Arthur J. Gutman Collection of Menckeniana
No full textArthur J. Gutman, an expert on the life and work of H. L. Mencken , has spent virtually all of his life in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was born in 1911. From 1979 to1999, Gutman served as president of the Mencken Society, an organization founded to encourage the reading of and research into the writings of Henry L. Mencken. The Arthur J. Gutman collection contains books, serials, correspondence, manuscripts, newsletters, pamphlets, photographs, audio-visual materials, and a listing of clippings related to both H. L. Mencken and the Mencken Society. A large portion of the collection consists of first editions of H. L. Mencken's works as well as a number of the most significant secondary works on the writer. The collection contains a considerable amount of correspondence between Gutman and noted Mencken scholars, manuscripts of works on Mencken, and a nearly complete series of Mencken Society newsletters. It also includes a number of rare pieces of Mencken's writing that appeared in pamphlet form as well as original Mencken correspondence. The entire collection spans the period from 1882 to 2006 with the majority of the materials falling between 1979 and 1999

Mosby, the husband of Ruth Greenough, discusses the history of the Greenough Mansion and talks about efforts to move the mansion to the Leisure Highlands Golf Course, in Missoula, Montana’s South Hills community, for restoration and use as a clubhouse and events venue. He recalls some of the Greenough family’s history and explains that they made their wealth in mining claims out of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Mosby explains the layout of the grounds around the mansion’s original location in the Rattlesnake Valley. He also describes the mansion’s interior, paying special attention to the ornate decorations, wallpaper, drapes, use of marble, and the electric and gas light fixtures. Mosby briefly describes his own history, explaining that he moved first to Kalispell, Montana, before relocating to Missoula, Montana, in 1925 when he purchased a retail electric store and began operating the first radio broadcasting station in the city.https://scholarworks.umt.edu/mtcommunities_oralhistory/1032/thumbnail.jp

No full textAn audio recording of an oral history of Arthur J. Prideaux, Pacific University alumnus, about the old Slabtown area of Portland and his recollections of life in the area. During the interview Arthur was ninety-two years old trying to reminisce on memories from his younger years of playing in Slabtown with friends, teaching and various other memories that come to him during the interview. Slabtown was not a distinguished community but had a reputation of gang violence, yet, Arthur did not recall any gangs or fights while growing up in the community; playing baseball with all the boys from the area. Arthur discusses his fond memories of the Lewis and Clark fair where he met his wife, both attended and graduated from Pacific University. After graduating from Pacific Arthur started his career of working in the school system with various jobs ranging from teacher to principal for the next thirty-four years after graduating from Pacific University. Growing up Arthur would play with his close friends from the Scott family, brothers of Harvey Scott who was Pacific’s first graduate. With the many years of living and working in Portland Arthur accumulated many documents and papers that he donated to a historical society to put on display and use as references. The growth of Portland is not a bad or good thing in his eyes, but the loss of many historical landmarks is upsetting to him. At 32:37 the recording cuts out and then continues with a loud squeaking noise for the next thirty seconds
