Potential Weights from Tepe Yahya and the Mina of Jiroft
The new weighing evidence on the Iranian plateau from Shahr-i Sokhta and Konar Sandal opens up new scenarios on the socio-economic complexities of the major centers of the Iranian Early Bronze Age and, in the same way, allows for deeper reflections on the interactive and integrative dynamics among complex societies of the third millennium BC. The presence of new balance weights from Tepe Yahya fits well into a historical framework that is gradually restoring a central role to the major centers of the Iranian plateau, no longer seen as a simple link between Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley.
This paper presents a batch of weights and potential weights from C.C. Lamberg-Karlovsky’s excavations at Tepe Yahya and, in addition, will try to demonstrate the weighing function of the so-called steatite/chlorite ‘hand-bags’ produced along the Halil river valley by identifying local and foreign weight systems (primarily from Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley) in the Jiroft cultural complex
