Leadership studies have been conducted for decades; however one of the leading studies about principals’ career path belongs to Peter Ribbins who carried it out in the United Kingdom in 1997. After this research a collective research project involving Singapore, Hong Kong, Cyprus and Malta was carried out under the leadership of Peter Gronn and Peter Ribbins. The purpose of this study is exploring principals’ career path as well as updating the previous research in Cyprus (Pashiardis & Ribbins, 2003) and Malta (Bezzina & Cassar, 2003) in the same field. The study has been carried out in Ireland, Cyprus and Malta with fifteen primary school principals, five principals from each country. In order to have an in depth idea about their career development, one of the qualitative methods, the interview method, was used for gathering the data. The analysis showed that the reasons for becoming a teacher are various; on the other hand the reasons for becoming a principal are similar. The majority of them wanted to become a principal to have power and because they believed they could manage the school better than the previous principals as they had the managerial skills to do the job. However there is no initial training to prepare the principals for the role. In terms of management they all stated that they are supportive, respectful, democratic, a role model, honest, collaborate and approachable and that they delegate, give responsibility and pay attention to good communication. Irish principals stated that they use these features in enabling more effecting teaching and learning. However both Cypriot and Maltese principals said bureaucracy and administrational work does not allow them to be involved in the teaching and learning process, and this is the reason that they cannot play an effective role in enabling better teaching and learning in the school. Their educational and managerial values include being democratic, collegial, a team worker, fair, transparent and respectful. However sometimes they experience difficulties in putting these values into practice. All of the principals stated that they dislike managerial tasks and bureaucracy as well as dealing with difficult people. On the other hand in spite of these difficulties, the majority of the principals stated they still enjoy principalship. In conclusion the results show that the findings of this study correspond to previous research in Cyprus and Malta. However some differences were spotted. Results also show that principals experience similar challenges to those they stated in earlier studies. These results can hopefully be used by policy makers to design new policies and improve the education of principals for the future

Cyprus is a Mediterranean island inhabited by two communities with a common culture, although they speak different languages. Since 1974, efforts to reconcile these two communities, living apart from each other in different parts of the island, have become more important in recent years and efforts have been made to ensure a lasting solution on the island. Within the scope of these efforts, non-governmental organizations in Cyprus are also carrying out various studies with the support of the European Union. This is one of those studies, which was carried out with the support of the Grow Civil Program. The purpose of this study is to examine the metaphors of the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot children created about the concept of peace. The study group consists of 23 children, aged between six and ten. Children were given a form written in Turkish and Greek languages with an expression on it as "Peace is like........ because.........." and they were asked to fill in the gaps. The obtained data were analyzed and reported by the content analysis method. Results indicate that the metaphors produced by Turkish Cypriot children are related to emotions, behaviors and individuals, while the Greek Cypriots’ are related to space, aesthetic perception, and individuals. While politicians are seeking for a permanent solution on the island, non-governmental organizations and activists have been organizing various activities to increase mutual trust between the two communities. It is thought that this study will contribute to the bi-communal studies in Cyprus

With the establishment of the republic, it was deemed necessary to start the construction of the modern child. It was aimed to raise a new generation that was loyal to the values of the republic and Atatürk's reforms; has a scientific perspective, self-development in the cultural sense, adopting the modern world, honest, hardworking, and paying attention to health. To reach these goals, it was inevitable to use literature as an effective tool. The main purpose of this study is to examine the Child Encyclopedia in the corpus of the Himaye-i Etfal Society and to make evaluations on the construction of childhood in the early republican period. As a result of the content analysis, the findings show that the encyclopedia emphasizes the power of science and the importance of technology; also focuses on science-based subjects and underlines the love of nature. The new generation, which will raise the country to the level of contemporary civilizations, has been tried to be equipped with the knowledge that can keep up with the changes and innovations in the world by adhering to national sensitivity. It is thought that the hundredyear-old Republic of Türkiye, sitting on such solid foundations today, is related to the policies followed in the early republican period

The proper and thorough functioning of the education process is based on the cooperation of the elements in education. Among the elements that should cooperate and act in harmony are teachers, school administrators and experts in educational management and supervision. Further, a curriculum is needed for the education process to proceed in a planned manner. This study aims to explore the metaphorical perceptions of teachers concerning the concepts of principal, inspector and curriculum. A qualitative research design was adopted in this study. The study group was formed through convenience and purposive sampling methods, and the study was conducted with 25 primary school teachers working in Northern Cyprus. A two-stage form was used to identify the metaphorical perceptions of the teachers. The collected data were analysed through content analysis method. They considered principals as the leader and manager of the school they worked in while stressing moderate or rigid attitudes of certain principals. Associations related to the concept of inspector were mostly about guidance%253B however, they also mentioned the negative characteristics of the inspectors they encountered regarding human relations. Finally, the concept of curriculum was perceived as a guiding adviser and as having a difficult, complex and restrictive structure. In the light of the results, it is recommended that principals be supported as regards human relations, managing relationships and communication, benefiting from guidance services in this regard. In the light of the results, it is recommended that principals and inspectors be supported as regards human relations, managing relationships and communication, benefiting from guidance services in this regard. Teachers are primary practitioners of the curriculum, and attempting to implement a challenging curriculum will reduce the efficiency and quality of education

Toward Sustainable Schools: A Mixed Methods Approach to Investigating Distributed Leadership, Organizational Happiness, and Quality of Work Life in Preschools

Previous research shows that sustainable organization conditions are associated with high levels of teacher well-being. Organizational happiness and quality of work life, two indicators of teacher well-being in an organization, impact the outcomes of teachers and organizations. Determining ways to support the organizational happiness and quality of work life variables in the organizational environment are gaining significance. Distributed leadership has attracted attention in the literature with its principles. Adopting a sequential explanatory design, qualitative data were collected after quantitative data. In the quantitative component, it was hypothesized that organizational happiness could play a mediating role in the relation between distributed leadership and quality of work life. This was tested through structural equation modeling, and the findings indicated that organizational happiness had a full mediation effect. In the qualitative component, the opinions of administrators regarding the effects of their behaviors on organizational happiness and quality of work life of teachers were investigated within the scope of distributed leadership. The results indicated that administrators’ own behaviors in the school context displayed distributed leadership characteristics
