" Unknown consequences of the chemical philosophy of Jean-Baptiste Van Helmont (1578-1644) in Central and East Europe. Panegyric of Van Helmont by the Rumanian scientist Demeter Cantemir (1701) At the end of the XVIIth century and in the beginning of the XVIIIth, the philosophical and chemical thought of Jean-Baptiste Van Helmont was alive in Central and East Europe, while its influence in West Europe was very attenuated. We know indeed that the helmontian doctrine was taught at the Greek Academy in Constantinople and that Demeter Cantemir (1673-1753), Rumanian historian, philosopher and scientist, who was educated at that school, was an enthusiastic disciple of Van Helmont. Cantemir planned to translate the works of the Belgian scientist into Rumanian. He edited in 1701 IOANNIS BAPTISTAE VAN HELMONT encomium in autorem et virtutem doctrinae eius, intended as a panegyric to the thought of the master. He is also the author of an important unpublished work I. B. Van Helmont, physices universalis doctrina, in which he explains the philosophical and iatrochemical ideas of Van Helmont.Todericiu Doru. DORU LIXANDRU Carol al II-lea, carlismul și carliștii în România anilor 1930 (Bucharest: Corint, 2023), 640 pp.

Among the various national projects that emerged in Romania throughout the twentieth century, invariably sharing a politically charged posthumous reception, the case of Carol II’s regime appears particularly contentious regarding both historiography and memory. Following decades of idiosyncratic representations, it is only fitting that a period of such consequence is revisited from a proper critical angle, precisely the undertaking of Doru Lixandru’s in the reviewed book. As a historian of Romania’s politicalmodernity, the author has a solid background in intellectual history, including a PhD in social sciences obtained at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Paris) and the University of Bucharest

Partially Supervised Approach in Signal Recognition

    No full text
The paper focuses on the potential of principal directions based approaches in signal classification and recognition. In probabilistic models, the classes are represented in terms of multivariate density functions, and an object coming from a certain class is modeled as a random vector whose repartition has the density function corresponding to this class. In cases when there is no statistical information concerning the set of density functions corresponding to the classes involved in the recognition process, usually estimates based on the information extracted from available data are used instead. In the proposed methodology, the characteristics of a class are given by a set of eigen vectors of the sample covariance matrix. The overall dissimilarity of an object X with a given class C is computed as the disturbance of the structure of C, when X is allotted to C. A series of tests concerning the behavior of the proposed recognition algorithm are reported in the final section of the paper.signal processing, classification, pattern recognition, compression/decompression

The classical labour theory of value and the future of American power

    No full text
In the present article the author makes an eloquent inquiry regarding the current economic and financial crisis and its relationship with the classical labour theory of value. The author realized a full synopsis about economical, social and military evolution of America after the Second World War until nowadays, stressing out the assertion that “the military power is depending on the economic one”. As a conclusion, the author presents some of the key actions and policies strongly needed for The United States in order to remain the preeminent superpower of the world in the 21st century

The concept liturgy after the Liturgy. History and theology

    No full text
In this critical paper, I will outline some remarks in connection with one of the most well-known concepts of Orthodox mission developed in the ecumenical framework. More precisely, this concept is summarized by the expression liturgy after the Liturgy. The structure of the present study and its aims are as follow. Because I already nominated the Orthodox theologian Ion Bria, I will shortly present his biography. I think that very often we write/read theology without connecting the author with his ideas. The second part of the paper will be focused on the historicalcontext of the modern ecumenical movement, context in which our theologian developed his ideas and promoted this concept of liturgy after the Liturgy. Secondly, I will explain how this concept came into existence. The most important aim in this section is to establish the author or authors of this concept. It is to be understood that the paternity of the idea is not clear, as such, I will go back to the sources in order to clarify this misunderstanding. The last but not least part of this study will be concerning the principal theological ideas of this typology of mission. In view of the historical elements I will outline some reflections in connection with this concept which can be used for our problems within the Churches. It is my inner belief that if we understand the idea of this expression of the liturgy after the Liturgy our missionary/pastoral activity will have a better application

    RF-ID technology and future’s hypermarkets

    No full text
The new RFID technology will be, perhaps, the substitute for the linear and 2D barcodes. This because RFID tags have some advantages like: the possibility to read their information from distance without errors, a greater resistance to counterfeiting, a greater capacity to store information. This article presents a solution proposed by the author for implementing this technology in a hypermarket.RF-ID technology; hypermarket; RF-ID tag
