Human resource practices are used as an intervention to investigate the turnover problem because various strategic human resource management (strategic HRM) and IT/ICT employee management studies advocate that companies should invest in employee-friendly and advanced human resource practices that are beneficial for their employees, because employees’ positive responses will benefit the employers eventually, for example, by lowering the companies’ turnover rates. However, by adopting the constructivist paradigm, qualitative research methodology and constructivist grounded theory approach along with interviews with senior managers, Human Resource Managers and ICT employees, this thesis finds that the impact of human resource practices on employees and employers is not as straightforward as what has been claimed in the studies. This thesis discovers three types of human resource practices, i.e. Paternalistic, Formal and Informal, which affect employees and employers in four different ways ranging from mutually benefitting both parties to not benefitting both parties. In addition to the three types of human resource practices, this thesis also discovers four types of employee outcomes and two types of employer outcomes, which when compiled together, provides an in-depth understanding of what is happening in the Malaysian ICT industry in relation to adoption of human resource practices and employee retention outcomes

    Real-time air quality measurements using mobile platforms

    Air pollution poses a serious threat to our health and quality of life. Measuring pollution in the air we breathe and sharing the results with our peers is an important step in increasing social awareness for creating a clean environment. Usually, pollution measurements are conducted using expensive monitors at fixed locations. These measurements fail to provide accurate real-time pollution information in most of the highly polluted roads. It is desirable to have access to real time fine-grained measurements to be able to quickly analyze and identify alarming levels of pollutants. Pervasiveness of smart phones with internet connectivity and increased availability of personal air quality sensors provide a unique opportunity to develop air pollution conscious community of users for collecting and sharing real time air pollution data. In this thesis, we propose air quality monitoring through mobile sensors, which are low-power, low-cost, designed to sample air pollutants such as carbon mono-oxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide, environmental temperature, humidity and air pressure and communicate via Bluetooth with a smartphone. We built an iOS mobile application that makes use of location services available on the mobile phones, to record GPS co-ordinates along with air pollution readings. We built a mobile to cloud replication model, data exchange protocol and outlier detection for anomalous sensor readings. We also employed spatial database queries to optimize location based pollution data sharing and visualization of pollution data overlays on mobile map displays.     A dose–response study of resistance exercise training for brain-derived neurotrophic factor in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Low brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been reported in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Resistance exercise improves levels of BDNF in T2DM; however, it is unknown what amount of exercise intensity will alter its therapeutic effects. The present study aims to investigate the effect of different doses of resistance exercise intensity on BDNF in people with T2DM. Methods and Outcome Assessments: The study will recruit 106 T2DM who will be randomly allocated to one of the four groups to receive resistance exercise training: Group 1 (50% of 1 repetition maximum [RM]), Group 2 (60% of 1 RM), Group 3 (70% of 1 RM), and Group 4 (control group). All the participants will be assessed for the levels of serum BDNF. The data will be checked for normal distribution, and data having non-normal distribution will be log-transformed. Baseline values between the groups will be compared, and the effect of treatment will be determined using one-way analysis of variance. Discussion: Despite the available research demonstrating the effectiveness of resistance exercise training on BDNF in T2DM people, there is no unequivocal exercise prescription for the same. BDNF is susceptible to regulation by exercise. Therefore, it would be interesting to investigate the optimal intensity for bringing about improvement in BDNF and its interaction with chronic exposure to different intensities of resistance exercise

    Discrimination in the Workplace in Canada: An Intersectional Approach

    This study examines discrimination in the workplace in Canada and explores the intersection of marginalized groups. It uses data from the General Social Survey 2016, which collected information from 19,609 non-institutionalized individuals. Results show that 17 percent of the job applicants and 9 percent of the workers felt discriminated against in the workplace during the 12 months before the survey. Data analysis indicates that a person’s identification with two marginalized groups increases the chances of discrimination and augments it further with three marginalized identities. However, the incremental effect of four or more marginalized groups is difficult to examine with this dataset due to the depleting sample size with the inclusion of every new group. Results from the logistic regression illustrate that the intersection of two, three, or four selected disadvantaged groups increases workplace discrimination significantly, thus supporting the theory of intersectionality. However, this perspective does not work for some combinations of marginalized groups.    

    Overall expanded uncertainty estimation in polaron concentration of p-toluene sulfonic acid doped polyaniline by EPR spectroscopy

    Conjugated polymers like polyaniline (PANT) are peculiar in terms that a minor change in doping level leads to only a slight change in polaron concentration but orders of magnitude change in electrical conductivity. Therefore, precise and accurate determination of polaronic concentration is essential to predict the exact doping status which is not a straight forward task. Herein, we report use of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy technique for the quantitative estimation of polaron concentration in p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) doped PANT (PANT-PTSA) samples with evaluation of overall uncertainty in the results calculated as per GUM guidelines. EPR spectra of the samples and reference were recorded under identical temperature and relative humidity conditions and all kind of uncertainty sources i.e. Type A and Type B were identified and quantified. In particular, the random effects viz, sample preparation, instrument stability, reference material, calibration of balance, operator etc. are categorized under above uncertainty sources. DPPH standard used in these measurements has spin concentration 1.52718x10(18) +/- 0.075421624x10(18) spins/g at 95% confidence level
