This article is interested in the relationship of contemporary Moroccan writing to the French literary tradition, concentrating in particular on the texts of Abdelkebir Khatibi and Abdellah Taïa. It focuses on how the culturally composite prose of Abdellah Taïa seeks to transform the neo-colonial assumptions about Franco-Maghrebi relations, in which any trace of a metropolitan French author is presumed to be no more than the result of an imperial education. From Flaubert to Genet, from Les Lettres portugaises to L’Immoraliste, Taïa and Khatibi often resurrect metropolitan French authors in their writing. Yet, rather than parroting French stories in a colonial act of self-effacement, Taïa’s texts rehouse French narratives on the Moroccan page to produce a shared space of intergenerational and transnational memory.

The goal of this essay is to study how the author Abdellah Taïa portrays homosexuality and class differences in the Moroccan society in his two works L’Armée du Salut (2006) and Le Jour du Roi (2010). The method used in the essay is hermeneutics, which makes it possible to use personal interpretations of the texts for the analysis. The studied texts reveal the difficulties of living in a religious society where homosexuality is condemned as well as forbidden by law and where a person’s future is dependent on his or her social status

Breaking the Silence:Between Literary Representation and LGBT Activism. Abdellah Taïa as Author and Activist

    No full text
The purpose of this article is to investigate how Moroccan author and cineaste Abdellah Taïa's work relates to growing LGBT activism in Morocco. The article begins by outlining the role of civil society in the formation of a liminal space for LGBT persons in Morocco around the time of Taïa's coming-out interview in 2006. The main focus lies on the question of silence which surrounds homosexuality in Morocco, and its connection with a larger debate about "authentic" Moroccan culture. Then, the article proceeds with an analysis of how Taïa's representational strategies in the public debate have changed in response to culturalist stereotypes about "Moroccan sexuality". It concludes with a few remarks on the role of literature within LGBT activism

Sidi Abdellah : faire une ville

The author bases his work on his own experience, since 1997 : study of the new agglomeration of Sidi Abdellah near Algiers. Through a group of decision-makers, through the creation of a management organization, the project develops coherently, in spite of numerous obstacles : no land policy, haphazard economic and political climate, negative effects of control urbanism, confrontations with the conflicting whims of the builders. The project is based on discussions on the urban types which support it, and in particular on the supremacy of space as perpetuated by the city. The expected urban revolution, compared with the industrial revolution, predicted with the communication era, is now no longer certain due to the long-term relations between man and space, which do not seem likely to change. A city project is a four dimensional study. A plan, guidelines, definition of networks, a multidisciplinary management organization acting with long term objectives could be sufficient to ensure smooth development.L’auteur part d’une expérience personnelle menée depuis 1997 : l’étude de l’agglomération nouvelle de Sidi Abdellah près d’Alger. Deluz Jean-jacques. The eastern region of Morocco is characterized by an arid to semi-arid climate. It is often confronted with heavy rainfall episodes that can generate floods that can cause adverse human and property damage. This work studies hydrological risk in the SidiBoulenouar area (Oujda province) to model floods and map risk areas. The method used is to determine the watersheds and their watercourses, then to calculate the flows with the mathematical formulas. Topographic data were extracted from a 12.5-m resolution DEM derived from the ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer). GDEM (Global DEM). The DEM was used to delimit the hydrographic network with ArcMap software. The use of HEC RAS 1D was necessary to delimit the flooding area. The results of the 1D hydraulic modeling of the centennial flood showed that four ephemeral watercourses landlock the rural area of SidiBoulenouar at the time of the floods

The use of a geographic information system to study geotechnical problems in urban areas

    No full text
Bad choice of construction site or poor number or local geotechnical study test lead to construction ruin; hence the need to have a geotechnical map for each urban area, which will constitute a reference for urban planners. Urban geotechnics is the study of urban land environments to provide a scientific and technical database for rational urban development and land use planning. The aim of this work is to make an inventory of all potential geotechnical problems in the soil bounded by the urban perimeter of Beni Ensar city. So to characterize the soil many geotechnical tests carried out in the laboratory and in situ are analysed. The results of these geotechnical tests are represented geo-spatially using GIS software. The thematic maps obtained will constitute a reference to the planners and the various actors in this field to adapt development plans and types of buildings to the properties of the supporting soil. They will also allow the civil engineering laboratory to optimize the choice of the study method and the types of tests

