In the studying and interpreting the history of Turkic peoples, the question sometimes arises about the continuity of the stages of ethnic history, their legal traditions and political institutions, and even statehood, less often the territory. This is due to the mobility of ethnic groups in historical retrospect, with the migration of peoples or with the movements of individual representatives of the ruling dynasties. In this regard, in histo¬rical science the question of localization of the ancestral homelands and migrations of Turkic peoples is more often raised. They were often characterized as military legionnaires (for example, Kipchaks), conquerors (Oghuz, Seljuks, Mughals, Uzbeks) or displaced involuntary persons (Mamluks and ghouls). Of particular interest is the question of the process of fragmentation of the state of Genghis Khan, with the formation of the Ulus system, the collapse of the Khanate Hordes and Uluses, and the emergence of new ethno-political formations. This review article provides the brief overview and analysis of the book “Abulkhair Sheybanid – the last ruler of Dashti-Qipchaq” (Almaty: Golden Book, 2018. – 176 p., in Kazakh and Russian), New materials and scientific conclusions of its author – Doctor of Science (History), professor Burkut G. Ayagan on the history of the post-Zolotovordian time associated with the state of Uzbeks-Kazakhs are considered. The book provides new data on the history of Dashti- Qipchaq in the 14th–15th Centuries. The reviewer gives a theoretical interpretation of the general vision of the course of historical processes

An Interdisciplinary Study of Narrative Structure in Dash Akol as a Short Story and Dash Akol as a Movie

    No full text
This paper undertakes an interdisciplinary study of the short story “Dash Akol” and the movie adapted from it. “Dash Akol” is a short story written by a famous Iranian author Sadeq Hedayat in 1932. Hedayat’s “Dash Akol” was made into a movie in 1971 by Masoud Kimiai. There are some discrepancies between the short story “Dash Akol” and the movie, triggering a number of significant implications. This article discusses these discrepancies along with Hedayat’s and Kimiai’s narrative techniques. To this end, it applies Genett’s (1988) Narrative Discourse and his three main narrative methods: narrating, characterization, and focalization. Meanwhile, it brings in Rimmon-Kenen’s (2002) strategy to study characters, and Stam and Burgoyne and Flitterman-lewis (2005) to show the ways in which the movie has deviated from the story. In terms of characterization, it studies traits such as, action, speech, naming and setting

Situation of Women in the FinTech Community : Nadia Edwards-Dashti: FinTech Women Walk the Talk: Moving the Needle for Workplace Gender Equality

    No full text
Today’s society expects women to be successful managers, mothers and businesswomen in one person. The author, Nadia Edwards-Dashti, may act as a role model for women who want to move up the corporate ladder. She is the co-founder of a leading recruitment business based in London (Harrington Starr), which has helped over 2,000 people find jobs in the FinTech field. The idea of writing the book began with a podcast, in which she talked to 150 women about farreaching as well as sensitive topics. In her book, she interviewed almost 200 people in managerial positions and with considerable experience at FinTech companies covering a wide range of activities. She focuses on the question of how difficult it is for women to succeed at FinTech companies today. She also explains that the disadvantaged situation may and should be changed. There are several companies where employees are discriminated on the grounds of their gender, religion, ethnicity or culture, which is also reflected by significant pay gaps

