    Conservation in an Islamic context a case study of Makkah

    No full text
    The Holy Qu’ rān contains many injunctions for Muslims to respect and conserve the natural environment but few address the built environment. Habitat at the time of the Prophet (PBOH) was in the vernacular and relatively impermanent. The first habitat was the cave, the second the tent and then simple flat roofed buildings of post and lintel construction made of mud and rubble. Later buildings were not indigenous but reflected the architectural styles and techniques of Muslim pilgrims from beyond the Arabian Peninsula. Permanent exotic buildings were later erected as reminders of holy places and events. This work advances a case to restore and preserve historic and religious sites in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. Makkah is the destination for millions of Muslim pilgrims who annually pay homage to Allah during the occasions of Hajj, Ramadan and Umra. The tranquillity and peaceful ambience that one associates with the holiest of Islamic experiences have, over the years, given way to jostling crowds of people who must be expediently housed, fed, transported, and protected. Due to the lack of planning and the insensitive but profitable development of the city, Makkah is in grave danger of becoming a bustling metropolis instead of a sanctuary where pilgrims gather to perform their religious rites and reaffirm their dedication to Allah. The author calls for professional planning and international cooperation to guide future development for this expanding and sensitive area. The author's ideas are grounded in practical and aesthetic study, therefore, the political, environmental and economic issues are examined in relationship to religious, historic and artistic values. The author makes proposals for a future Makkah that would provide pilgrims with the physical comforts, security, and serene environment they deserve—without destroying the city they came to visit. The author discusses preservation and conservation in the western world and the need for their acceptance in Muslim countries, the former being an aesthetic and intellectual concept sustained by law and the latter being the prescribed free expression of the individual unhindered by material considerations. Both worlds are rapidly being overwhelmed by materialism, but body, mind and spirit combine in making us aware of our surroundings and the way in what we see around us has come into being

    Mucocutaneous Pseudoepitheliomatous Hyperplasia

    ABSTRACT: Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, also called pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia because of its resemblance to well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, is a reactive epithelial proliferation that is characterized by prominent irregular hyperplasia of the epithelium with tongue-like epithelial projections into the dermis. This reactive pattern may involve cutaneous or mucosal surfaces and has been described in association with a wide variety of stimuli including infectious, neoplastic, inflammatory, and traumatic among others. In this review, we will discuss the pathophysiology of pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, the histopathological findings that are helpful in its differentiation from squamous cell carcinoma, and the spectrum of conditions that may show this unique feature on microscopic examination. © 2012 Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Inc.Abbas O, 2010, J CUTAN PATHOL, V37, P1032, DOI 10.1111-j.1600-0560.2010.01575.x; Lateral Control of an Unmaned Car Using GNSS Positionning in the Context of Connected Vehicles

    No full text
    AbstractThis paper addresses the problem of path following for unmaned cars using only GNSS positionning. Several papers have already addressed the lane keeping, usually restricting the focus to the computation of the optimal steering wheel angle, therefore usually offering a good solution in either straight lines or curves, but rarely both. Moreover the GNSS receiver have a sampling time higher than the required one for the proposed strategies in the literature. In this paper, a control algorithm is proposed for the steering wheel angle, with adaptation of the speed of the car, in order to provide a solution working both for straight lines and curves by using only GNSS. The presented solution has been used in real conditions to realize the demonstration “speed synchronization at intersections using intervehicular communication, x.icars” shown at the Intelligent Transportation System World Congress in Bordeaux, 201511https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBx6qks8kCI