Writing selves as mourning and Vita Nova: Abdellah Taïa’s Un pays pour mourir

    Get PDF
Using for the most part Kleinian analysis, this article presents Abdellah Taïa’s latest novel Un pays pour mourir as a work of reparative mourning. It is divided in three parts: “Mourning the father,” “Melancholy gender and mourning,” and “Reparative work through characterization.” The approach encompasses the sociology of the author and a blend of online interviews, social media, and fictional accounts of “family”. The article finds that it is not in (psycho)analysis but within the realm of writing the self/selves, and more specifically the multiple characters invented in the novel, that Taïa the author revisits the relationship with the father, his younger self, sets up a dialogue between his more fluid gender and his more rigid identity, between his younger and his older self, and tries to reach some kind of mutual understanding, on the way to possible reintegration. Taïa accomplishes what Klein sees as a journey of reconciliation since, for the psychoanalyst, it is by reinstating inside himself the “good” parents, and by rebuilding his inner world that the patient overcomes his grief. Taïa has achieved a Vita Nova in the sense used by Roland Barthes for this expression: the discovery of a new practice of writing

Improving the mechanical characteristics of environmentally friendly concrete using fly ash and brick powder as partial sand replacements

Infrastructure and urbanization drive the demand for concrete, which puts pressure on natural resources and jeopardizes the ecosystem. Incorporating recycled materials into concrete can fulfill this demand without sacrificing quality. This study examines the mechanical properties of sustainable concrete, employing fly ash (FA) and brick powder as substitutes for sand in fine aggregates. We evaluated rebound hammer strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), workability, compressive strength, and split tensile strength using both destructive and non-destructive assessment methods, comparing them to conventional concrete. Concrete mixtures were developed by substituting 10% of natural sand with brick powder and gradually replacing the remaining sand with fly ash at 10% to 50%. The results clearly show that the best mix of 10% brick powder and 40% fly ash increases compressive strength by 64.81%, split tensile strength by 17.78%, and workability by 48%. The identical mixture yields a notable enhancement in ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) of 33.15%, achieving a velocity of 4.9 km/s, and a 32.05% increase in rebound number, resulting in a rebound index of 44.92. A regression analysis indicated a significant correlation among compressive strength, UPV, and rebound index. The combination of 10% brick powder and 40% fly ash results in enhanced mechanical performance, reduced costs, and supports sustainable construction practices

Lateral Control of an Unmaned Car Using GNSS Positionning in the Context of Connected Vehicles

AbstractThis paper addresses the problem of path following for unmaned cars using only GNSS positionning. Several papers have already addressed the lane keeping, usually restricting the focus to the computation of the optimal steering wheel angle, therefore usually offering a good solution in either straight lines or curves, but rarely both. Moreover the GNSS receiver have a sampling time higher than the required one for the proposed strategies in the literature. In this paper, a control algorithm is proposed for the steering wheel angle, with adaptation of the speed of the car, in order to provide a solution working both for straight lines and curves by using only GNSS. The presented solution has been used in real conditions to realize the demonstration “speed synchronization at intersections using intervehicular communication, x.icars” shown at the Intelligent Transportation System World Congress in Bordeaux, 201511https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBx6qks8kCI

To Be Marginalized in Morocco - the Representation of Otherness, Sexual Taboos and the Corporality in Abdellah Taia's Novels

    No full text
This master's thesis focuses on the depiction of marginalised groups in selected novels by the contemporary Moroccan writer and director Abdellah Taïa. The author, currently residing in Paris, is himself a homosexual, a Muslim, and a novelist, and in his works, he reveals a hidden and taboo image of Moroccan society. This work aims to describe and analyse the position of marginalised citizens not only in Taïa's novels but also in official government documents. Through autofiction and what is known as the aesthetics of corporeality, Taïa lays bare taboo topics and gives voice to those who, for various reasons, remain silent. The thesis seeks to answer the following questions: how does the author depict corporeality and marginalised groups of citizens? What role does corporeality occupy in Muslim society, and what taboos are associated with it? How does Taïa stylize his protagonist, what are his distinct features, and how does corporeality influence the author's writing style? Key words: Maghrebian literature, Francophone literatures, Africa, marginalisation, sexual taboo, corporealit