Egyptian and kuwaiti arabic in contact: the case of kuwaiti /k, tʃ / and /θ/

Studies of dialect  have recently attracted the interest of sociolinguists who are trying to seek  answers as to how and why mutually intelligible linguistic varieties may influence one another when they  come into contact, and more importantly the linguistic outcomes of such c ontact. These studies show  that it is very unlikely that adult immigrants can fully and accurately acquire a non - native variety.  Chambers (1992) argues that the acquisition of a second dialect is governed by a number of linguistic rules. In a previous stu dy (Dashti 199 7 ), the author examined the acquisition of three  phonological variables , namely,  (q)  ( ʤ ) and ( ð)  of Kuwaiti Arabic together with their variants by Egyptian  Arabs whose native Arabic variety is Egyptian Arabic. It was suggested then, that the  acquisition of both  the variable (k) and the variable (θ) in the speech of Egyptian Arabs are also worth investigating in future  research.  This study aimed at investigating the acquisition of the Kuwaiti variables (k) and  (θ) and their  variants by Egyptian acquirers in the light of Chambers ’ principles. 40 subjects were interviewed and 40  hours of tape - recorded conversation were collected, phonetically transcribed and then statistically  analysed. Analysis showed that both variables were complex and difficul t to acquire by Egyptians.

Robotic Fabrication as Catalysts for Emergent Topologies and Traditions: Nomadic Small Pavilions and Permanent Mega Structures in Kuwait

    No full text
This paper reviews tendencies and drives for future parametric computational design and robotic fabrication/construction automation. It sheds light on the local current impact of the computational paradigm and mass-customized robotic fabrication in Kuwait. This paper is intended to answer the following two questions: Is parametric design and robotic fabrication allowing for emergent architectural topologies? Is robotic fabrication a catalyst for legitimizing change in architectural traditions at a local level? This has been experimented on two building scales. One with more ephemeral or transient nomadic pavilions, designed by the author, intended to demand our momentary attention, offering essential opportunities for research, experimentation, heuristic testing and prototyping - public delight and exposure. Though impermanent, these can even go so far as to be catalysts for positive change displaying affirmative qualities of temporal architecture. On the other hand, the author shares parametric design and robotic fabrication practices/consultation on local permanent mega structures currently under construction. Such mega buildings act as proof that geometrically complex buildings do not stay in the realm of small experimental and heuristic research only, but incorporated in large-scale complex building, branding and placing countries on the global map. Robotic fabrication and construction gives rise to new paradigms such as "zero-tolerance" building with "file-to-factory" production allowing for Ruskinian tectonics blending structures with ornamental aesthetics, similar to gothic architecture. With the profusion of robotic fabrication and construction, the author claims that change in the physical built environment is eminent. A final inquiry will be raised as a future research topic pertaining to robotic in-situ "mobility-on-demand", Artificial Intelligence, "Machine Learning", "Big Data" and "evolutionary robotics" which raises the question of what will our future mass-customized cities look like and what type of physical infrastructure is needed to facilitate mobile robotic fabrication and construction

Surgical treatment remains challenging because of the close vicinity of the deep venous system and the mesencephalo-diencephalic structures in this region. We present the surgical approaches and techniques in a consecutive series of 119 patients treated by the senior author (J.H.) between 1980 and 2007 at 2 different neurosurgical university centers in Kuopio and Helsinki, Finland. Methods: Of the included patients, 107 (90%) presented with pineal region tumors and 12 (10%) with vascular malformations. The ITSC route was used for removal of the lesion in 111 (93%) patients and the OIH approach in 8 (7%) patients. All except one patient were operated on in a sitting position. Results: We reviewed all clinical data and radiographic images and analyzed all surgical videos. The pineal lesions were removed completely in most cases (88%). There was no Surgical mortality. Twenty-two (18%) of the patients had complications in the postoperative period; these included 1 epidural hematoma, 9 transient Parinaud syndrome, 2 meningitis, 3 wound infections, 2 transient memory disturbances, 2 mild hemiparesis, 1 CSF fistula, and 2 cranial nerves palsies (Wand VI). During a 3.5-year follow-up, 12 patients with malignant lesions died; all patients with benign tumors survived. Conclusions: The ITSC route is a safe and effective surgical approach, associated with low morbidity, complete lesion removal, and definitive histopathologic diagnosis. Considering risk vs benefit, we therefore believe that the surgical treatment can be offered in most cases as the first treatment option for pineal tumors. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

