JALILA BINTI ABU/// MOHAMED YOUSIF IBRAHIM MOHAMED,SALEHA BINTI ABDUL AZIZ,ZUNITA BINTI ZAKARIA/// Abdul Rashid,Elmutaz Atta Awad In developing countries, Escherichia coli and Campylobacter jejuni were found to be the prominent bacterial causes of gastroenteritis in human gastroenteritis, and they also showed an increased trend towards antibiotic resistance. Thus, the study aimed to determine the occurrence of E. coli and C. jejuni in wild birds, chickens, human and environment in villages in Perak and to determine the antibiotic resistance amongst E. coli and C. jejuni isolates. Three Orang Asli villages in Perak were chosen. Wild birds were trapped from nearby areas of the villages. We collected 52 human stool samples, 40 cloacal swabs from wild birds and 42 from chickens. For the environment, samples were collected from water (40 samples), flies (40 samples) and soil (40 samples). Two (5%) flies and 16 (38.1%) chickens were found positive for C. jejuni. Also, a total of 50 (96.2%) humans, 40 (100%) birds, 40 (95.2%) chickens were positive for E. coli and 111 (92.5%) of the 120 environmental samples tested positive for E. coli. The disk diffusion method was employed to determine the susceptibility of C. jejuni and E. coli isolates against ten antibiotics. All of the E. coli (100%) and C. jejuni (66%) isolates were found resistance towards at least one antibiotic. Hundred percent (100%) of the E. coli isolates obtained from wild birds were found to show multidrug resistance (MDR). Campylobacter jejuni isolates from flies and chickens showed high resistance towards nalidixic acid

Thesis: S.M. in Engineering and Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design and Management Program, 2018.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 71-73).Increases in the volume of data and the availability of compute power have driven a number of advancements in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and AI technologies and applications are getting a flood of publicity in the media. While four in five executives agree that AI is a strategic opportunity for their organization, only about one in five has incorporated AI in some offerings or processes, and only one in 20 has extensively incorporated AI in their offerings or processes. There is a gap between expectation and action, and we are still in the early days of enterprise AI adoption. This thesis explores the path enterprises need to take to close this gap and to build an enterprise AI capability, thereby realizing the full value of this disruptive technology. Through a literature review it proposes a seven component holistic framework that can guide enterprises through this journey. The framework is more 'wide than deep', and it is supplemented with five case studies that take deep dives into the real life journeys of enterprises from different industries. These stories provide a vivid illustration of best practices and challenges. The case studies cover Danske Bank fighting financial fraud with deep learning, Deutsche Telekom improving customer service with an intelligent digital assistant, General Electric deploying machine learning applications for monitoring workflows in the Industrial Internet of Things, General Mills automating insights for marketers, and Kaiser Permanente using state of the art Natural Language Processing techniques on unstructured triage notes to improve patient flow forecasting. Learnings from the case studies are synthesized into recommendations to aid practitioners on the road to enterprise Artificial Intelligence.by Saleha Saulat Siddique.S.M. in Engineering and Managemen

Why hedge? Extent, nature, and determinants of derivative usage in U.S. municipalities

    No full text
Using a hand-collected dataset of over 300 observations of large U.S. cities and counties, this paper investigates the extent, nature and determinants of derivatives usage in the municipal sector.Over half of our sample entities engage in derivative transactions and a vast majority of these transactions are intended to manage interest rate risk. Swaps, by far, are the most popular derivative instrument. In terms of the determinants of derivative usage,we find that the propensity to use derivatives as well as the extent of derivative usage is higher for municipalities that are larger and more financially constrained. We do not find growth to be related to municipal derivative usage. Contrary to suggestions made in the popular press, we fail to find managerial opportunism to be a significant factor in municipal derivative usage. We also find that more sophisticated managers of large municipalities and less sophisticated managers of small municipalities are more likely to engage in derivative transactions.Peer reviewe

Overview of Campylobacter in poultry, other animal species and in meat in reference to Malaysia

    No full text
This paper gives an overview on the prevalence of Campylobacter in Malaysia in chickens, other food animals, some pet animals as well as in meat from several studies that were carried out over a number of years. The organisms are found to be widespread in poultry. Campylobacter jejuni is frequently isolated in poultry compared to other species. The public heath importance as well as the factors influencing colonization in chickens and contamination of chicken carcasses are briefly discussed

Industrial Organization Case Study of the Indian Information Technology Industry

    No full text
This is an industrial organization study of the Indian IT industry. It specifically examines the software and IT services sectors. There will be limited focus on the domestic IT industry and on the hardware sector. This is because the industry is export focused, and also because the hardware sector revenues are minor relative to the revenues from the “software and services” sector. The Indian IT industry is an attractive area of study for a few reasons: To begin with, it is an emerging industry. This offers excellent opportunities to study an industry as it matures. Secondly, the Indian IT industry is growing at a swift pace, estimated to be between 20-40% a year. Additionally, the IT industry growth has functioned as a catalyst for political and economic changes in India. Any study of an emerging industry must offer the following caveat: There is generally a paucity of accurate data. Therefore, as new information becomes available, our understanding of the industry may change. This is especially true of the Indian IT industry because government records, regulations, and laws have yet to catch up with its immense growth. Furthermore, most firms tightly guard sales figures, as proprietary information. As corporate governance becomes more transparent, and government records are organized, much more accurate information should be available in the future. Finally, this paper is written with the hope that it inspires others to take a closer look at an industry that this author feels is simply aweinspiring in its potential, and in its ability to bring humanity closer to one another
