Minimally Supervised Techniques for Bilingual Lexicon Extraction

    No full text
Normally, word translations are extracted from non-parallel, bilingual corpora, and initial bilingual lexicon, i.e., a list of known translations, is typically used to aid the learning process. This thesis highlights the study of a series of novel techniques that utilized scarce resources. To make the study even more challenging, only minimal use of resources was allowed and important major linguistic tools were not employed. Thus, this study introduces some novel techniques for learning a translation lexicon based on a minimally-supervised, context-based approach. The performance of each technique was measured by comparing the extracted lexicon to a reference lexicon based on the F1 score, which is a weighted average of the precision and the recall. The scores may range from 0 (worst) to 100% (best). Analysis performed on the proposed techniques showed that these techniques had recorded promising F1 scores, ranging from 57.1% to 80.9%, which indicate moderate and best performances. Overall, the findings of this study further reinforce the use of techniques in exploiting words from small corpora, suggesting that words that are contextually-relevant and occurring in a similar domain are potentially useful. This thesis also presents a technique to deploy extra (i.e., additional) data, which are harvested from the web, and a novel method for measuring similarity of features between two words of different languages without involving the use of initial bilingual lexicon

The application of critical thinking in the process of jar? wa-ta?d?l in the science of ?ad?th

    No full text
The process of critical thinking could be employed in evaluating the strength and weakness of any argument. As regards jar? wa-ta?d?l (impugnment and validation), mu?addith?n (scholars of ?ad?th) examine the reliability and trustworthiness of the transmitters to establish the acceptability of their report as being attributed to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.). Jar? wa-ta?d?l, which constitutes the criticism of the chain of transmitters and textual criticism, is regarded as the first part of ?ad?th criticism. This study analyses the elements of critical thinking in differentiating between fact and opinion, author bias rhetoric, comparing and contrasting, judgment and logical conclusion, etc., whereby these elements are crucial to determine the reliability and trustworthiness of narrators of ?ad?th. Moreover, it discusses the application of these techniques as propounded by the mu?addith?n in jar? wa-ta?d?l

The present study was designed to study the enteric parasites infection in domestic rabbits in Upper Egypt and its impact on their health. A total of 298 faecal samples were collected from different farms in Upper Egypt. Each faecal sample was screened for parasitic isolation during May 2011- October 2012. Furthermore, The Eimeria species from samples containing isolated and sporulated oocysts were morphologically identified under microscope. Additionally, the Sheather\u27s sugar flotation and Modified Zeihl Neelsen techniques were used to detect the Cryptosporidium species oocyst. According to results of the present study, the overall enteric parasite infections in rabbits was 68.12%, with 5.7% samples were found to be positive for helminths (P. ambiguus) and 49% were found to harbour various species of protozoa (Eimeria spp. and Cryptosporidium oocysts). Influences of age, sex and breed on the prevalence were recorded. Also, there was strong significant seasonal trends in the prevalence of the recovered parasites. Eight species of Eimeria were detected. Concurrent infection with two to eight Eimeria species occurred most frequently. Cryptosporidium oocyst was detected in 45 rabbits (15.1%). To the best of author\u27s knowledge, this the first report of E. piriformis and Cryptosporidium species in rabbits in Egypt. Histopathological changes were indicative of inflammatory reactions brought about by parasitic infection with Eimeria species and its consequent irritating effects on intestine. The current study showed the characteristics of the prevalence of rabbit enteric parasite infection in Egypt and provided relevant \u27baseline\u27 data for assessing the effectiveness of future control strategies against these parasites in Egypt

Development journalism and its potential contribution to the state building: the case of Somalia

Development aspect is a key target and agenda for all governments in the world. The concept embraces different facets of development including political, social, economic, infrastructure, societal, environmental, and intellectual aspects. Numerous factors contribute to the achievement of the above goals. Among these is a communication policy factoran effective and comprehensive policy can help the state accelerate development success rate. In underdeveloped countries, the mass media play an essential role in mediating the development in the country. Systematic and comprehensive communication policies are greatly needed in these countries compared to developed and developing countries. In Somalia, where there was no effective and functioning state since 1990s, the need for such policies is great. The country has been in chaotic and unstable political situation, where the media has negatively contributed to hostility and conflict. In this paper, the author discusses the concept of development journalism and its evolution and relevance particularly to the newly independent states in Asia and Africa since 1960s. Although some people may argue that, the concept is out of dat

