Energy TCD - robust and simple failure prediction unifying the TCD and ASED criterion

    No full text
Robust and simple failure prediction is a relevant and active field of research. The present work aims at unifying the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) and Averaged Strain Energy Density (ASED) criterion. The proposed Energy TCD is formulated along with analytical expressions for the characteristic length scales and validated using experimental data. On this data set, the accuracy of the Energy TCD is similar to that of the classical methods. Most importantly, the presented methods allow to transfer the point-based calibration technique from notched specimens, which is common for the TCD, to the Energy TCD ASED criterion. © 2022 The Author(s

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original author and source are credited. The systemic interactions among depressive symptoms, rumination, and stress are important to understanding depression but have not yet been quantified. In this article, we present a system dynamics simulation model of depression that captures the reciprocal relationships among stressors, rumination, and depression. Building on the response styles theory, this model formalizes three interdependent mechanisms: 1) Rumination contributes to 'keeping stressors alive'; 2) Rumination has a direct impact on depressive symptoms; and 3) Both 'stressors kept alive' and current depressive symptoms contribute to rumination. The strength of these mechanisms is estimated using data from 661 adolescents (353 girls and 308 boys) from two middle schools (grades 6-8). These estimates indicate that rumination contributes to depression by keeping stressors 'alive'-and the individual activated- even after the stressor has ended. This mechanism is stronger among girls than boys, increasing their vulnerability to a rumination reinforcing loop. Different profiles of depression emerge over time depending on initial levels of depressive symptoms, rumination, and stressors as well as the occurrence rate for stressors; levels of rumination and occurrence of stressors are stronger contributors to long-term depression. Our systems model is a steppingstone towards a more comprehensive understanding of depression in which reinforcing feedback mechanisms play a significant role. Future research is needed to expand this simulation model to incorporate other drivers of depression and provide a more holistic tool forstudying depression.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (Award R21MH100515)National Institute of Mental Health (U.S.) (Award R21MH100515

Assessing Diabetic Polyneuropathy Prevalence in Hospitalized Patients: A Comparative Study Using the Michigan Self-Report Questionnaire and Physical Examination Methods

    No full text
Conclusions: This study found a high prevalence of DPN among hospitalized diabetic patients, highlighting the urgent need for effective screening methods. The moderate agreement between the Michigan questionnaire and physical examination suggests that the questionnaire could serve as a simple, cost-effective tool for early DPN detection. Further research and wider implementation of these screening tools may enhance early diagnosis and help reduce the risk of severe complications, such as limb amputation

Iranian exile: The diversity of a phenomenon

    No full text
International audienceThis collective work in the continuity of the previous one questions the meaning of exile at the beginning of the 21st century. After having studied the role of exiles throughout the world throughout the 20th century in the great social and political changes, we have tried to understand through a triple principle (hostility towards the regime of his country of origin, forced departure and plans to return to their country of origin in the short or long term) the change in the identity of exiles over time. This brings us to the concept of the labyrinth in harmony with the third space: the exiles are in a cultural in-between where the cultures of origin and host intermingle, going beyond the dominant dichotomous vision. The five authors of this research offer us an overview of the different aspects of the labyrinth. Sacha Habibi is interested in the political dimension of Iranian associations in Belgium, a priori cultural is dominant. Keanu Heydari examines the trajectory of an emblematic figure of a committed political exile, Mohammad Hossein Asiai, under the Shah's regime in France. The third author, Mathilde Jondeau, studies the children of exiles in the 1980s and 1990s. She shows the different levels of cultural transmission (knowledge of the language and traditions) depending on the involvement of parents and child. Valentin Rebour, by drawing on archives in Germany and France, tries to understand the trajectories of exiles from the origin of the Shah's regime until the 1990s. State surveillance of the activities of exiles and the complexity of the trajectories are at the heart of his analyses. Finally, Mohammad Javad Shafiei turns to the glottophobia suffered by non-Far ethnic groups within the religious theocracy to analyze the different aspects of this discrimination.

Abstract Investors and creditors expect that the performance of the firms, which they invested in them, proceed according to their expected conditions and their performance evaluation of the firms based on their type and size. Because of owners and shareholders multiplicity, direct monitoring on firm performance is not possible by shareholders, but this group can only receive benefit from performance evaluation from the firm. Therefore it is logical that by creating firm evaluation mechanisms they are up to maintane their benefit.

Religious Culture Versus Secular State; Sociology of Spirituality in France

    No full text
The French society is now a symbolic representation of state and religion confrontation. On the one hand there is the state with its modern interpretation of secularism that aims at confining religious practice to its former private domain; on the other, one should take heed of a newly emerged religious trend which shuns its previously assigned role by asserting that a secular regime can no longer ignore the individuals’ religious rights, even though they may be unprecedented. But what is appealing to an unprejudiced researcher is the occurrence of a so-called spiritual orientation in the French society as an aftermath of this confrontation. The author has used various methods such as field study, literature review and interview with French citizens and authorities in order to make a sociological hypothesis: To the extent that religious culture has gained momentum in the secular society, the secular regime has extended its power beyond its former domain to even some of the citizens’ private affairs

Elasticity Approach to Predict Shape Transformation of Functionally Graded Mechanical Metamaterial under Tension

    No full text
The re-entrant structures are among the simple unit cell designs that have been widely used in the design of mechanical metamaterials. Changing the geometrical parameters of these unit cell structures, their overall elastic properties (i.e., elastic stiffness and Poisson’s ratio), can be simultaneously tuned. Therefore, different design strategies (e.g., functional gradient) can be implemented to design advanced engineering materials with unusual properties. Here, using the theory of elasticity and finite element modeling, we propose a fast and direct approach to effectively design the microarchitectures of mechanical metamaterials with re-entrant structures that allow predicting complex deformation shapes under uniaxial tensile loading. We also analyze the efficiency of this method by back calculating the microarchitectural designs of mechanical metamaterials to predict the complex 1-D external contour of objects (e.g., vase and foot). The proposed approach has several applications in creating programmable mechanical metamaterials with shape matching properties for exoskeletal and soft robotic devices

Design, implementation, and evaluation of a virtual pulmonary rehabilitation training course for medical interns in COVID-19

    No full text
Pulmonary rehabilitation has an influential role in improving the symptoms, reducing subacute and chronic complications, and increasing the performance of patients with COVID-19. Medical interns can play an essential role in training patients. Since, at the time of the research, these concepts were not in the general medical curriculum in Iran, the interns were not trained in this field. This study aimed to design, implement, and evaluate the virtual training course for pulmonary rehabilitation for medical interns in the COVID-19 crisis. A cross-sectional study (with an instructional design approach) was conducted at an academic center in 2021 on 25 medical interns. The newly designed educational content included multimedia files and educational videos offered to the participants. The data collection tools were pre- and post-test, attitude, and satisfaction evaluation questionnaires. Data were analyzed using SPSS (one-sample and paired t-test). The average age of the participants was 26.24 ± 0.92, and most were women (14 (56%)). The average knowledge score after the course (18.52 ± 4.44) compared to before (11.12 ± 2.38) was significant (P < 0.001). The average score of attitudes (55.04 ± 6.49) and satisfaction (92.92 ± 10.69) had a significant difference (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001) and indicated the desirability of the course. Considering the results of this course in improving students’ knowledge, attitude, and satisfaction, it is suggested to add this topic to the general medical curriculum (pulmonary or infectious diseases courses)
