Do psychiatric departments in general hospitals have an impact on the physical health of mental patients?

    No full text
Purpose of review Recent literature has increased awareness of the physical health problems that affect mental-health patients. The close association of psychiatric departments with other medical departments can lead to improved communication and support between all medical specialties. This review assesses the impact these developments have on the physical health of individuals with psychiatric disorders. Recent findings The current literature shows that mentally ill individuals have increased physical illness comorbidity. They do not regularly attend screening programmes or follow-up appointments. They also have an increased incidence of unwanted events while hospitalized. These disturbing findings cannot be wholly explained by lifestyle factors and antipsychotic medication and it seems that stigma against mental illness has an effect as well. Summary No evidence has emerged that the medical screening of psychiatric patients has improved overall. Psychiatrists may be coming more sensitive to the fact that their patients need close monitoring, not only of their mental state but also their blood pressure, sugar glucose and weight. Sensitizing clinicians to the needs of psychiatric patients is a slow procedure. There is a great need for studies on specific interventions aimed at specific medical conditions that coexist more frequently with psychiatric disorders

Background: The prevalence of burnout syndrome among medical students is a growing concern, warranting comprehensive exploration, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. This review aims to elucidate the burnout phenomenon, considering its impact on medical students\u27 mental health, physical well-being, and academic performance. Methods: A thorough analysis was conducted, drawing on data from 31 studies encompassing over 37,000 participants in 25 countries. A systematic search across PubMed, Google Scholar, APA PsycNET, and Scopus utilized specific keyword combinations related to COVID-19, medical students, and burnout syndrome. The selected studies were evaluated to ensure relevance to the research aim. Results: The review reveals burnout complexity, highlighting its diverse manifestations, exacerbated by the pandemic. Varied outcomes emerged from the studies, reflecting contrasting impacts on students. During lockdown, some reported having spent quality time with their families and delved into their academic interests, while others suffered due to the absence of clinical engagement. A notable correlation between burnout levels and academic year was observed, though interpretations differed among studies. Factors such as gender, family status, coping mechanisms, and the absence or presence of a supportive network were identified as influencers of burnout likelihood. Conclusion: Medical student burnout persists as a significant challenge, intensified by pandemic disruptions to academic and clinical experiences. Urgent proactive measures by academic institutions are crucial to safeguard future physicians\u27 well-being, with implications for enhancing healthcare delivery. This study underscores the immediate need to prioritize strategies for burnout prevention and management in medical education

Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Greek Personality Psychopathology Inventory (GPPI-5) An ESEM Application Approach Following the DSM-5 AMPD

    No full text
The 5th version of DSM (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) employed a dimensional approach to describe and assess personality disorders, namely, the alternative model of personality disorders (AMPD). So far, AMPD has been translated and validated in many countries. Herein, the results of a series of studies conducted to develop and validate the Greek Personality Psychopathology Inventory (GPPI-5) following the AMPD are reported. Data from more than 1,200 adults were analyzed to examine factor structure. The ESEM approach was applied (1) to examine the proposed personality model, (2) to confirm previous validity studies on AMPD, and (3) to examine the invariance of GPPI-5 across gender. Results successfully replicated the AMPD at both the domain and facet levels. Measurement invariance across gender supported the GPPI-5 structure. Reliability and validity studies were conducted, providing evidence that GPPI-5 is a valid and psychometrically sound measure for assessing personality disorders in clinical and research settings. © 2023 The Author(s)

A Systematic Literature Review on the Application of Telepsychiatry in Correctional Facilities/Prisons: Necessity and Modern Challenges

Mental health disorders are more prevalent among incarcerated people than in the general population, while the difficulties experienced by inmates in gaining access to mental health services often make their care and treatment inadequate. To systematically review the use of video-teleconferencing (VTC) and telepsychiatry in forensic settings and its application within the criminal justice system. The electronic bibliographic databases MEDLINE, Scopus, PsychINFO and Google Scholar were searched using a systematic approach from January 1998 until September 2021 to identify papers on the use of VTC and telepsychiatry in forensic settings and within the criminal justice system. A total of 1303 articles were identified, after screening 27 publications fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Studies identified strengths and weaknesses of the use of telepsychiatry in forensic settings and criminal justice system. Telepsychiatry in forensic settings and the criminal justice system is associated with more benefits than limitations. Strengths identified include access to specialized services, flexibility in rescheduling meetings, security and safety among all parties involved, acceptance and user satisfaction, as well as efficiency and effectiveness of services provided, cost and time savings, and the absence of risks for infection spread in correctional settings. Weaknesses identified include the reluctance of professionals to provide remote consultations, the quality of the therapeutic relationship established, restrictions on its use by special patient groups, as well as issues underlying its implementation such as the legal framework, ethical issues and the civil or criminal responsibility of health attitudes. Overall, there is evidence to support its use and acceptance within forensic settings and the criminal justice system and our review highlights its benefits and limitations. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023
