    Delving into the successes and failures of stack exchange communities

    In this day and age, the Internet has become an integral part of our lives. Question and answer (Q&A) networks like Stack Exchange have grown to become major sources of knowledge on the Internet. On the Internet, users devote time into looking for answers to questions they have. Sometimes, these users are able to find these answers and other times they do not, thus wasting their time. If these Q&A networks become more successful, there would be higher chances for these users to find answers to their questions since there will be more information on the Internet. The aim of this study is to understand what factor(s) cause a network to be a success or a failure, therefore, improving the network. In this study, we have analyzed data from such Q&A networks, Stack Exchanges. Through data analysis, we have found a factor that causes most of these networks to become successful. Applying the insights that we obtained, we built a model to group the Stack Exchange groups to successful and unsuccessful networks. Our model has achieved over 71% accuracy in predicting Stack Exchange groups’ success that are at least a year old. These results provide insights on how useful these factors are in determining the success of a Q&A network.     Drivers to mitigate climate change in context of manufacturing industry: An emerging economy study

    Business strategy and the environment are becoming increasingly central within the global agenda. In particular, some emerging countries such as India show strong growth in the manufacturing sector while also exhibiting high emission values. This inevitably creates a paradox. Therefore, this study aims to determine the drivers for Indian manufacturing firms to pursue sustainability. The methodologies used in this work is comprised of modified total interpretive structure modeling (m-TISM) that is based on 21 drivers to mitigate climate change and cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (MICMAC) that evaluates the dependence power and driving power of the drivers. The findings from the study reflect that there are nine levels into which the clusters are divided. “greenhouse gas performance” and “encouraging low carbon products” are influenced by all other drivers, while the driver “dynamic transitions in economic and political situation” occupies a mirror position. This last driver has the greatest impact on the achievement of the goal along with “persistent with corporate conventionalities” and “dynamic transitions in economic and political situation.” The economic dimension has a key asset in the manufacturing context, but the influence of sustainable technology on the supply side and of the responsible consumption on the demand side cannot be overlooked. Businesses that focus on short-term maximization by not focusing on renewable and circular resources may be uncompetitive in the long-term

    Addressing the Challenges to Sustainable Initiatives in Value Chain Flexibility: Implications for Sustainable Development Goals

    AbstractThe value chain refers to the source of competition to facilitate organizations to maximize and sustain value for their consumers. Value chain flexibility is necessary to build sustainable initiatives in addressing ambiguity. In the literature, there is a lack of framework to highlight the challenges to sustainable initiatives in value chain flexibility. This study fills this research gap by suggesting a framework for challenges to sustainable initiatives in value chain flexibility. In this study, thirteen potential challenges to sustainable initiatives in value chain flexibility are identified and an integrated model is developed. It adopts the modified Total Interpretive Structure Model and the Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification methodology. The mixed approach is used as the modified Total Interpretive Structure Model organizes the binary interactions among the challenges, while Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification analysis organizes specific precise assessments of the driving power and dependence of the challenges. The results of the study reflect that (i) lack of supplier commitment to sustainable products and (ii) lack of knowledge toward sustainability in value chains are the challenges that achieved the highest driving power. The challenge ‘inadequate communication among the suppliers in the value chain’ is at the highest level in the analysis. The proposed framework could help government and non-government bodies to formulate policies to efficiently address challenges to sustainable initiatives in value chain flexibility.</jats:p

    Technological innovation toward sustainability in manufacturing organizations: A circular economy perspective

    Technological innovation has been widely recognized both as a trigger and catalyzer towards sustainability. However, hardly ever manufacturing companies are ready and mature enough to employ technological innovations in their processes and business. Given the relevance of technological innovation in pursuing sustainability, it is hard to comprehend what are the prominent factors affecting the role of technological innovation to address sustainability and prioritize them. Therefore, the prime purpose of this study, applied to an emerging economy, is to analyze the contributions of technological innovation toward sustainability in manufacturing organizations with a circular economy (CE) perspective. To address this objective, a questionnaire has been developed and conducted, also using the Grey VIKOR method and a sensitivity analysis. The findings from the study illustrate that entrepreneurship direction towards innovation and market direction towards innovation are the two potential factors of technological innovation towards sustainability. The implications highlight that CE, sustainable education and stakeholder engagement solutions can be crucial to the competitiveness of a developing country's manufacturing businesses

    The benefits of growth for Indonesian Workers

    Indonesia's adopted development model has proved to be the most successful in alleviating poverty and benefiting workers in developing countries. The government's development efforts focused on agriculture, education, and transport infrastructure. It emphasized providing productive employment opportunities and gradually improving the labor quality through education and training. The wage, employment, and income growth rates were left to market forces. Although the rapid growth of labor-intensive manufacturing has led to more jobs and higher wages benefiting workers, workers employed in these industries have expressed growing dissatisfaction. They complain about problems of child labor, the denial of centrally mandated wages and benefits to workers, poor working conditions, and the abuse of young female workers. The government has tried to improve worker's wages and working conditions by centrally mandating higher labor standards, relying principally on minimum wages. Enforcement has improved and, despite low compliance, minimum wages are beginning to bite. Indonesians are debating whether they need labor intensive industries and whether it is a mistake to base Indonesia's growth on cheap labor. They argue that if labor is more expensive, manufacturers must substitute some capital for labor. However, if labor-intensive industries are rejected, the capacity of the economy to absorb plentiful workers will be reduced. The main alternatives are to push up wages now, or to let wages be determined by market forces and strengthen institutions that could improve working conditions, such as labor unions.     Endogenous erythroid colony (EEC) syndrome comprise of three cardinal features, i.e. ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia and cleft lip. EEC itself has three different forms. Ectrodactyly (absence of one or more digits) can be present with clefting in the proximal portion of hand or foot known as split hand foot malformation (SHFM) or lobster claw deformity.     Efficient inference of convolutional neural networks on general purpose hardware using weight repetition

    Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) have begun to permeate all corners of electronic society due to their high accuracy and machine efficiency per operation. Recent work has shown how weights within and across DNN filters have large degrees of repetition due to the pigeonhole principle and modern weight quantization schemes, and that this weight repetition can be harnessed improve DNN inference efficiency in an accelerator/ASIC context. This thesis develops new techniques so that weight repetition leads to an efficiency gain on general-purpose and programmable SIMD-based architectures such as CPUs equipped with vector extensions. We show how to write high-performance software that does not require hardware modifications and can cope with the irregularity introduced by weight repetition schemes.     Role of Risk Stratification and Genetics in Sudden Cardiac Death

    Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a major public health issue due to its increasing incidence in the general population and the difficulty in identifying high-risk individuals. Nearly 300,000-350,000 patients in the United States and 4- to 5 million patients in the world die from SCD. Coronary artery disease and advanced heart failure are the main etiology for SCD. Ischemia of any cause precipitates lethal arrhythmias, and ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation are the most common lethal arrhythmias precipitating SCD. Pulse-less electrical activity, brady-arrhythmia and electromechanical dissociation also result in SCD. Most sudden cardiac deaths occur out-of-the-hospital setting, so it is difficult to estimate the public burden, which results in overestimating the incidence of SCD. The insufficiency and limited predictive value of various indicators and criteria for SCD result in the increasing incidences. As a result, there is a need to develop better risk stratification criteria and find modifiable variables to decrease the incidence. Primary and secondary prevention and treatment of SCD need further research.
