Products lithographiques fabriquès par Auguste Vanhymbeeck

Unknown catalogue of an important Parisian manufacturer of special ink and paper for the exclusive use of lithography. Although the firm is now almost completely forgotten, in the late 19th-century it was recognized as one of the leading purveyors of lithographic paper and ink, as is attested by numerous contemporary reviews of their products: There are various papers for lithographic purposes, one of which, manufactured by Vanhymbeeck, is especially good. This [paper] is known as papier bristol chine, and may be had either smooth or with a very slight grain, the one for pen-drawing, the other for crayon work, though the pen may be used on the latter or the crayon on the former (SOURCE: Curtis Atherton, Some Masters of Lithography, 1896, p. 177). An article on Lithography in the 1902 Encyclopedia Britannica praises Vanhymbeeck's ink: The inks of Lemercier and Vanhymbeeck are generally considered as among the best. Lithographic chalk is made in the same manner as the ink, but requires to be burnt sufficiently hard for use in drawing. Excellent lithographic crayons are manufactured by Lemercier of Paris. They are made of several degrees of hardness, copal chalk, used for outlining, being the hardest. (Encyclopedia Britannica, Ninth Edition, 1882, p. 698). An article in W. D. Richmond's The Grammar of Lithography (1878, pp. 5-6) on Lithographic Ink: The manufacture of this important preparation will be described in due course, but at present it will be only necessary to mention that good ink may be bought from any dealer in lithographic materials. The inks of Lemercier and Vanhymbeeck have deservedly gained a high reputation; but there is, in the eyes of many artists, one drawback to their use on stone, and that is a deficiency of black. Concerning Lithographic Chalks, Or Crayons, and the same source states that Those [chalks] most generally used are manufactured by Lemercier, of Paris, and are so well known that every printer experienced in chalk-drawings knows how to treat a subject in which they have been used. They are made of several degrees of hardness. -- vendor's descriptio
