    Map of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia consists of a group of 12 ancient volcanoes, which are divided into two distinct groups. The northern group comprises three inhabited islands and four uninhabited islands; the southern group 5 islands, two of which are uninhabited. The map shows the routes taken by the explorer James Cook in his Resolution in 1774 in search of the Great Southern Land, the British naval store ship Daedalus as well as the English trading ship Butterworth in 1792, the Captain James Wilson (1760-1814) was master of the missionary ship Duff, despatched by the newly-formed London Missionary Society in 1796 who visited the Marquesas in the 18th century.
