kernel functions allow us to quantitatively capture similarity between a pair of instances over these arbitrary domains. A poor choice of the kernel function, which decides the RKHS feature space, often results in poor performance. Automatic kernel selection methods have been developed, but have focused only on kernels on the input domain (i.e.’one-way’). In this work, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm for learning kernel functions simultaneously, on both input and output domains. We introduce the idea of learning polynomial kernel transformations, and call this method Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning (STKL). STKL can learn arbitrary, but continuous kernel functions, including ’one-way’ kernel learning as a special case. We formulate this problem for learning covariances kernels of Twin Gaussian Processes. Our experimental evaluation using learned kernels on synthetic and several real-world datasets demonstrate consistent improvement in performance of TGP’s.Peer reviewe

    Video based Activity Recognition in a Trauma Center

    We present a feasibility study of automated, vision-based detection and recognition of trauma procedures in a medical emergency room. Given a ceiling-mounted camera view of the trauma room, our goal is to track and transcribe the activities performed during resuscitation of a patient, the time instances of their initiation and their temporal durations. We represent activities through complex spatiotemporal relationships between image features based on scene dynamics, patient localization, clinicians’ hand motions and medical devices. We design an activity grammar based on trauma specific domain-knowledge and model the resulting logic as a Markov Logic Network. Probabilistic inference of activity posterior is computed efficiently in the presence of observed features. To this end, we demonstrate our approach on videos of realistic trauma simulations in challenging, multi-agent. multi-task settings. This study primarily aims at exploring the overall problem of visual recognition of trauma procedures. The accuracy of the results we obtained from our recognition scheme confirms the suitability of our framework.Technical report DCS-TR-69

    A Novel Use of Higher Order Information to Detect Inliers of an Implicit Model

    The problem we address in this paper is to label datapoints when the information about them is provided primarily in terms of their subsets or groups. The knowledge we have for a group is a likelihood value for each group member to belong to same class. These likelihood values are computed using a model, either explicit or implicit, of the pattern we wish to learn. By defining a Markov Random Field (MRF) over the labels of data, we formulate the problem as an MRF inference problem. A submodular function is defined as clique potential function for this MRF. We identified a special form of this clique potential function that results in a simple and efficient inference method with linear running time with respect to the number of datapoints and subsets. The formulation allows augmentation of energy functions for data with several different size subsets. We present experimental results in applications where the proposed method produces improved performances over other methods.Technical report DCS-TR-67
