The Inherent Harm of Employment Discrimination: What Behavioral Economics Teaches Us About Title VII\u27s Adverse Action Requirement

    No full text
For decades, many courts have wrestled with the judicially created concept of adverse employment actions in determining whether a plaintiffhas proved a primafacie case of employment discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of1964. Circuit courts have regularly applied different types of heightened adverse employment action standards, which only muddied the already complicated understanding ofworkplace discrimination. This Comment explores the recent circuit split concerning adverse employment actions and the introduction of the Supreme Court\u27s new some harm testfrom Muldrow v. City of St. Louis. This Comment takes the position that principal behavioral economics theories can inform the judicial system\u27s understanding ofwhat it means to suffer harm in the context ofemployment discrimination and proposes a new standardfor adverse employment actions that incorporates those theories

Sensitivity to fine-grained and coarse visual information: The effect of blurring on anticipation skill

    No full text
Copyright @ 2009 Edizione l PozziWe examined skilled tennis players’ ability to perceive fine and coarse information by assessing their ability to predict serve direction under three levels of visual blur. A temporal occlusion design was used in which skilled players viewed serves struck by two players that were occluded at one of four points relative to ball-racquet impact (-320ms, -160ms, 0ms, +160ms) and shown with one of three levels of blur (no blur, 20% blur, 40% blur). Using a within-task criterion to establish good and poor anticipators, the results revealed a significant interaction between anticipation skill and level of blur. Anticipation skill was significantly disrupted in the ‘20% blur’ condition; however, judgment accuracy of both groups then improved in the ‘40% blur’ condition while confidence in judgments declined. We conclude that there is evidence for processing of coarse configural information but that anticipation skill in this task was primarily driven by perception of fine-grained information. This research was supported by a University of Hong Kong Seed Funding for Basic Research grant awarded to the second author

Effects of musically-induced emotions on choice reaction time performance

    No full text
The main objective of the current study was to examine the impact of musically-induced emotions on athletes’ subsequent choice reaction time (CRT) performance. A random sample of 54 tennis players listened to researcher-selected music whose tempo and intensity were modified to yield six different music excerpts (three tempi x two intensities) before completing a CRT task. Affective responses, heart rate (HR), and RTs for each condition were contrasted with white noise and silence conditions. As predicted, faster music tempi elicited more pleasant and aroused emotional states; and higher music intensity yielded both higher arousal (p < .001) and faster subsequent CRT performance (p < .001). White noise was judged significantly less pleasant than all experimental conditions (p < .001); and silence was significantly less arousing than all but one experimental condition (p < .001). The implications for athletes’ use of music as part of a preevent routine when preparing for reactive tasks are discussed

HOW THE HEALER BECOMES: EXPERIENCED FEMALE PSYCHOTHERAPISTS’ DEVELOPMENT OF VOICE

Research indicates that therapists’ congruent presence impacts therapeutic alliance and outcomes, yet there remains a need for relational feminist understandings of therapist development of congruence. This study, grounded in a constructivist paradigm, seeks to further our understanding of this phenomenon utilizing the listening guide. Nine female psychotherapists participated in this study to answer the following research question, How do experienced female therapists experience their development of voice? Participants spoke in voices of connection, resistance, and disconnection. Three additional voices were identified regarding participants’ views of their professional role. Five participants joined in a follow-up focus group. Being embodied served as a primary means through which all five participants connected to their voice as therapists. Voices of disconnection facilitated growth when participants connected with themselves relationally. Relationships that facilitate therapist development should be characterized by a relational openness to all voices within the developing therapist, which was associated with supervisors’ embodied presence.selfcongruencepsychotherapist developmentwomenpresenceembodimentrelational theor

A journey with self-compassion : exploring self-compassion within the context of the Christian faith

    No full text
Despite the spiritual roots of self-compassion, the impact of spirituality on the development of self-compassion has not been widely explored. The listening guide method and autoethnography were combined to explore the lived experience of self-compassion from a Christian faith perspective. The participant co-researchers’ narratives revealed three categories of voices. The voices of shame and criticism included oppression, internalized oppression, and judgment. These voices appeared as the participants discussed what makes self-compassion difficult. The voices of love and acceptance included connection, unity, openness, and warmth. Together, these voices were used as participants discussed their experiences of self-compassion. Finally, the voices of resistance included the voices of struggle and advocacy. These voices appeared to facilitate the development of self-compassion. This study offers a deeper understanding of the natural development of self-compassion and of how the Christian faith may facilitate or hinder self-compassion. Implications for counsellors, pastors, and future research are discussed

Critical factors influencing paternal involvement : fathers’ experiences of negotiating role responsibilities

    No full text
This qualitative study uses the Enhanced Critical Incident Technique (ECIT) to explore incidents fathers report to be helpful or hindering to their parental engagement. Eight fathers were interviewed with 206 reported incidents. From the 206 incidents, 132 were identified as helpful (HE); 47 as hindering (HI); and 27 as wish list (WL) items. All incidents were assigned to one of the following categories (a) positive and negative role models, (b) Mother-Father Relationship (d) Father's Religion/Spirituality (e) Responsibility (f) Attachment (g) Personal Decision (h) Characteristics of Children (I) Reflective Parenting (j) Societal Influence (k) Father's Characteristics, and (l) Extended Family Influence. Fathers also provided 29 recommendations for effective paternal engagement. Research findings indicate major themes of responsibility, engagement, and father-mother dyad as important factors determining paternal involvement. Additionally, participants frequently referred to a confluence of factors impacting their involvement, which they navigate within a myriad of social roles

Single and childless women over the age of 35 constitute an expanding demographic in North America and in many parts of the world, yet we are still living in a society that places great importance on marriage and family and views them as important markers of life success. This research was designed to explore how involuntarily single (never-married) and childless women experience themselves during early midlife (ages 35-45). Eight women’s experiences were explored in this study using the feminist relational methodology of the Listening Guide. Data analysis uncovered three categories of voices: voices which conveyed the positivity of living a single and childless identity (i.e. the voices of hope, faith, gratitude, nurturance, freedom, and resilience), voices which conveyed the struggles of living a single and childless identity (i.e. the voices of invisibility, shame, confusion, loneliness, guilt, longing, and uncertain waiting), and the voice of ambivalence.singlechildlesswomenListening Guid
