Luminescent Measurement Systems for the Investigation of a Scramjet Inlet-Isolator
Scramjets have become a main focus of study for many researchers, due to their application as propulsive devices in hypersonic flight. This entails a detailed understanding of the fluid mechanics involved to be able to design and operate these engines with maximum efficiency even at their off-design conditions. It is the objective of the present cold-flow investigation to study and analyse experimentally the mechanics of the fluid structures encountered within a generic scramjet inlet at M = 5. Traditionally, researchers have to rely on stream-thrust analysis, which requires the complex setup of a mass flow meter, a force balance and a heat transducer in order to measure inlet-isolator performance. Alternatively, the pitot rake could be positioned at inlet-isolator exit plane, but this method is intrusive to the flow, and the number of pitot tubes is limited by the model size constraint. Thus, this urgent need for a better flow diagnostics method is addressed in this paper. Pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) has been applied to investigate the flow characteristics on the compression ramp, isolator surface and isolator sidewall. Numerous shock-shock interactions, corner and shoulder separation regions, as well as shock trains were captured by the luminescent system. The performance of the scramjet inlet-isolator has been shown to improve when operated in a modest angle of attack

Device identification using optimized digital footprints
The rapidly increasing number of internet of things (IoT) and non-IoT devices has imposed new security challenges to network administrators. Accurate device identification in the increasingly complex network structures is necessary. In this paper, a device fingerprinting (DFP) method has been proposed for device identification, based on digital footprints, which devices use for communication over a network. A subset of nine features have been selected from the network and transport layers of a single transmission control protocol/internet protocol packet based on attribute evaluators in Weka, to generate device-specific signatures. The method has been evaluated on two online datasets, and an experimental dataset, using different supervised machine learning (ML) algorithms. Results have shown that the method is able to distinguish device type with up to 100% precision using the random forest (RF) classifier, and classify individual devices with up to 95.7% precision. These results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed DFP method for device identification, in order to provide a more secure and robust network
Flow diagnostics in shock wave-boundary layer interaction experiments in hypersonic flow
Shock Wave-Boundary Layer Interaction (SBLI) is a phenomenon occurring in highspeed
propulsion systems that is highly undesirable. Numerous methods have been tested to
manipulate and control SBLI which includes both active and passive flow control techniques. To
determine the improvements brought by the flow control techniques, advanced and state-of the-art
flow diagnostics and experimental techniques are required, especially when it involves high-speed
flows. In this study, a number of advanced flow diagnostics were employed to investigate the effect
of micro-vortex generators in controlling SBLI in Mach 5 such as Pressure Sensitive Paints (PSP),
Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), schlieren photography and oil-flow visualization. The flow
diagnostics provided both qualitative and quantitative information of the boundary-layer separation.
The improvements of the separation region controlled by the micro-vortex generators were clearly
visualized and characterized
Background-oriented schlieren (BOS) for scramjet inlet-isolator investigation
Background-oriented Schlieren (BOS) technique is a recently invented non-intrusive flow diagnostic method which has yet to be fully explored in its capabilities. In this paper, BOS technique has been applied for investigating the general flow field characteristics inside a generic scramjet inlet-isolator with Mach 5 flow. The difficulty in finding the delicate balance between measurement sensitivity and measurement area image focusing has been demonstrated. The differences between direct cross-correlation (DCC) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) raw data processing algorithm have also been demonstrated. As an exploratory study of BOS capability, this paper found that BOS is simple yet robust enough to be used to visualize complex flow in a scramjet inlet in hypersonic flow. However, in this case its quantitative data can be strongly affected by 3-dimensionality thus obscuring the density value with significant errors
Micro-ramps for hypersonic flow control
Shock/boundary layer interaction (SBLI) is an undesirable phenomenon, occurring in high-speed propulsion systems. The conventional method to manipulate and control SBLI is using a bleed system that involves the removal of a certain amount of mass of the inlet flow to control boundary layer separation. However, the system requires a larger nacelle to compensate the mass loss, larger nacelles contribute to additional weight and drag and reduce the overall performance. This study investigates a novel type of flow control device called micro-ramps, a part of the micro vortex generators (VGs) family that intends to replace the bleed technique. Micro-ramps produce pairs of counter-rotating streamwise vortices, which help to suppress SBLI and reduce the chances of flow separation. Experiments were done at Mach 5 with two micro-ramp models of different sizes. Schlieren photography, surface flow visualization and infrared thermography were used in this investigation. The results revealed the detailed flow characteristics of the micro-ramp, such as the primary and secondary vortices. This helps us to understand the overall flow physics of micro-ramps in hypersonic flow and their application for SBLI control
Assessing the Performance of Hypersonic Inlets by Applying a Heat Source with the Throttling Effect
Utilization of a heat source to regulate the shock wave–boundary layer interaction (SWBLI) of hypersonic inlets during throttling was computationally investigated. A plug was installed at the intake isolator’s exit, which caused throttling. The location of the heat source was established by analysing the interaction of the shockwave from the compression ramp and the contact spot of the shockwave with that of the inlet cowl. Shockwave interaction inside the isolator was investigated using steady and transient cases. The present computational work was validated using previous experimental work. The flow distortion (FD) and total pressure recovery (TPR) of the inflows were also studied. We found that varying the size and power of the heat source influenced the shockwaves that originated around it and affected the SWBLI within the isolator. This influenced most of the performance measures. As a result, the TPR increased and the FD decreased when the heat source was applied. Thus, the use of a heat source for flow control was found to influence the performance of hypersonic intakes