The literature of sufism is a magnificent part of the Persian literature which consists of awakening purports and topics about the love of free. But because of the sequestered lives of a great many sufies, this reality is in a state of neglect. In this article , the author has tried to mention this reality that sufism litreture is an awakening litreture and at the same time, has analyzed the essential reasons of this affair and in this procedure He utilized the words of the magnanimous sufies. But all of these words have been saied for achiving this goal that paying more attention to this kind of litreture as a worthy and meaningful one is necessary and It is a true way to grace and beauty indeed

About years before sufism, mysticism and its literature were iorn. But in this period a basic question was important and essential hat is this affair heavenJy, luminous ,divine and on the whole true and ibiding or , human , territorial and in other words unstable? or achieving the answer of this question we will notice the ideas of great learned men of mysticism, shia and sunnite .And also study of ideas of contemporary researchers. Then author will put forward a viewpoint on the basis of definition that was proved scientifically by L .Masinion and his student P .Noya . The result is that suficism and mysticism litreture is human and the paraphrase of religious statements with an art language and in fact, a kind of epistemological religious pluralism

Vitamin C and kidney transplantation: Nutritional status, potential efficacy, safety, and interactions

    No full text
Background and aim: There are several observational and interventional studies regarding the advantages of sufficient serum levels of vitamin C and the evaluation of the effects of vitamin C supplementation post kidney transplantation. These studies have been put together to investigate the role of vitamin C post-kidney transplantation and make suggestions for designing future studies based on the use of vitamin C supplements or nutritional interventions among these patients. Methods: This narrative review was done by searching in the Embase, PubMed, and SCOPUS databases. Results: The results are presented in several sections as follows; nutritional status, potential protective effects, safety concerns, and medications/laboratory tests interactions of vitamin C. Conclusions: Kidney transplant recipients are prone to vitamin C deficiency, which is related to higher mortality based on several long-term observational studies. Vitamin C supplementation improves endothelial function and creatinine clearance. Vitamin C is considered as a safe supplement, however, side effects such as kidney stones, pro-oxidant effect, hemolysis in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, impact on lymphocytic activity, acid-base disturbance, and increased sodium load following its administration have been reported. Interaction of vitamin C and cyclosporine is the most important interaction with post-renal transplant medications. Vitamin C also interferes with creatinine assay using Jaffe and enzymatic methods

Nonstructural Vulnerability Functions for Building Categories

    No full text
Nonstructural building components account for the majority of building construction cost and as a result, their damage in earthquakes can dominate repair costs. The relationships between earthquake excitation and repair cost for nonstructural components are sometime depicted in seismic vulnerability functions. These relationships can be used at the level of individual buildings, as in ATC-58 (Applied Technology Council 2012), but there is also a need for such relationships at the level of building categories, for use in societal-level risk modeling. This work addresses the latter problem. There are several ways to address the problem: 1) by empirical means (relating aggregate nonstructural loss to ground motion through regression analysis); 2) by analytical means (relating structural response to component-level damage, which is then related to repair costs); and 3) by expert opinion. This work deals with analytical means. There is a growing library of component-level fragility functions for nonstructural components, and at least in the United States, an extensive database of costs for performing repairs. These enable the development of analytical relationships between structural response and nonstructural loss. Our intention is to produce and illustrate a method for developing broadly applicable analytical seismic vulnerability functions for non-structural components of buildings defined only by broad categories of material, lateral force-resisting system, and height. The methodology is developed with collaboration and supervision of Professor Keith Porter at the University of Colorado Boulder and is intended for use as a guideline by the Global Earthquake Model. A central challenge in such an effort is that the source data can be highly detailed. These detailed elements must be aggregated to systems and thence to all nonstructural components. So we (the present author with assistance and feedback form collaborators in the GEM project) have developed the methodology with a broad-brush approach, using cost manuals to identify the 4 or 5 systems that contribute the most cost to a typical building of the given category, and determining from a modest sample of buildings within the category of interest the detailed components that appear to be most common within those systems
