NGOs' perspectives on value creation within cross-sector collaborations and their motivation behind forming them

    No full text
Current societal challenges are a complex web of obstacles intertwining many different issues which require a holistic approach; cross-sector collaborations, between the private and third sector, are said to be one of the possible remedies. The notion of business-NGO collaborations has been evolving over the past three decades and is experiencing unprecedented growth. Nevertheless, the research conducted regarding this phenomenon has been rather unilateral, focusing predominantly on the business perspective of the partnership. Thus, this thesis intends to provide the neglected perspective of the NGOs. The author has researched two Denmark-based NGOs and their perceptions and experience concerning the above-described phenomenon. Different motives for forming such partnerships were discovered between the two organisations, together with their different approaches and utilisation strategies. The resources gained and value created within these collaborations are diverse and set to be context-specific, yet seen as worth forming. The author has uncovered previous experience in the private sector, networks and networking to be the key and essential themes for attracting, forming and sustaining partnerships with private companies. The importance of networks in the business-NGO collaborations was only scarcely considered an important aspect by academic researchers before and thus it is seen as the main contribution of this thesis.Current societal challenges are a complex web of obstacles intertwining many different issues which require a holistic approach; cross-sector collaborations, between the private and third sector, are said to be one of the possible remedies. As Kathmandu city is the capital of Nepal which influence most of the big business offices, hospital and education institution to operate in Kathmandu result of which is increasing the number of vehicles facing an environmental problem. Dependency on fossil fuel vehicles has increased the cost of leaving in a developing country like Nepal due subsequently a rise in the price of petrol, diesel. Seeing this Nepalese government is producing positive policies to increase the sale of electric cars. Nepal is a country with good quality of water resources in the world which can be used to produce sustainable electric energy that helps in the E.V market that has promising development potential. Considering this, this research aims to explore “What are the different factors affecting the consumer decision-making behavior of E.V in Kathmandu Valley”? A survey in Kathmandu city carried out by an abductive approach. The pragmatism paradigm is used as a philosophy of science in the understanding of the data. We have done a survey and open-ended interview to collect the primary data and the EV website and other sources are used as a secondary data source. In understanding the problem area, we used a background study of fuel consumption in Nepal, environmental problem, production of sustainable energy, and research paper related to the survey. Besides, we use theory related to Consumer Behavior, Consumer buying behavior, and the EKB model under the Consumer decision-making process as a base for responding to the survey question. In the discussion and conclusion section after discussing the analysis output of the survey, we found that despite various factor affecting the buying process government factor and financial factor has positive effect whereas social factor provide supports in case of electric car and charging infrastructure has negative impact affecting the consumer decision-making behavior of E.V in Kathmandu. In addition, the study also found out that consumer affecting factors can be categories under five steps of the EKB model

The concept of circular economy has recently gained attention, transforming the previous production, consumption and disposal mindset toward the reduce, reuse, recycle and recover logics in general as well as in the global fashion industry. As the circular economy is mainly associated with the sustainable pillars of environment and economy, thus neglecting the social aspect, the understanding of social circular economy differs, resulting in potentially conflicting perceptions and interests. The aim of this research was to investigate how different business logics of social and for-profit enterprises balance the contradicting yet interlinked logics of social sustainability and circular economy. The thesis presents a qualitative comparative case study of the social enterprise Red Cross Genbrug and the for-profit fashion brand Nudie Jeans, analysing the socially constructed perceptions and decision-making processes regarding the social dimension within the circular value chain by applying a paradoxical lens. The analysis showed that Nudie Jeans focuses equally on all of the three sustainable logics when addressing paradoxes, while Red Cross Genbrug concentrates predominantly on the economic aspect. To address social tensions, both enterprises have allocated the majority of their social efforts towards the areas where they lack direct control over their workforce, being on the agricultural and manufacturing level within Nudie Jeans and the volunteers on the sales level in Red Cross Genbrug. The main findings are that the integration of the social aspect within circularity does not come down to the business model of the cases but to the flexibility and the equal representation of all the sustainable logics in the decision-making processes. The data also indicates that the social aspect of the circular economy is already present in both of the cases through the social sustainability efforts conducted within their circular value chain

This thesis paper explores the impact of bi-annual performance appraisal system of ACI PLC on employee motivation and its contribution to sustainable human resource management (HRM). Through the theoretical lens of Expectancy Theory (Vroom, 1964), the paper investigates the factors such as effort, performance, reward, recognition, goal clarity, fairness, compensation, transparency developmental feedback that shape employee motivation and long-term outcome in sustainable HRM practice. The paper adopts an interpretivist qualitative approach with embedded case study. The study draws on in-deep semi structured interview from the participants of different organizational hierarchy like top level, mid-level, bottom level and different departments like HR, Finance, RMIA, Supply Chain and Planning and Marketing. To interpret the data reflexive thematic analysis is used to understand the perception of the perception of the participants on bi-annual performance appraisal and motivation. The findings of the study unveil a complex relation between formal and structured appraisal process twice a year with participants lived experiences. The system provides structured way of performance monitoring and evaluation, goal setting, developmental feedback, salary increment which impacts positively to motivate some employees. For some employees it is different due to the perception on fairness, relationship with the supervisor, transparency, and recognition. The analysis of the study finds that bi-annual performance appraisal system supports motivation through well communicated KPI, frequent increment, upgradation, and feedback although it has been undermined by unstructured salary system, unimpactful increment percentage, lack of transparency and supervisor biasness. These factors weaken the links among effort, performance and reward as described in the Expectancy theory. The study concludes that bi-annual appraisal can be a potential tool for motivating employees. However, only system cannot ensure motivation and sustainable HRM outcome. Motivation is constructed relationally, and, in this context, it is shaped by fairness, impactful reward, and transparency in the system across all levels. Lastly, this paper contributes to the demonstration of using Expectancy Theory in real life world within an embedded organizational context.<br/

This thesis aims to explore and answer the question how migrant returnee are able to createbusinesses in Nepalese restaurant sector given the contextual complexities posed by largelyHindu but ethnically diverse society where peoples’ eating/drinking, food transaction andbusiness transactions are highly guided by their respective caste and ethnic belongings. Thequest of this thesis led us to delve into the long established norms, morals and rules based onthe demarcation and discriminative social and cultural behaviour related to commensality andbusiness. So, taking a constructivist ontology and interpretive epistemology, attempt has beenmade to access returnee entrepreneurs’ understandings and interpretations of society, cultureand market surrounding them through qualitative interviews and observations. Further, in depthcase studies of three entrepreneurs and their businesses allowed to explore how entrepreneurs’interpretations facilitated them to tackle challenges posed by the local institutional complexitiesto create their desired businesses. In this regard, scholars in the sub-field of returneeentrepreneurship believed migrants’ social capital in home country is lost because of their longstay in host countries. On the other hand, scholars in entrepreneurship literature generally putmore emphasis on social networks in the discovery of opportunities. While synthesizing thetwo fields to address the research question formulated, this thesis raises and aims to address thequestions related to the composition of ‘entrepreneurial alertness’ in cases of migrant returnee. Finally, this thesis will proposes the new compositions and thus discusses the components whileanswering the initial research question
