    Primary Sample Space Path Guiding

    We present a scheme for unbiased path guiding. Different from existing methods that focus on constructing structures in spatial-directional domain, we work in primary sample space. We collect records containing a few dimensions of random numbers as well as the luminance that the resulting path contributes. A multiple dimensional structure is built with collected information. After this, random numbers are drawn from this structure and is used to feed the path tracer. Using this scheme, we are able to work completely outside the rendering kernel. We demonstrate that our method is practical and can be efficient.     Concentration in Knowledge Output: A case of Economics Journals

    This paper assesses the degree of author concentration in seven economics journals, which were published in India during 1990-2002. To measure the degree of author concentration, Lotka's Law was used. Moreover, we also make an exploratory analysis of the geographic, economics subfield and institutional concentration in 704 economics journals. An important finding of this paper is that specialized journals in the sample report the highest degree of author concentration. This result is quite similar to the findings by Cox and Chung (1991). Furthermore, there are several instances showing that the journals lean towards certain norms; this may affect the flow of innovative ideas into economics. We conclude that a knowledge activity, involving the high degree of concentration and a biased publication process, may affect the flow of new ideas into the discipline.Concentration, Lotka's Law

    Geometric Sample Reweighting for Monte Carlo Integration

    Numerical integration is fundamental in multiple Monte Carlo rendering problems. We present a sample reweighting scheme, including underlying theory, and analysis of numerical performance for the integration of an unknown one-dimensional function. Our method is simple to implement and builds upon the insight to link the weights to a function reconstruction process during integration. We provide proof that our solution is unbiased in one-dimensional cases and consistent in multi-dimensional cases.     Multiple transitions in rotating turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection

    Sharp transitions between potentially different turbulent states are unexpected because one might think that they should be washed out by the prevailing intense fluctuations and short coherence lengths and times. Contrary to this expectation, we found a sequence of such transitions in turbulent rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection as the rotation rate was increased. This phenomenon became most prominent at very large Rayleigh numbers up to 2 × 10^12 where the fluctuations are extremely vigorous. It was found in the heat transport as well as in the temperature gradient near the sample center. We conjecture that the transitions are between different large-scale structures which involve changes of symmetry and thus can not be gradual

    The recurring author: William Shakespeare, a case study through content analysis

    The recurring author is one whose works appear many times at different levels in instructional units found in literature textbook series. This study described the treatment of a recurring author, Shakespeare, using units in a sample of six literature textbook series student editions and teacher manuals for grades nine, ten, and twelve. The descriptive case study determined the content of the Shakespeare unit for each grade level in the sample and determined whether the content of the Shakespeare unit differed across grade levels in the sample.The William Shakespeare Unit Content Analysis Instrument was developed for this study to describe, to code, and to analyze the content of the Shakespeare units. The William Shakespeare Unit Content Analysis Instrument had a rated content validity of 91 percent and an inter-rater reliability of 92 percent.The study used percentages to describe the occurrence of items appearing in the Shakespeare units for grades nine, ten, and twelve in the six literature textbook series examined. The content of the Shakespeare unit was described based on these percentages. The study also determined that the content of the Shakespeare units across grades nine, ten, and twelve differed statistically but not substantially in the degree of emphasis placed on four areas of content: biographical information, Shakespeare's works, Shakespeare's theater, and issues related to instruction as measured by the William Shakespeare Unit Content Analysis Instrument.Recommendations for further study in the areas of recurring authors, teaching Shakespeare, and textbook evaluation criteria were given.Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 49-12, Section: A, page: 3645.Advisors: Lynn Z.