It evaluates these subjects through linguistic, grammatical and historical information and lights the way for the studies of Arab Language and Literature. The purpose of the present study was to provide detailed information about the work ?el-Muberred ve el-Kâmil fi?l-Edeb? because of insufficient information about this work. The study consists of introduction part, two parts and conclusion part. In the introduction part, general information is given about the period that Ebu?l- Abbas el-Muberred lived in. In the first part, information is given about the life of Ebu?l-Abbas el-Muberred, his teachers, his students, his works, his scientific personality, his political and cultural environment that he lived in, his opinions about rhetoric and his position among scholars of rhetoric. In the second part, the general features of the author?s book ?el-Kâmil fi?l-Edeb?, its method, its importance, its literary views, its content, its important subjects and the studies made upon the book are investigated. Girişte Ebu'l-Abbâs el- Muberred'in yaşadığı dönem hakkında genel bilgiler verilmiştir. Birinci bölümde, Ebu'l-Abbâs el-Muberred'in hayatı, ders aldığı hocaları, öğrencileri, eserleri, ilmû kişiliği, içinde yaşadığı siyasi ve kültürel çevre, belagatla ilgili görüşleri ve belagat âlimleri içindeki konumu ele alınmıştır. İkinci bölümde de, yazarın el-Kâmil fi'l-Edeb adlı kitabının genel özellikleri, metodu, önemi, edebi yönü, içeriği, ele aldığı önemli konular ve üzerinde yapılan çalışmalar incelenmiştir

    السينما الصوفية والشعر الفيلمي عند عباس كيارستمي / Sufi Cinema and Filmic Poetry in Abbas Kiarostami’s Work

    No full text
This article identifies three aspects of Abbas Kiarostami\u27s poetics in his poems and films. First, it traces the intersection of rhetorical devices in his poetry and films. Second, the article analyzes some of his films which mobilize poetic techniques. Third, the author shows the presence of mystic Sufi themes intersecting poetry, cinema, and spirituality: specifically, filming what is impossible to see. Relying on textual analysis of Kiarostami\u27s poems in Walking With the Wind and Ghazaliyyat Hafez al-Shirazi, the article analyzes specific scenes from three of his most renowned films: Where is the Friend\u27s Home?, Taste of Cherry, and The Wind Will Carry Us.

    Cutaneous metastasis: Clinicopathological study of 72 patients from a tertiary care center in Lebanon

    No full text
    Background Cutaneous metastasis is the result of malignant cell spread from primary malignancy to the skin. This is not uncommon, and rates reported in the literature are as high as 10.4percent. To the best of our knowledge, there are no studies assessing the epidemiologic, clinical, and histopathological features of cutaneous metastasis in our region. Objective To assess the clinical and histopathological findings of all patients diagnosed with cutaneous metastasis at the American University of Beirut - Medical Center (AUB-MC) and to compare our findings with those published in the literature. Methods Retrospective clinical and histopathologic evaluation of all cases diagnosed as cutaneous metastasis at AUB-MC between 1992 and 2010. Results A total of 72 patients (50 females and 22 males) were identified. The mean age at diagnosis was 55.2years. The most common primary cancer was breast cancer in women and laryngeal cancer in men. The most common clinical presentation was a single nodule in 27percent of cases followed by multiple nodules in 23percent. Cutaneous metastasis lesions were asymptomatic in the majority. The chest was the most commonly affected site. On microscopy, the majority of metastatic cases were adenocarcinomas (74percent). Conclusion This is, to our knowledge, the first study characterizing the epidemiological, clinical, and histopathological features of cutaneous metastasis in the Lebanese population. The clinical and histopathological features observed were in concordance with the published literature, with minor differences. © 2013 The International Society of Dermatology.Abbas O, 2011, HISTOPATHOLOGY, V58, P643, DOI 10.1111-j.1365-2559.2010.03617.x; Abbas O, 2010, J CUTAN PATHOL, V37, pE53, DOI 10.1111-j.1600-0560.2009.01357.x; BROWNSTE.MH, 1972, ARCH DERMATOL, V105, P862, DOI 10.1001-archderm.105.6.862; Coman I, 2007, J GASTROINTEST LIVER, V16, P333; Conti JA, 2008, CLIN CANCER RES, V14, P6405, DOI 10.1158-1078-0432.CCR-08-0816; Fernandez-Flores A, 2010, AM J DERMATOPATH, V32, P222, DOI 10.1097-DAD.0b013e3181b348f8; Fukuda H, 2006, J DERMATOL, V33, P46, DOI 10.1111-j.1346-8138.2006.00009.x; Hu SCS, 2009, J AM ACAD DERMATOL, V60, P379, DOI 10.1016-j.jaad.2008.10.007; Hu SS, 2008, J EUR ACAD DERMATOL, V22, P735, DOI 10.1111-j.1468-3083.2008.02590.x; Hussein MRA, 2010, J CUTAN PATHOL, V37, pE1, DOI 10.1111-j.1600-0560.2009.01469.x; Jemal A, 2002, CA-CANCER J CLIN, V52, P23; Kleyn CE, 2006, AM J CLIN DERMATOL, V7, P71, DOI 10.2165-00128071-200607020-00001; Koga S, 2000, ANTICANCER RES, V20, P1939; Koperek O, 2008, HISTOPATHOLOGY, V52, P623, DOI 10.1111-j.1365-2559.2008.03002.x; Krathen RA, 2003, SOUTH MED J, V96, P164, DOI 10.1097-01.SMJ.0000053676.73249.E5; LOOKINGBILL DP, 1993, J AM ACAD DERMATOL, V29, P228; LOOKINGBILL DP, 1990, J AM ACAD DERMATOL, V22, P19, DOI 10.1016-0190-9622(90)70002-Y; Luh JY, 2002, AM J CLIN ONCOL-CANC, V25, P160, DOI 10.1097-00000421-200204000-00011; Mordenti C, 2000, ACTA DERM-VENEREOL, V9, P143; Nashan D, 2009, J CANCER RES CLIN, V135, P1, DOI 10.1007-s00432-008-0432-0; Saeed S, 2004, J CUTAN PATHOL, V31, P419, DOI 10.1111-j.0303-6987.2004.00207.x; SPENCER PS, 1987, CUTIS, V39, P119; Stanko C, 2007, AM J DERMATOPATH, V29, P290, DOI 10.1097-DAD.0b013e318057f0fb; SWANSON PE, 1991, AM J SURG PATHOL, V15, P835, DOI 10.1097-00000478-199109000-000031

