    An evaluation of a cluster of cases of reported skin cancer was performed at the Markland Lock and Dam facility (SIC-4441) Markland, Kentucky in March 1982. The survey was requested by the US Army Corps of Engineers because 7 of 16 employees were reported to have skin cancer. A medical questionnaire was given to 15 employees to obtain work, medical, and dermatological histories. A limited clinical examination of exposed areas of the skin was done. Histological records of workers with dermatological problems were traced. An inventory list of chemicals used at the facility was obtained and checked for substances known to cause skin cancer. No compounds linked to skin cancer were used more than once a year. Clinical examinations revealed the following dermatological conditions: benign mole, one case; actinic keratosis, two cases; basal cell carcinoma, one case. The author concludes that the skin conditions presented are the results of chronic sun exposure inherent with the job. The use of protective clothing and sunscreen ointments to reduce solar exposure is recommended

    Trend towards multiple authorship in occupational medicine journals

    Abstract Background There is an established trend towards an increasing number of authors per article in prestigious journals for medicine and health sciences. It is uncertain whether a similar trend occurs to the same extent in journals for specific medical specialties. Methods Journals focusing on occupational medicine were selected for analysis with regard to single or multiple-authorship per peer-reviewed paper. Data were collected from PubMed for publications between 1970 and 2007. These were analysed to calculate the average number of authors per multiple-author article per year and the percentage of single-author articles per year. The slope and average of these journals were then compared with that of previously studied non-occupational medicine journals. Results The results confirm a trend towards a linear increase in the average number of authors per article and a linear decrease in the percentage of single-author articles. The slope for the average number of authors for multiple-author articles was significantly higher in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine than in the other occupational medicine journals. Computational analysis of all articles published showed that Occupational Medicine (Oxford) had a significantly higher percentage of single-author articles than the other occupational medicine journals as well as major journals previously studied. Conclusion The same trend towards multiple authorship can be observed in medical specialty journals as in major journals for medicine and health sciences. There is a direct relationship between occupational journals with higher impact factors and a higher average number of authors per article in those journals.</p

    The effects of exposure to sulfur-dioxide (7446095) (SO2) were investigated on April 1 and 2, 1982 at Engineering Air Systems, Incorporated (SIC-348) in St. Louis, Missouri. The evaluation was requested by the Assistant Director of Safety and Health, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers, and Helpers following an industrial accident in which SO2 was released when a dip tank was cleaned. The company employed 150 production workers. Information about the accident and general work procedures was reviewed, and medical questionnaires were given to the 40 workers who were seen by physicians following the accident. SO2 was released when sodium-bisulfite (7631905) was added to a dip tank containing chromic-acid (7738945) solution to clean and desludge the tank. The 40 workers experienced cough, chest discomfort, throat irritation, and eye irritation. Review of the workers' medical records concerning the accident did not reveal any X-ray or pulmonary function abnormalities. The authors conclude that acute overexposure to SO2 did occur at the company, but no serious long term health effects are evident. They recommend work practice and engineering controls to prevent reoccurrence of accidents

    Environmental and breathing zone samples were analyzed for cutting oil mists, metal working fluids, and mineral spirits at Raytheon Missile Systems Divisions (SIC-3761), Bristol, Tennessee in July 1985. The evaluation was requested confidentially to investigate the occurrence of skin rashes in machine department employees. Ninety-four machine department employees and 26 comparisons from the shipping and receiving departments were given skin examinations and administered questionnaires. Bulk samples of used and unused oils were analyzed. Airborne oil mists and mineral spirits vapor were either not detected or below their relevant standards. Traces of arsenic (7440382) and zinc (7440666) were detected in bulk samples of used or unused cutting oil. Chlorocresol (59507) was found in a concentrate of Trim/Sol machine coolant. The prevalence of skin rash among employees exposed to cutting fluids was 36 percent, versus 12 percent in the comparisons. The skin rashes were primarily simple irritant dermatitis. The authors conclude that a health hazard exists resulting from combined effects of direct skin contact with cutting oils and fluids, solvents, and metal shavings. Recommendations include informing employees of possible skin problems associated with cutting fluids, reducing skin contact with cutting fluids, and wearing protective aprons and gloves
