Government decentralization as a disincentive for transnational terror? : an empirical analysis
Using panel data for a maximum of 109 countries over the years 1976-2000, we empirically analyze the impact of decentralization on the occurrence of transnational terror. Our results show that expenditure decentralization reduces the number of transnational terror events in a country, while political decentralization has no impact. These results are robust to the choice of control variables and method of estimation
Does government decentralization reduce domestic terror? An empirical test
Using a country panel of domestic terror attacks from 1998 to 2004, we empirically analyze the impact of government decentralization on terror. Our results show that expenditure decentralization reduces domestic terror, while political decentralization has no impact. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier B.V
Application of advanced notch stress approaches to assess fatigue strength of ship structural details: consolidation and dissemination of results
This report summarizes research activities carried out in compliance with the extension period of the research project proposed to and funded by the A. Von Humboldt Stiftung. Outline of the activities is reported in the work plan for the fifth period of exchange of the fellowship (extension) of the first author, at the beginning of the present report. Reference is made to previous reports describing activities of former periods.
Thereafter, activities are outlined as they were carried out during the stay in Hamburg of the first author.
Similarly to previous reports, this report is co-authored by Dipl.-Ing. Claas Fischer, actually Doktorand at TUHH and working on similar topics, as the reported research activities were carried out in strict cooperation
Application of advanced notch stress approaches to assess fatigue strength of ship structural details: benchmarks on complex geometries and laboratory tests
This report summarizes research activities carried out in compliance with Task #3, #4 and #5 of the research project proposed to and funded by the A. Von Humboldt Stiftung. Outline of the activities is reported in the work plan for the third period of exchange of the fellowship of the first author at the beginning of the present report, briefly summarizing the findings from the previous work and looking forward to future developments.
Thereafter, activities are outlined as they were carried out during the stay in Hamburg of the first author. Advices for future activities are also provided for both, numerical and experimental analyses. Updating of literature review about N-SIF based approaches is finally reported.
Similarly to a previous report, this report is co-authored by Dipl.-Ing. Claas Fischer, actually doktorand at TUHH and working on similar topics, as the reported research activities were carried out in strict cooperation
Application of advanced notch stress approaches to assess fatigue strength of ship structural details: analysis of tests and evaluation of approaches for complex geometries
This report summarizes research activities carried out in compliance with the extension period of the research project proposed to and funded by the A. Von Humboldt Stiftung. Outline of the activities is reported in the work plan for the fourth period of exchange of the fellowship (extension) of the first author, at the beginning of the present report.
Formal institutions and subjective well-being: Revisiting the cross-country evidence
A long tradition in economics explores the association between the quality of formal institutions and economic performance The literature on the relationship between such institutions and happiness is however rather limited and inconclusive In this paper we revisit the findings from recent cross-country studies on the institution-happiness association Our findings suggest that their conclusions are qualitatively rather insensitive to the specific measure of happiness used while the associations between formal institutions and subjective well-being differ among poor and rich countries Separating different types of institutional quality we find that in low-income countries the effects of economic-judicial institutions on happiness dominate those of political institutions while analyses restricted to middle- and high-income countries show strong support for an additional beneficial effect of political institutions Our results bear Important implications that we discuss in the concluding section of the paper (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserve
A new error bound result for Generalized Nash Equilibrium Problems and its algorithmic application
We present a new algorithm for the solution of Generalized Nash Equilibrium Problems. This hybrid method combines the robustness of a potential reduction algorithm and the local quadratic convergence rate of the LP-Newton method. We base our local convergence theory on a local error bound and provide a new sufficient condition for it to hold that is weaker than known ones. In particular, this condition implies neither local uniqueness of a solution nor strict complementarity. We also report promising numerical results. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York
