Facile synthesis of CTAB coated Au-Ag core-shell nanoparticles and their catalytic and antibacterial activity

No full text
This work reports the synthesis of cationic surfactant-coated Au-Ag core-shell (Au@Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) via a straightforward seed-mediated approach. The UV-Vis analysis showed that the plasmon peak position of synthesized Au@Ag NPs correlated with the thickness of the Ag shell encapsulating the Au core. The Au@Ag NPs have shown impressive catalytic performance for the reduction reactions of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and methyl orange (MO) where the apparent rate constant experienced a remarkable increase by 67-fold and 90-fold, respectively, when Au@Ag NPs with the Ag-shell thickness of 6.3 nm were employed as a catalyst, compared to Au NPs. This multifold improvement in the activity cannot be simply accounted for by the increase in surface area of NPs and is attributed to the electronic synergistic effects between Au and Ag in the core-shell NPs. Furthermore, while Au@Ag NPs exhibited heightened antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli bacteria, this enhancement is modest. Notably, the anticipated significant enhancement attributed to Ag's renowned antibacterial properties was not observed. The presence of cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) enables both Au and Au@Ag NPs to effectively bind with the negatively charged bacterial cell membranes through electrostatic interactions. Apparently, CTAB enables both types of NPs to effectively target and eliminate bacteria with comparable efficiency.</p

Participatory forest management (PFM) initiatives have been in place in Pakistan for almost three decades, but apparently there have not been any visible impacts. The goal of this study was to evaluate two participatory forest management (PFM) programs, namely Integrated Land Management (ILM) and Participatory Watershed Management (PWSM), by assessing the levels of participation, factors influencing participation and the impacts of these programs on the socioeconomic conditions of local people and forest/watershed resource development. A multistage random sampling technique was applied to select units of analysis, households (respondents). The total sample drawn was 1,817 units, 1,479 from the program sample group and 338 from the no-program group. A structured questionnaire was used in face to face interviews to collect research data. However, qualitative data collected through informal discussions, group meetings, and focus groups were used to subjectively support the results of the quantitative data. The social, economic and forest resources impacts were assessed using different statistical analyses. The levels of participation of participants, forms of participation with reference to programs, and socio-demographic characteristics of participants and non-participants were measured using a three dimensional framework and Participants’ Participation Index (PPI)

TOPLESS Corepressors as an Emerging Hub of Plant Pathogen Effectors

No full text
Transcriptional corepressors form an ancient and essential layer of gene expression control in eukaryotes. TOPLESS and TOPLESS-RELATED (TPL/TPR) proteins constitute a conserved family of Groucho (Gro)/thymidine uptake 1 (Tup1)-type transcriptional corepressors and control diverse growth, developmental, and stress signaling responses in plants. Because of their central and versatile regulatory roles, they act as a signaling hub to integrate various input signaling pathways in the transcriptional responses. Recently, increasing pieces of evidence indicate the roles of TPL/TPR family proteins in the modulation of plant immunity. This is supported by studies on effectors of distantly related pathogens that target TPL/TPR proteins in planta. In this short review, we will summarize the latest findings concerning pathogens targeting plant TPL/TPR proteins to manipulate plant signaling responses for the successful invasion of their hosts. AI-embedded IoT healthcare optimization with trust-aware mobile edge computing:AI-Embedded IoT Healthcare Optimization..

No full text
Embedded technologies combined with the Internet of Things (IoT), have transformed healthcare monitoring systems into automated and responsive platforms. In recent decades, many existing approaches have been based on edge computing to reduce response time in patient monitoring and provide a reliable method for interaction among the medical team and experts during disease diagnosis. Such approaches are the interconnection of battery-powered devices and physical objects to capture the physiological data streams for medical treatment and facilitate personalized healthcare systems. However, as wireless devices have limited resources for fulfilling end-user requests, this affects the accuracy of the medical system, especially in the presence of malicious devices on the communication infrastructure. Under diverse network conditions, such solutions lower the reliability level of the devices and increase the likelihood of suspicious processes. Therefore, to keep these significant concerns in IoT-based healthcare applications, trust and security should be adopted while collecting patients' data over an insecure medium. In this research study, we propose a model referred to as Edge-Cloud Trusted Intelligence (ECTI), aiming to decrease the computing overhead on the devices. Additionally, multi-level security is implemented to ensure privacy preservation by adopting trusted behavior when communicating in a distributed environment. The edges utilize resources efficiently by employing task offloading strategies, enabling lightweight collaborative decision-making for routing in the healthcare domain. The performance results revealed notable improvement of the proposed model against related schemes in terms of various network metrics. [Abstract copyright: © 2025. The Author(s).