    Elastophagocytosis: Underlying mechanisms and associated cutaneous entities

    No full text
    Elastophagocytosis is the phagocytosis of elastic fibers that can microscopically be seen in the cytoplasm of histiocytes, multinucleated giant cells, or both. Generally believed to be a characteristic feature of certain granulomatous disorders such as annular elastolytic giant cell granuloma or elastolytic disorders such as mid-dermal elastolysis, this feature has also been described in other cutaneous inflammatory conditions, cutaneous malignancies, infectious entities, and secondary to certain medications. The list of diseases that can exhibit this peculiar finding on histopathology is long. In this review we attempt to shed light on the available literature concerning the pathogenesis of this phenomenon and the plethora of skin conditions that exhibit elastophagocytosis. © 2014 by the American Academy of Dermatology, Inc.Abbas O, 2010, J CUTAN PATHOL, V37, P1032, DOI 10.1111-j.1600-0560.2010.01575.x; Al-Hoqail IA, 2002, AM J DERMATOPATH, V24, P209, DOI 10.1097-01.DAD.0000014668.05924.4C; Alvarez-Ruiz S, 2004, J EUR ACAD DERMATOL, V18, P310, DOI 10.1111-j.1468-3083.2004.00872.x; Baldwin AK, 2013, EXPERT REV MOL MED, V15, DOI 10.1017-erm.2013.9; Ball NJ, 2004, J CUTAN PATHOL, V31, P160, DOI 10.1111-j.0303-6987.2004.00157.x; Bannister M J, 2001, Australas J Dermatol, V42, P50, DOI 10.1046-j.1440-0960.2001.00474.x; Barbosa Jr Aryon de Almeida, 2002, An. A review of Parry-Romberg syndrome

    No full text
    Parry-Romberg syndrome, also known as progressive hemifacial atrophy, is a rare disorder characterized by unilateral facial atrophy affecting the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscles, and sometimes extending to the osteocartilaginous structures. It has been associated with various systemic manifestations, particularly neurologic, ophthalmologic and maxillofacial. In this article, we review Parry-Romberg syndrome with its associated findings (neurologic, ophthalmologic, cardiac, rheumatologic, endocrinologic, infectious, orthodontic and maxillofacial, and autoimmune), underlying cause, differential diagnoses (en coup de sabre, scleroderma, and Rasmussen encephalitis), and therapeutic options.ABELE DC, 1990, J AM ACAD DERMATOL, V23, P401, DOI 10.1016-0190-9622(90)70233-8;
