from pediococcus pentosaceus isolated from Kurdai
Kurdai is a traditional fermented whole wheat snack food, native to Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat. The microbes responsible for kurdai fermentation have been successfully isolated and identified as Leuconostoc lactis, Pedicoccus pentosaceus, Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus hominis, Klebsiella pneumonia and Lactobacillus plantarum. Pedicoccus pentosaceus one of microbes responsible for kurdai fermentation were identified. In the present work, Pedicoccus pentosaceus was explored for the production of pediocin which is a Class II bacteriocin produced by lactic acid bacteria, because they are heat stable and non-modified lantibiotics. Bacteriocins have been drawing the attention of the food industry because of their increased specificity and effectiveness at low concentrations in order to prevent the development of pathogens. The activity of pediocin was evaluated using various commercial strains as indicators such as Escherichia coli MTCC 40, Bacillus cereus MTCC 1272, Leuconostoc mesenteroides NCIM 2198, Lactobacillus fermentum NCIM 2165 and Lactobacillus helveticus NCIM 2733. It was shown that the highest pediocin activity was expressed against Lactobacillus helveticus NCIM 2733 with 4.89 + 0.13 Activity Units (AU)/mL being produced. Pediocin production was then optimized by controlling the incubation time, temperature seed age, inoculum density and initial pH of the growth media.Fil: Pavitra, Krishna Kumar. Universal Oneness as the Ulterior Motive of the Incarnation of Radha and Krishna
My Affair with Radha, the debut work of Kunal Desai is the dedication to his readers who firmly believe in the divine couple Radha and Krishna. The intention of the author was to spread the awareness of the significance of divine love to the world through the example of Radha and Krishna who remain to be the epitome of transcendental oneness. The human life that has been influenced in multiple ways throughout the life time, fails to overcome the temptations and eventually ends up in misery. A solution to all the misery in the world is to experience the feeling of oneness from within, which uplifts the individual from selfishness to selflessness and eventually the individual feels empathy towards all things. A world with such human beings with the feeling of oneness, will obviously be in harmony and without any miseries.

The economic effects of minimum import prices : with an application to Uruguay
By increasing the costs of imports, minimum unit import reference prices not only generate the usual distortions one expects from tariff protection but add new ones that a pure tariff system would not generate. Reference prices substantially reduce the price gap between imports with prices above and below the reference price. By making cheap imports relatively more expensive than expensive imports, reference prices affect quality in three ways that appear not to have been analyzed before: 1) they can induce foreign firms to shift toward more expensive exports to the country with reference prices; 2) they can induce domestic producers in that country to shift production toward lower-quality, cheaper goods; and 3) because this decreases the relative price of the expensive varieties, domestic consumers may lean toward buying more expensive goods. Using the case of Uruguay, the authors estimate what protection the reference price procedures provide for Uruguayan industries and analyze how this protection affects Uruguay's economy. The authors show that the reference and minimum export price procedures impose floor prices on imports that cover more than a third of value added in Uruguayan manufacturing. These systems jeopardize trade liberalization efforts by creating the impression that tariff cuts are greater than they really are. These systems also create massive distortions between the relative domestic prices of imported goods above and below the floor prices.Environmental Economics&Policies,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Economic Theory&Research,Markets and Market Access,Access to Markets
Performance assessment using remote sensing
Presented at Irrigated agriculture responds to water use challenges - strategies for success: USCID water management conference held on April 3-6, 2012 in Austin, Texas. The Krishna delta irrigation system, one of the earliest major irrigation projects in southern India was designed by Sir Arthur Cotton during in the middle of 19th century on river Krishna near Vijayawada. The project irrigates an ayacut of 5.14 lakh hectares covering West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh. Using multi-date satellite data of Krishna Western Delta (KWD), flow information, crop cutting experiment (CCE) plot data of the State Department of Agriculture (SDA) and AP Water Management (APWAM) Project obtained during kharif 2005-06, performance indicators were computed and performance of irrigation system was assessed. Paddy was the major crop gown in KWD. Hence paddy yield model was developed using ground obtained CCE plot yield data and satellite derived normalized difference vegetative index (NDVI). Very good correlation (r = 0.7) was obtained between these parameters. Hence, it was extrapolated to the entire KWD belt. The average yield of KWD derived based on NDVI observations was closely matched with the yield data of APWAM and SDA. Highest efficiency (85%) was obtained in high-level canal command. The lower efficiency obtained in Kommamur was due to poor condition of the canal, high conveyance losses and release of excess rain water in to the sea through the canal. The productivity of water was varying from 0.7 to 1.0 kg m-3 across KWD except in Kommamur which had only 0.5 kg m-3. The information on nature, extent and distribution of salt affected soils and waterlogged areas in KWD was generated based on visual interpretation of FCC imageries obtained from space-borne remote sensing satellites. It was computed that about 18,102 and 4,675 hectares of area was salt affected and waterlogged, respectively
Rent-sharing in the multi-fibre arrangement : the case of Mexico
The author investigates market power and the distribution of rents in the market for Mexico's exports of apparel tothe United States under the Multi - Fibre Arrangement (MFA). Conventional wisdom holds that voluntary restraints, such as those under the MFA, are superior to other kinds of trade barriers because they allow developing countries to receive the scarcity rents from quantity restriction. Recently a number of studies have questioned this orthodoxy. Erzan, Krishna, and Tan (1991), in particular, have pointed out that if market power exists only on the side of the importers, they can acquire some of the fixed rents resulting from quotas, in a form of"rent-sharing". In Mexico's case, rents resulting from MFA restrictions are probably small, since few of the quotas imposed are binding. And other institutional arrangements - such as production sharing under HTS 9802 and a liberal quota regime for goods made with U.S. inputs - further mitigate the MFA's restrictiveness. Mexican exporters probably receive only a fraction of available rents, says the author. The welfare implications of MFA restrictions, and of market imperfections that might lead to rent-sharing, are thus not as significant in Mexico as they might be in countries for which conditions are more restrictive. But even for the few rents generated in Mexico's case, some rent-sharing is taking place. The author tests the existence of perfect markets and rent-sharing for six groups of Mexican apparel exports to the United States between 1981 and 1990; sweaters, trousers, men's coats, women's coats, woven shirts, and underwear. There are consistent differences between the unit value of U.S. production and the Mexico export f.o.b. price of apparel in the U.S. market adjusted for tariffs and transport costs. The adjusted price of Mexican exports is consistently below the price for U.S. production, which suggests that rent-sharing may be taking place. Using modifications of the methods of Erzan, Krishna, and Tan (1991), the author tests alternative explanations for the price difference - differences in composition of Mexican exports and U.S. production, and differences in the quality of Mexican exports and U.S. products. The existence of differences in composition between Mexican exports and U.S. production is rejected for three of the six groups. The author also controls for the existence of significant quality differences. The results indicate that rent- sharing may exist for woven shirts and underwear (two of the three groups in the sample that are consistently quota bound). U.S. importers may receive up to 49 percent of available rents.Economic Theory&Research,Markets and Market Access,Access to Markets,TF054105-DONOR FUNDED OPERATION ADMINISTRATION FEE INCOME AND EXPENSE ACCOUNT,Environmental Economics&Policies

Building On and Honoring Forty Years of PBL Scholarship from Howard Barrows: A Scientometric, Large-Scale Data, and Visualization-based Analysis
Over the past forty years, Howard Barrows’ contributions to PBL research have influenced and guided educational research and practice in a diversity of domains. It is necessary to make visible to all PBL scholars what has been accomplished, what is perceived as significant, and what is the scope of applicability for Barrows’ groundbreaking findings. As more disciplines recognize Barrows’ efforts and adopt PBL in education, it becomes crucial but challenging to sustain community memory so that PBL scholars are kept well informed of research innovations in various domains. In this paper, we review Barrows’ scholarly efforts in PBL and reveal the impacts on subsequent studies in various domains. A bibliometrics analysis is conducted on Barrows’ PBL publications and the corresponding citations to quantitatively measure Barrows’ impact. Our findings demonstrate Barrows’ exceptional contributions to PBL and the disciplinary differences in conducting PBL studies based on Barrows’ work. It is also revealed that PBL scholars who share similar interests have rarely collaborated with each other. The PBL research community has a real opportunity to connect isolated research groups and reduce the fragmentation so that research innovations in one domain can be disseminated to inform other scholars