AI-Based Wormhole Attack Detection Techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks

No full text
The popularity of wireless sensor networks for establishing different communication systems is increasing daily. A wireless network consists of sensors prone to various security threats. These sensor nodes make a wireless network vulnerable to denial-of-service attacks. One of them is a wormhole attack that uses a low latency link between two malicious sensor nodes and affects the routing paths of the entire network. This attack is brutal as it is resistant to many cryptographic schemes and hard to observe within the network. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the literature on the subject of the detection and mitigation of wormhole attacks in wireless sensor networks. The existing surveys are also explored to find gaps in the literature. Several existing schemes based on different methods are also evaluated critically in terms of throughput, detection rate, low energy consumption, packet delivery ratio, and end-to-end delay. As artificial intelligence and machine learning have massive potential for the efficient management of sensor networks, this paper provides AI- and ML-based schemes as optimal solutions for the identified state-of-the-art problems in wormhole attack detection. As per the author’s knowledge, this is the first in-depth review of AI- and ML-based techniques in wireless sensor networks for wormhole attack detection. Finally, our paper explored the open research challenges for detecting and mitigating wormhole attacks in wireless networks

University Students Suicide in US: Issue that needs attention and Prevention

No full text
Here is the first single book to exclusively address this tragic behavior. From the foreword by Dr. Mamoona Muzammil to the final conclusions and recommendations, College Student Suicide serves as both a primer and a state-of-the-art volume on youth suicide in the higher education setting. Experts provide important data on suicide, examine the risk factors for suicide, and explore preventive interventions and the delivery of other necessary services. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 18-24. What is not always captured by this statistic is the strong emotional impact that suicide has on young people who are losing peers, friends, partners, and siblings to suicide and mental health issues. We are in a mental health crisis. There needs to be a change in the way we approach suicide and mental health, particularly on college campuses. But where do we start? I’m Fine: A Student Perspective on Suicide and Mental Health on College Campuses takes an in-depth look into what schools can be doing right now to positively impact the well-being of their students. In this book, the author shares detailed research and insights from nearly 20 leaders across the country who dedicate their lives to preventing suicide and promoting mental health. At its core, I’m Fine helps to decrease stigma, break stereotypes, provide psychoeducation, and increase conversations around mental health, enabling students to answer the question “How are you doing?” with more than a cursory “I’m Fine.” The author provides a framework and solutions to suicide prevention and improved student mental health that university leaders can incorporate on their campuses. This book can change your life, the life of a loved one, and the lives of college students across the world. Suicide is a complex, multifactorial phenomenon that is difficult to understand and accept, affecting a significant and growing number of the world\u27s population. However, it is permeated by taboos and prejudices that lack confidentiality, and discussion. There is a need to demystify misconceptions surrounding the phenomenon and raise awareness about it, enabling the identification of risk factors, provide reception and direct the person to appropriate treatment. Highly valuable reading for the entire college or university community, this major new book is particularly recommended for college and university faculty and administrators, residence hall directors, residence assistants, health center staff, parents of college students, and students themselves

No full text
In this study, we investigated the effect of long-term pesticides and chemical fertilizers application on the microbial communities specifically anammox and denitrification bacteria in rice field soils. The abundances of microbial communities (16S rDNA), anammox (hszB), and denitrification (narG, nirK, nirS, and nosZ) genes were quantified by q-PCR. 10 pesticides (5 insecticides, 3 fungicides and 2 herbicides) and chemical fertilizers urea, potassium, phosphate, DAP (di-ammonium phosphate), gypsum, and boric acid were used by local farmers. Nitrate, SOC (ammonia, soil organic carbon), N and C content significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in the rice field soils as compared to the upland soils. Abundance of 16S rDNA, hszB, narG, nirK, nirS, and nosZ genes significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in the rice field soils and positively correlated with chemical properties of soils. Our results provide useful information and further maintenance should be instilled to the potential of chemical and biological factors decreased in rice field soils

Global, regional, and national incidence of six major immune-mediated inflammatory diseases: findings from the global burden of disease study 2019

No full text
Background: The causes for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) are diverse and the incidence trends of IMIDs from specific causes are rarely studied. The study aims to investigate the pattern and trend of IMIDs from 1990 to 2019. Methods: We collected detailed information on six major causes of IMIDs, including asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis, between 1990 and 2019, derived from the Global Burden of Disease study in 2019. The average annual percent change (AAPC) in number of incidents and age standardized incidence rate (ASR) on IMIDs, by sex, age, region, and causes, were calculated to quantify the temporal trends. Findings: In 2019, rheumatoid arthritis, atopic dermatitis, asthma, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, inflammatory bowel disease accounted 1.59%, 36.17%, 54.71%, 0.09%, 6.84%, 0.60% of overall new IMIDs cases, respectively. The ASR of IMIDs showed substantial regional and global variation with the highest in High SDI region, High-income North America, and United States of America. Throughout human lifespan, the age distribution of incident cases from six IMIDs was quite different. Globally, incident cases of IMIDs increased with an AAPC of 0.68 and the ASR decreased with an AAPC of −0.34 from 1990 to 2019. The incident cases increased across six IMIDs, the ASR of rheumatoid arthritis increased (0.21, 95% CI 0.18, 0.25), while the ASR of asthma (AAPC = −0.41), inflammatory bowel disease (AAPC = −0.72), multiple sclerosis (AAPC = −0.26), psoriasis (AAPC = −0.77), and atopic dermatitis (AAPC = −0.15) decreased. The ASR of overall and six individual IMID increased with SDI at regional and global level. Countries with higher ASR in 1990 experienced a more rapid decrease in ASR. Interpretation: The incidence patterns of IMIDs varied considerably across the world. Innovative prevention and integrative management strategy are urgently needed to mitigate the increasing ASR of rheumatoid arthritis and upsurging new cases of other five IMIDs, respectively.
