Liquidity risks
Recent credit crises have demonstrated that liquidity is a fundamental cause of economic shocks, say Anthony Asher, Simon Webb and Andrew Doughman, who suggest that actuaries can play a vital role in finding solutions for liquidity risk. This is an edited extract of a paper that was prepared for the Institute of Actuaries of Australias (Institute) 4th Financial Services Forum 2008
The Diagnosis and Management of Malignant Gliomas
iv, 59 p.The treatment of malignant gliomas remains one of the great challenges in
clinical medicine. The most aggressive form of malignant glioma is glioblastoma
multiforme (GBM), which is also the most prevalent primary central nervous system
tumor. Many investigator initiated studies related to the treatment of malignant gliomas
are currently underway in this country and throughout the world. One organization
conducting such research is Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates in Charlotte,
North Carolina, the nation's largest community-based neurosurgical group. Dr. Anthony
L. Asher, MD, FACS directs a research staff at CNSA that is presently involved in
numerous clinical trials related to brain tumors and other neurosurgical disorders. During
a ten-week internship under the guidance of Dr. Asher, I became involved in an ongoing
investigator initiated study designed to assess the efficacy of a combination of therapies
in the treatment of malignant gliomas. This study used temozolomide as a neoadjuvant
treatment with chemo-radiotherapy and Gliadel ® (BCNU) wafers. In addition to
assisting with data collection related to this study, I was involved in other activities
during this experience including independent research, observation during procedures,
and participation in patient care conferences. What follows is a summary of malignant
gliomas treatment options associated with these tumors, an overview of clinical trials and
a detailed description of the protocol, Temozolomide as Neoadiuvant and Chemoradiotherapy
Following Resection and GLIADEL® Wafer Placement in Patients with
Newly Diagnosed High-grade Glioma. Additional concepts that were explored during
this internship, in addition to and other work-related experiences, are detailed in the SIP
journal.Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates. Charlotte, North Carolina
Prospective Clinical Trials
ii, 50 p.Properly designed and executed clinical trials are the best-known mechanism by
which the safety and efficacy of new treatments and competing strategies can be
evaluated. In the United States, numerous individuals and institutions are involved in the
design and implementation of clinical trials. Although much of clinical research is
performed in traditional academic settings, a significant amount of research is now being
conducted through community-based medical centers. Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine
Associates (CNSA) is one of the nation's largest community-based neurosurgical groups.
The physicians of CNSA conduct a variety of clinical trials related to neurosurgical
diseases and a number of those trials were active during a ten week internship under the
guidance of Anthony L. Asher MD F.A.C.S. One of the group's most complex trials
involves the administration of a recombinant immunotoxin known as hIL13-PE38QQR
(IL-13 PE) to brain tumor patients. IL13-PE has been shown to possess specific anti-tumor
activity against a variety of cell lines, including malignant primary brain tumors.
This protocol, like other research studies involving human subjects, is conducted
according strict moral and ethical principles defined over the last 60 years by
international convention. While working under Dr. Asher, an intimate understanding of
the basic aspects of clinical research was established. The following composition is
intended to provide a summary of the most essential concepts assimilated during this
internship. Specifically, an outline of the basic scientific, regulatory and ethical principles
that currently guide clinical research efforts is presented here. Additionally, a summary of
the IL-13 protocol is offered as a practical example of how research studies are
implemented.Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates. Charlotte, North Carolina

Interview with Anthony F. Janson
Anthony F. Janson is a retired professor and former Department Chair for the UNCW Department of Art and Theatre [retired December 2002]. This interview covers his complete life and career. He discusses his relationship with his art historian father, H.W. Janson, including his relationship as son and co-author and editor of the Janson texts on art history. The interview covers Tony's career as a scholar, book editor, author, art museum curator [at Indianapolis Art Museum and North Carolina Art Museum], and as a professor. Throughout, he comments on important artists in history and his philosophy of art history. He also includes stories of his time in the Vietnam War
