Bio-chemical characterization and in silico computational experimental properties of Trianthema triquetra Rottler & Willd.: A desert medicinal plant for industrial products

    No full text
This research work prospects the phytochemical and biological properties of different polarity solvent (methanol, ethyl-acetate, n-hexane, and n-butanol) extracts of Trianthema triquetra Rottler & Willd. The assessment of chemical profile was done by ascertaining total bioactive contents and UHPLC-MS analysis. Similarly, biological profile was analyzed via determination of antioxidant (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, CUPRAC, phosphomolybdenum and metal chelation) and key enzyme inhibition (acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and tyrosinase) potential. Principal component analysis (PCA) was also conducted to highlight the correlation amongst bioactive contents and tested bioassays. The highest proportion of total phenolic (59.85 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoid (19.85 mg RE/g extract) contents were exhibited by methanol extract which might be correlated with its higher antioxidant capacity. Similarly, UHPLC-MS phytochemical profiling of the methanol extract unveiled the identification of 26 secondary metabolites belonging to phenolic, flavonoids, glucoside, coumarin, alkaloid, and fatty acid derivatives. The ethyl-acetate fraction exhibited the highest inhibition against BChE, α-amylase and α-glucosidase, while the n-butanol and n-hexane extracts were found to be the active against AChE and tyrosinase enzymes and the molecular docking studies explained the possible mechanism of enzyme inhibition. Results of antioxidant assays were further confirmed by PCA analysis, which shows highly effective association amid total bioactive contents and antioxidant assays

THE CONTEMPT POWER: A SWORD OR A SHIELD? – A STUDY OF THE LAW AND PRACTICE OF CONTEMPT OF COURT IN MALAYSIA.

The issue relating to contempt of court has caught the attention of people from all walks of life in Malaysia, particularly, after the controversial incidents of the removal of Tun Salleh Abbas, the then Lord President, in 1988 and the dismissal of the former Deputy Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in 1998. The judiciary is attacked and its independence is questioned. The lawyers are placed under the threat of contempt proceedings when they tried to exercise their right to freedom of speech and expression and to exercise their duty to act for their clients without fear or favour. The Bar feels that the right to freedom of speech and expression is infringed. The Bar perceives that the contempt power was being misused by the judges. The Malaysian law of contempt of court is derived from the English common law tradition and is characterised by substantial flexibility. This flexibility results in variable approaches and perceptions by judges that leave uncertainties in this area of law. Consequently, a draft of Contempt of Court Act 1999 has been proposed to the Malaysian government with the main intention of overcoming uncertainties in the law. Placing the comprehensive rules in a statute will allow easier access to and greater clarity of the law because all the rules and procedures would be found in one piece of legislation. This thesis aims to state and explain the law and the practice of contempt of court in Malaysia. This study will examine the anomalies that derived from the substantial flexibility approaches by the judges in this area of law. Thorough examination and analysis would help identifying the problems and dilemma and the way that the draft Contempt of Court Act 1999 could provide remedies for the predicaments. To illuminate the understanding of the actual practical problem, this study incorporates in-depth interviews together with questionnaire surveys. A total of 15 in-depth interviews have been conducted among the Malaysian judicial officers, advocates and prosecutors. This is further complemented by postal questionnaires sent to these selected legal actors chosen at random in accordance with their seniority, aiming at eliciting their knowledge and opinion on the subject matter at hand. The combinations of theoretical discussion on contempt of court, together with the empirical study, have proved to yield a valuable insight into the re-evaluation of the Malaysian law and practice of contempt of court. This research reveals that the uncertainties in the law of contempt of court in Malaysia were ‘caused’ by the inconsistencies in the application and approaches by the judges. The judges have unfettered discretion in determining contempt cases. The majority of the Malaysian legal actors support the idea of placing the law of contempt in a piece of legislation in order to overcome these arbitrariness and uncertainties. They hold that to have credence, the law of contempt would have to be well-defined, as in the absence of any clear guidelines it would be unmerited to imprison anyone for contempt

Aim: To assess the prevalence of high cholesterol and triglycerides in patients with diabetes, hypertension and stroke. Place and Duration: In the Medicine department of Govt General Hospital, Ghulam Muhammad Abad, Faisalabad for one-year duration from January 2019 to January 2020. Methods: A total of 150 patients were selected from the medicine department after randomized sampling technique. Results: Isolated stroke was found in 93 (62%) of 150 patients and isolated diabetes in 57 (38%). Isolated hypertension was found in 21(7%), 6(2%) patients showed combined hypertension, CVA and diabetes mellitus. Combined hypertension and stroke were observed in 18 (6%) patients. Diabetes and hypertension were combined in 20 (6.7%) patients, and diabetes and stroke in 7 (2.3%) patients. Key words: diabetes, hypertension, stroke

Advanced imaging for quantification of abnormalities in the salivary glands of patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome

    No full text
Objectives: To assess non-invasive imaging for detection and quantification of gland structure, inflammation and function in patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) using PET-CT with 11C-Methionine (11C-MET; radiolabelled amino acid), and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG; glucose uptake marker), to assess protein synthesis and inflammation, respectively; multiparametric MRI evaluated salivary gland structural and physiological changes. / Methods: In this imaging/clinical/histology comparative study (GSK study 203818; NCT02899377) patients with pSS and age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers underwent MRI of the salivary glands and 11C-MET PET-CT. Patients also underwent 18F-FDG PET-CT and labial salivary gland biopsies. Clinical and biomarker assessments were performed. Primary endpoints were semi-quantitative parameters of 11C-MET and 18F-FDG uptake in submandibular and parotid salivary glands and quantitative MRI measures of structure and inflammation. Clinical and minor salivary gland histological parameter correlations were explored. / Results: Twelve patients with pSS and 13 healthy volunteers were included. Lower 11C-MET uptake in parotid, submandibular and lacrimal glands, lower submandibular gland volume, higher MRI fat fraction, and lower pure diffusion in parotid and submandibular glands were observed in patients vs healthy volunteer, consistent with reduced synthetic function. Disease duration correlated positively with fat fraction and negatively with 11C-MET and 18F-FDG uptake, consistent with impaired function, inflammation and fatty replacement over time. Lacrimal gland 11C-MET uptake positively correlated with tear flow in patients, and parotid gland 18F-FDG uptake positively correlated with salivary gland CD20+ B-cell infiltration. / Conclusion: Molecular imaging and MRI may be useful tools to non-invasively assess loss of glandular function, increased glandular inflammation and fat accumulation in pSS
