Abstract This study examined the world view of freedom of thought of the major and minor characters in Saman novel by involving genetic structuralist approach. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The primary data source was Saman, a novel written by Ayu Utami and translated by Pamela Allen in 2005. Meanwhile the secondary data source was the socialhistorical background of the Indonesian society in the twentieth century. Both data were collected through library research and analyzed by descriptive analysis. Based on the genetic structuralist approach, there was a close relationship between the novel and the realities of Indonesian life. The novel was as an object in which the author presented her world view. Keywords: Freedom of Thought, Saman, Genetic Structuralist Approach

No failure no accident in man-made disasters in construction

    No full text
Construction is an industry that carries the risk of causing human death, and the destruction of assets and the environment. Several cases such as girder collapse, crane overturning, formwork collapse, and material landslides have occurred recently in large-scale infrastructure projects in Indonesia. Currently, construction accident theory describes active and latent failures in management, and human as well as technical issues. The purpose of this paper is to propose the theory of no failure no accident in any man-made disaster. A further review of literature studies is used to outline current research findings on management, technical, and human failures leading to catastrophic events. Evidence-based reasoning from 5 cases of catastrophic events in construction is described to reveal failure modes that lead to incidents and accidents. In this paper, firstly the failure modes and their effects are described based on the literature review, and secondly, empirical evidence of failure modes is presented using selected disaster cases recorded by the Construction Safety Committee, Ministry of Public Works, and Public Housing. Finally, this paper concludes that failure modes represent the quality of systems, services, procedures, goods, and personnel that is defective to contribute to a catastrophic event that causes damage to people, the public, property, and the environment

This study is aimed to show freedom of thought which is represented by all major and some minor characters in Saman novel by using genetic structuralism approach. It is done by establishing two objectives: the first is analyzing the novel based on its structural elements and the second is analyzing the novel based on the genetic structuralism approach This research is descriptive qualitative research. In this method, there are two types of data sources, namely primary and secondary data source. The primary data source is Saman novel written by Ayu Utami and translated by Pamela Allen in 2005. Meanwhile the secondary data sources are other materials taken from books, journals, and internet related to the study. Both data are collected through library research and analyzed by descriptive analysis. Based on the analysis, the researcher draws the following conclusions. First, based on the structural analysis of each element, it shows that the character and characterization, setting, plot, point of view, style, and theme are related to each other and form a unity of good novel. Second, based on the genetic structuralism approach, there is a close relationship between the novel and the realities of Indonesian life. The novel is as an object in which the author presents her world view

Correlation between type of ground-based on b-value and the impact on buildings due to Sumatra earthquakes

    No full text
The destructive earthquakes occurred in Sumatra are dominated by medium earthquakes, which generally come from the Sumatra fault and to have a direct impact on the land, buildings and around residential buildings. These earthquakes can be classified into high-frequency earthquakes with low-vibration periods. The hazards caused by the earthquake are mostly from damage and collapse of the residential buildings. This study is a literature review that aimed to observe the characteristics of rocks and ground in Sumatra areas based on b-value that obtained using seismicity estimation is related to the resistance of the earthquake on residential buildings. The b-values obtained from some previous researches so that they could be concluded, and then analyzed the type and condition of the local ground and then evaluated its effect on the surrounding buildings. Based on the outcomes, the estimation of b-value seismic parameters in Sumatra was found 0.34 to 0.5. It means that the type of ground in areas of Sumatra has a hard rock layer. Physically, it has highfrequency earthquake waves; low vibration periods, spreading efficiently on hard layer and having a direct impact on local buildings consequently the risk of collapse building will be higher

&nbsp

    No full text
Construction accidents on infrastructure projects in Indonesia from 2017-2021 have increased by 5.65% from previous years. Construction accidents that result in property damage, death or injury to both workers and the public, pollution and environmental damage cause sustainable development goals not to be achieved. Construction accidents are not only focused on the impacts, but it is necessary to explore how the incident occurred. This is the basis for the need to integrate quality, safety, health and sustainability in construction. The current construction safety management system is not yet integrated with other management systems. This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework in the process of integrating construction quality, safety, health and sustainability management systems. Development of a conceptual framework based on literature review, ISO standards and existing construction safety planning guidelines. The development of this conceptual framework is part of a research proposal that is being formulated to develop a process protocol for integrating process of construction quality, safety, health and sustainability management systems in infrastructure projects. This process protocol can simplify the complexity and overlapping of the processes of each management system so that it is easier to understand and to implement by all project stakeholders
