    This is the first book to examine the work of Austin Clarke (1896-1974) in the light of modern critical and theoretical perspectives. Clarke was one of Ireland's major writers whose career was devoted as much to fiction, drama and autobiography as to poetry. The study assesses Clarke's work in its entirety but focuses on key works which reveal how resourcefully Clarke explored themes such as the coherence of the personality, the inner lives of women and the roots of repression

    Although Austin Clarke was born a hundred years ago many of the issues that appear in his work still trouble us. His compassionate response came from his own experience of restriction, as does his ongoing search for personal freedom, particularly from excessive clerical prohibition. Much of his work, in poetry, drama and fiction, wrestles with this issue, but there is also a lighter and more comic side to his imagination. His development took him from retellings of Irish saga to a commemoration of the Christian medieval period, to a deeply personal investigation of his religious anxieties, to confrontation with contemporary social and political issues, and, finally, to more joyous, sensual work.Bien qu'Austin Clarke soit né à la fin de l'autre siècle, bon nombre des questions qu'il soulève dans son œuvre nous concernent encore. Ses réactions pleines de compassion, comme sa quête de la liberté individuelle, étaient liées à sa propre expérience des contraintes et interdits, principalement ceux, excessifs, imposés par l'Église. Une grande partie de ses écrits, qu'il s'agisse de poésie, de théâtre ou de roman, illustre ce questionnement mais son imagination peut apporter à l'œuvre une tonalité plus légère et comique.     Austin Clarke wrote three versions of The Sword of the West. The 1921 version is marred by over-elaborate descriptions, syntactical complexities and verbal imprecision. The version in Collected Poems (1936) reduces the linguistic excesses in order to achieve clarity and exactness. Whole sections of the poem are omitted and within those retained there is considerable pruning. The revisions in Collected Poems (1974) are much more thorough and extensive. Clarke writes a new kind of poetry that has an energetic and illuminating use of language. Examples from the three versions are present in Collected Poems (1974).Austin Clarke écrivit trois versions de The Sword of the West. La version de 1921 souffre de longueurs dans les descriptions de complexité dans la syntaxe, et d'imprécision dans l'expression. La version contenue dans Collected Poems (1936), en éliminant les débordements verbaux, obtient clarté et justesse. Des morceaux entiers du poème sont omis, et les parties conservées font l'objet d'un élagage considérable. Les révisions que propose Collected Poems (1974) sont beaucoup plus radicales et beaucoup plus amples. Clarke renouvelle son écriture poétique, en utilisant une langue lumineuse et pleine de vigueur.
