Correspondences dated 1956-1957 between Dr. Aziz Atiya and other university faculty and administrators particularly at the University of Utah. At the time of these correspondences, Dr. Atiya is in a dual capacity as Luce Professor of World Christianity at Union Theological Seminary and Visiting Professor of History at the Near and Middle East Institute of Columbia University. Record contains 13 documents within 13 pages. Content primarily consists of discussion regarding Dr. Atiya\u27s potential opportunity to teach at the University of Utah during summer 1957, along with comments on foreign affairs, personal news, and friendly invitations to meet with colleagues before or after travel1. A one-page typed letter from Albert Ray Olpin, President of the University of Utah, to Dr. Aziz S. Atiya at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, dated June 20, 1956. In the letter, Olpin mentions the several favorable comments he has received regarding Dr. Atiya\u27s commencement address at the University of Utah. Dr. Olpin includes some clippings from the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret New and Telegram (newspapers) which mention Dr. Atiya commencement address and his speech to the Salt Lake Rotary Club. The last paragraph of the letter is a query and invitation to Dr. Atiya to provide a series of lectures or courses at the University of Utah, possibly during the summer or fall of 1957. 2. Nothing but the truth: the Sufi testament of 'Aziz Nasafi

    No full text
`Aziz Nasafi is among the most important Islamic mystics of the medieval period. His achievement was to integrate various ideas, including those of Ibn `Arabi and Najm al-Din Kubrä into a coherent whole, providing Persian speaking Sufis with an introduction to the speculative and practical dimensions of Sufism. This thesis is an attempt to present Nasafi's main teachings. After introducing his life, times and works, the second chapter focuses upon ontology. This is the spine of Nasafi's treatises and it is based upon the Sufi interpretation of God's incomparability and similarity (tanzih wa tashbih) and His infinite self-disclosure which occurs within a form processed by the imagination. The second chapter investigates the different forms of knowledge available to Sufis, which includes sense perception, reason and mystical knowledge. Nasafi's presentation depicts all three in a hierarchical structure with Sufi knowledge at the pinnacle. Having discussed the theoretical nature of Sufism, chapter four deals with the practical element of Sufism and how it is able to contribute to felicity in this life. Having followed the Sufi path, it is possible that a wayfarer may experience unity with God. This is examined in chapter five, and Nasafi's description is compared with that of other Sufis in an attempt to show his "orthodox" position within Sufism. It is also argued that modern models of mystical experience do not fit Nasafi's depiction of tashbih-tanzih, and that one also needs to re-think the idea of perennial philosophy. Finally, the perfection of man is considered through examining the relationship between Prophecy and Friendship of God. Sufis interpreted Friendship as the interior element of Prophecy and were able to offer new insights to Islamic doctrine

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Mispricing and risk of R&D investment in European firms

    No full text
We study whether R&D-intensive firms earn superior stock returns compared to matched size and book-to-market portfolios across several financial markets in Europe. Mispricing can arise if investors are not able to correctly estimate the long-term benefits of R&D investment or whether R&D firms are more risky than others. The results confirm that more innovative firms can earn future excess returns. Stocks listed on continental Europe markets and operating in high-tech sectors are more prone to undervaluation. This can be caused in the first case by information asymmetries that are more severe in bank-based countries. No evidence is found for a different risk pattern of R&D-intensive stocks

Copyright @ 2004 IEEEA method is presented for finding the optimum fixed LC compensator for power factor correction of nonlinear loads where both source voltage and load current harmonics are present. The LC combination is selected because pure capacitive capacitors alone would not sufficiently correct the power factor. Optimization minimizes the transmission loss, maximizes the power factor, and maximizes the efficiency. The performance of the obtained compensator is discussed by means of numerical examples
