"It is only watching, waiting, attention": rethinking love with alain badiou and simone weil

    No full text
Love has traditionally been thought in conjunction with emotion, affect, passion and feelings. The work of Alain Badiou, however, challenges such an "anti-philosophical" position, and posits that the truly philosophical way to approach love is through logic, which also underscores loves close kinship to thought and to truth. In this essay, the author draws on Badiou\u27s thoughts on love to theorise an amorous politics. Responding to critiques on Badiou\u27s evental politics as essentially passive, the author suggests that the thought of Simone Weil offers a way to think of waiting as a pre-evental form of political agency. The author argues that positioning Badiou\u27s thought with Weil\u27s makes even more legible the political utility of his radical philosophy of love

In this study, the author investigates the challenges newspaper health reporters encounter in Nigeria in the discharge of their professional duty. Through in-depth interviews with 13 health reporters in Nigeria, the author discovered that: health and science researchers often refused to talk to health reportersand that health reporters do not have access to current health data and statisticsno provision for on-the-job insurance coveragesinsecurity and poor conditions of service. The study, however, concludes that these challenges, which majorly reflect the common features of developing countries, can be mitigated if media organisations and the Nigerian government play their roles, to facilitate the development of health reporting field to the level found developed countries

A review of three major sociological theories and an islamic perspective

    No full text
This article examines critically the three major sociological theories namely, Structural Functionalism, Symbolic Interactionism and Conflict theory. These theories are formulated on the pattern of science where scientific method is strictly adhered to. Considering the nature and the essence of the social phenomenon and its component parts the author argues that the application of pure scientific method in the study or analysis of the social phenomenon fail to present an accurate understanding of the social phenomenon. Thus, an alternative method which is capable of taking into consideration both physical and metaphysical aspects of the social phenomenon is required. Toward this end this article attempts to delineate the three major theories of sociology, their shortcoming and loophole, then attempt to highlight the constituent elements of the social phenomenon and their significance in formulation of comprehensive sociological theories. An Islamic perspective on sociological theories is also provided in the last part of this article where the discrepancy of the sociological theories are disclosed and a proposal for a more dynamic method for the formulation of sociological theories of comprehensive nature is made
