A mixed culture of Pseudomonas fluorescens BS2 and Pusillimonas noertemannii BS8 degraded poly-γ-d-glutamic acid; when the 2 strains were cultured separately, no hydrolytic activity was apparent. Here we report the draft genome sequences of both soil isolates

    No full text
The plant practice was conducted from June 18 to July 11, 2015 at Universal Robina Corporation- Cereal Plant, Barangay Bagong Ilog, Pasig City, Metro Manila. The main objective of this said plant practice was to brief and acquaint the student with the actual processing plant operations set by the company. The student was assigned in the Quality Assurance Division wherein she was able to experience a hands-on training on the analysis of physicochemical properties as well as the sensory characteristics of the products manufactured by the company which specifically focused on the production of coffee mixes. In line with the quality control and quality assurance procedure, the student was assigned in the acceptance of the raw materials and packaging materials used in the production of the products. The author was also introduced to the in-line and overall processes of production from the weighing of the raw materials to the discharge of the product. Through the whole course of this plant practice, the student was able to familiarize, observe and evaluate the actual technical practices and operations employed in the food industry and made her use the knowledge she gained in the university. This plant practice also gave the author some insights on how to acquire proper work ethics which will serve as a guide as she works in a food processing industry in the future

Effect of foliar application of potassium on wheat tolerance to salt stress.

Salinity stress severely hampers wheat productivity by impairing growth, photosynthesis, and metabolic balance. Potassium nutrition, however, can mitigate these effects by supporting physiological and biochemical stability. This study assessed the impact of foliar potassium application (0, 200 and 400 ppm) on two wheat cultivars, Galaxy-13 and Uqab-2000, exposed to normal (0 mM NaCl) and saline conditions (100 and 150 mM NaCl, respectively). Salinity significantly reduced root and shoot growth, biomass, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, and stomatal conductance. Potassium supplementation, particularly at 400 ppm, alleviated these reductions, with Galaxy-13 showing a 32.01% increase in shoot length and a 45.11% increase in shoot dry weight compared to Uqab-2000. Biochemical analyses revealed that Galaxy-13 sustained higher nitrate and nitrite reductase activities (6.23 and 3.63 μmol NO2 g-1 FW h-1, respectively) and total soluble proteins (10.1 mg g-1 FW), whereas Uqab-2000 accumulated more soluble sugars and free amino acids under stress (9.8 and 19.8 mg g-1 FW, respectively). Oxidative stress indicators (malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide) rose under salinity, but potassium reduced their levels, with Galaxy-13 exhibiting stronger antioxidant regulation. Nutrient profiling further demonstrated that Galaxy-13 maintained higher N, P, and K contents and minimized Na uptake, unlike Uqab-2000, which showed severe ionic imbalance. Multivariate analyses (PCA, heatmap, and correlation) highlighted strong positive associations of potassium, especially K400, with biomass accumulation, photosynthetic efficiency, and nutrient homeostasis. The findings establish that Galaxy-13 possesses superior salinity tolerance and responds more favorably to potassium nutrition. This study provides novel evidence that cultivar-specific potassium management can enhance wheat resilience in saline environments, offering a practical strategy for sustaining yield under stress

The Reception of Walt Whitman in Czech fin-de-siecle Literature

    No full text
The bachelor's composition will focus on the acceptance of Walter Whitman's work in Czech literature at the end of 19th century. It will specialize on the reception of Whitman's work by decadent writers and critics but also for instance by F. X. Salda. The composition will show in which stages the appearance of Whitman's work took place in Czech literature (taking into consideration also the first translations) and which aspects of his work the critique focused on. The author will try to prove which type of influence on literature esthetics of that period we can talk about in Whitman's case and in which areas we can see the most evident influence

Marginalisation, Islamism and the production of the 'other's' 'other'

    No full text
Drawing on the findings of an empirical study of working-class Pakistani Muslims in southern England, this article considers the links between marginalisation, the politics of identity and the position of Pakistani Muslim women. The author shows how marginalisation (emerging from a nexus of oppressions) reinforces 'group' identity, how women are made central to 'group' identity, and how this centrality serves to legitimate their disempowerment. In this way the border that is erected to contain the group is dependent on internal divisions, the existence of which contradicts the notion of group homogeneity

The Experience of Care and Support for YoungPeople with Disabilities in the South Asian Community

    No full text
This thesis focuses on a series of publications by the author which have contributed to discussions on social and health care policy in relation to young people and parents looking after a relative or a person with disabilities in South Asian communities. The thesis reviews the research and publications that address the needs of minority ethnic disabled children and their families. The review is set within the context of literature on ethnicity, race and culture, and has three main facets: (a) to identify and summarise significant surveys, studies and related literature on informal care-giving, (b) to identify relevant literature which throws light on the circumstances which create a need for informal care, and (c) to summarise key findings relating to the provision, access and uptake of social/health care services. The thesis concludes with a discussion about the relevance of the publications to key legislation and policy with implications for practice.EThOS - Electronic Theses Online ServiceGBUnited Kingdo

On the Importance of False Testimony. The Case of Secret Collaborator ‘Jakub’ and Security Service Operational Fiction Concerning Secret Collaborators

    No full text
Autor analizuje przypadek fikcyjnego tajnego współpracownika ps. Jakub, rekonstruując okoliczności rejestracji i wyrejestrowania TW oraz osadzając go na tle innych fikcyjnych działań w Służbie Bezpieczeństwa. Dzięki koncepcji fałszywego świadectwa Robina G. Collingwooda zarysowany zostaje problem fikcji i fałszerstw obecnych w dokumentach operacyjnych SB. W zakończeniu podjęta jest próba syntezy kluczowych problemów dyskursu badawczego skupionego wokół tajnych współpracowników.The author analyses the case of the fictitious secret collaborator under the pseudonym Jacob, reconstructing the circumstances of his registration and deregistration, and setting it against the background of other fictional activities in the Security Service (Polish: Służba Bezpieczeństwa, SB). Thanks to the concept of false testimony by Robin G. Collingwood, the problem of fictions and forgeries present in SB operational documents is outlined. In conclusion, the author attempts to synthesise the critical issues of the research discourse centred around the problem of secret collaborators