Final Year Project II is an individual research project in connection with a special engineering problem and under the guidance of a faculty member. My Final Year Project II entitled “Melt Flow Analysis of Novel Polymer Plate Washer Using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD)”. The objective of my project is to study the melt flow process during the fabrication of polymer plate washer via the novel technique by using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD). The result of this analysis will be simulated by using FLUENT software. For this analysis project, the author wants to know if there is any possibility the polymer plate washers being produced by using other method instead of existing method. This procedure might be developed into novel commercial method to fabricate polymer plate washer which is much easier and less tedious, perhaps. This procedure is also important to be understood in terms of basic thermo mechanical processing. The molten flow of polymer plate washer during this novel technique will be analyzed. It is required that the flow behavior of the molten flow process is simulated by using any Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software or any software that suitable

Marketing communication strategy of national indie movies: a case study of Yogyakarta indie movies

    No full text
Independent films or more familiarly referred to indie films in general are films produced outside major label or company/production house (PH). Since it is not marketed through a commercial distributor line, indie film practitioners or indie filmmakers must be smart and intuitive in searching for opportunities to promote their work to a wide audience. Although there have been many indie films by Indonesian filmmakers who won numerous awards both nationally, regionally and internationally, but the funding problem often hindered their efforts to market their works, so only a handful of spectators who enjoyed the indie film. This problem was attracted the author to do research on the marketing communication strategy of national indie movies. In this article, the authors use qualitative research methods, precisely descriptive-qualitative research methods. Interview techniques, observation, library study and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) are used to collect all of research data. Data analysis using case study method. The author has conducted interviews and FGDs with two young producers who are also indie practitioners in Indonesia, namely Ifa Isfansyah (Fourcolours Films) and Ismail Basbeth (Hide Project Films). The research results show that indie filmmakers in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta, make film festivals (both national and international) as the main marketing medium for their works. In addition to using film festivals as a promotional event, indie filmmakers in Indonesia also use some media/other ways, through social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Path, and Youtube), websites that market alternative films (Layaria, ID Film Center, Kineria, VidSee, Buttonijo, nonton.com) and through press screening

Halal Malaysia Logo or Brand: The Hidden Gap

    No full text
AbstractHalal logo is the most common graphic mark use for Halal Malaysia which is a symbol to indicate the product or business is certified Halal by JAKIM. This is also an indication that the product or business is Shariah compliance. The issue of whether Halal Malaysia is logo or brand has not yet being highlighted in any previous study. However, discussion on Halal logo is more predominant where Halal logo was found to have a significant impact on consumer's decision making but such findings merely scratch the surface on the importance issues of Halal branding. Using the qualitative in-depth interview, different findings have emerged pointing to the serious issues in relation to Halal Malaysia brand equity that need to be rectified immediately. Such a problem has never been discussed before because previous findings showed that consumers possess strong awareness toward Halal logo and Halal logo itself has become the main cue that determine consumers final decision making. This has lead to an illusion of strong brand equity which concealed the hidden problem and without proper acknowledgement such problem can lead to serious complication for instance equity dilution. Indeed, Halal Malaysia from logo point of view is very important in determining consumer's awareness and recognition but the issue is only focusing on the surface. On the other hand, brand offer wider perspectives which focus more on the underlying problem or opportunity because brand has value that require constant audit and maintenance in order to ensure its survival

Authors for young adult literature often present their tales directly through the voice of the story narrators. However, Kashmira Sheth, in her Boys without Names, seeks to present her tale, specifically the issue of child labor, through the use of frame stories which are recounted by two or more narrators. Through frame stories, the authors are able to raise the readers’ awareness of child labor. This paper, through narrative theory, sets out to examine the function of frame stories in young adult literature and explores how Kashmira Sheth employs this literature to impart wisdom and the importance of being mindful of other people. The study found that frame stories have a remarkable impact on how the young readers comprehend the themes prevalent in Boys without Names.Frame stories also allow the author to convey moral messages and good virtues to the young adult audience. The use of fables also entertains and amuses the readers. Finally, by incorporating multiple narrators in this novel, the author is able not only to depict the issue of child labor from various perspectives; she also expands insights on child labor and confirms the credibility and reliability of the literary text
