    Halal cosmetics are produced from halal materials in the production facility that is not contaminated by filth materials according to Islamic shariah law. To comply with Islamic ritual regulations, cosmetic products must not only be produced using halal materials but also function effectively holistically. As the Muslim population is expanding widely, the demand for halal cosmetics also keeps growing. Exceptional change has been seen in the rise of Muslim customers and their growing purchasing power. However, some obstacles must be conquered before halal cosmetics are recognized and acknowledged, not only in Muslim countries but worldwide.     Food as medicine: How Eating Halal and Tayyib Contributes to a Balanced Lifestyle

    Food is not just to satisfy one’s desires, but it is a way of maintaining one’s health and constantly striving to worship Allah. While the concept of eating as medicine is not new, Islam had already given guidelines on eating food through the Qur’an and Sunnah from the Prophet and the companions. In Islam, the concept of eating is based on halal and toyyib, which describes eating permissible and wholesome food according to Islamic principles. However, Muslims nowadays ignore this concept, which is taking tolls on their daily lives, making them mentally and physically unhealthy. Islam emphasises food intake because of the significant impact it may have on physical and mental well-being and the soul of an individual. The types of diet in line with Islamic teaching are also described from the practice of the Prophets. The information is collected using Scopus and Google Scholar databases in addition to the primary two sources: the Qur’an and Sunnah. The reported evidence from Qur’an and Sunnah were from trusted sources, and references are provided. The contribution of this article is to set guidelines to achieve a balanced lifestyle by consuming halal and toyyib, deriving that from prophetic practices

    Nanotechnology emphasizes the use of specialized structures or materials at the nanoscale, which is defined as a size of 100 nm or less. Since the last few decades, nanotechnology and nanomaterials have developed significantly in many fields. Materials engineered to such a small scale are fascinating because of their microscopic size and increased surface-to-volume ratio. Recently, the future of nanotechnology seemed to be even brighter when green chemistry came into the picture. In green nanotechnology, nanomaterials are usually synthesized by biosynthesis, regarded as eco-friendly, efficient, and easily scaled up. Due to these factors, green nanomaterials have been considerably explored in the last several years, especially in the biomedical field. The major applications for green nanomaterials are divided into three sections: drug delivery, therapy, and diagnosis. Nanomaterials focus on bioimaging and biosensors for diagnosis, while nanomaterials are mainly used in cancer treatment and antibacterial agents for therapy. Because most biological processes are nanoscale, nanomaterials work perfectly with biomedical equipment. Until now, several green nanomaterials have been successfully utilized in therapeutics drug delivery and bioimaging. Nevertheless, while green nanomaterials are rising in popularity in the biomedical field, some issues must be addressed, especially toxicity.     Advances of bioethanol production using ionic liquids

    Ionic liquids (ILs) have been utilized significantly for biomass, particularly, lignocellulosic biomass processing which transforms eventually to bioenergy. ILs are getting more attention as they are environmental-friendly and can be designed for specific applications. To affordably manufacture high-grade biofuels and high-end biochemicals, appropriate pretreatment technologies are necessary for the breakdown of the complex biomass structure. Because of their emission profile, recyclability, low vapor pressure, and tunable features, ILs offer a lot of promise for energy-efficient biomass pretreatment where certain ILs can even be made from sustainable biomass feedstocks. However, a few issues are currently impeding the large-scale adoption of ILs, including the lack of detailed understanding of degradation and their high cost of production, which hinders process optimization. Despite these challenges, recent advances have been made to further investigate ILs as potential solvents for biomass processing and bioethanol production, and this chapter presents the latest progress in ILs-assisted bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass

    Ionic liquids: promising solvents for halal industry

    Replacement of volatile organic solvents with ionic liquids (ILs) in industrial applications is a concerned matter and a trending approach. ILs became the choice of solvents due to their merits such as low melting points (<100°C) and insignificant vapor pressure. Despite being expansively investigated, ILs have not been intensively reviewed as eco-friendly solvents for the halal industry, which is the concept of this mini review. ILs have been used as surfactants, extractants for the purification of biomolecules, stabilizers for enzymes and in biosensors applications. Regardless of the lack of data on the toxicity of food products with ILs residues, low doses of ILs in in vitro tests did not lead to cell damage. Moreover, several ILs have stabilizing effects on biomolecules such as enzymes and proteins. Thus, new applications of ILs in the halal industry are feasible within the concept of halalan tayyiban (lawful and safe, good, wholesome)

    Effects of the initial rice bran concentration on the production of lactobacillus casei as digestive bio-regulator

    Digestive bio-regulator or probiotic is defined as live bacteria with clinically documented health effects in humans and animals. Nowadays, there is increasing interest in probiotics from all over the world. However, the cost of producing probiotics products is still high. To reduce the cost, there is a need to study the usage of agro waste as an inexpensive substrate. The viability of the cell was counted in colony unit per mL (CFU/mL) and the growth was measured using dry weight measurement (g/mL). The sugar concentration was measured using glucose analyzer. At initial substrate concentration of 20% (w/v) and at incubation time of 10hr, the viability cell was 3 x 108 CFU/mL and cell dry weight was 0.0076 g/mL. From the results of this study, it is found that when the initial substrate concentration increased, the viability and growth of Lactobacillus casei increased

    A Bibliometric Analysis on Halal Cosmetics Over Twenty Years

    Purpose – Halal cosmetics area is progressively increasing these days. This bibliometric analysis is intended to systematically evaluate the research to brief researchers about the trend of halal cosmetics field. This paper also discloses the limitations of the studies in the area. Design/methodology/approach – This paper adopted bibliometric and network analysis to evaluate the research area. A total of 82 documents obtained from the Scopus database are extracted and analysed. Findings – The paper reports the type of documents available, the years published, authorship and geographical distribution of the published documents in the halal cosmetics area. From the keyword analysis, it is found that the most used words are halal cosmetics, halal, cosmetics, purchase intention, Malaysia, and Islamic marketing. Research limitations/implications – This bibliometric study is conducted using Scopus database; however, Scopus might possibly omit some publications, thus, authors might not report the missing studies. Halal cosmetics are still in the early years of publications, and only 82 published documents were analysed in the study. Originality/value – There is no study reported on the network analysis and bibliometric study techniques in the area of halal cosmetics
